Thanks Sue! I have a big furniture painting job to get done this week and today I got called into work unexpectedly so it might be a slow week on caravan progress, sadly. Sometimes a little break doesn't hurt though, it refreshes my brain haha

Hello...I'm still here and progress on my van is going very well but I can't get into Photobucket tonight to upload any pics! I've finished the woodwork part of my dinette seating and I've spent today rebuilding a cabinet over the wheel arch on the door side. I'm very pleased with my efforts and feel ready to tackle the rebuild of the kitchen cabinetry tomorrow I am truly loving this whole process, I am astounding myself at what I am able to do. Don't mean to sound like a show off but I hope that this makes senses some of you who have been in the same situation, and inspires others to try the same. I had no idea what I was in for when I bought this van but I'm taking it all in my stride and finding it nowhere near as daunting as it first appeared

Ok I've managed to upload my photos now to show where I am at. I'm not likely to win any joinery competitions but I am very pleased with my efforts and know I am going to get the exact van that I want...very exciting!

restyledvintage - Looks good to me, If you use Flexible No more gaps to remove shadow lines where the Quads meet the panelling, just place into joint and wipe excess off with damp cloth, Just remember no more gaps is difficult to sand as it balls when sanded.

Hi Rattles, thanks for that, I love no more gaps, it makes my handiwork look almost professional I didn't have any on hand yesterday so it's on my shopping list for next time I hit Bunnings. For the nail gun holes etc I used the Selleys filler that comes in a little blue tub, the name escapes me right now but I love it, it is easy to apply, dries really quickly and is super easy to sand. I wish they made that in a caulk gun tube! Speaking of where the quads, I want to put this trim (I call it quarter rounds, same difference I guess) all around the floor edges after I put down the lino tiles but I don't know how to cut it so the shape fits over the piece it butts up to. It's called a coping joint I think. I'm going to look on youtube but if anyone has any tips for me, they would be greatly appreciated. I have a sliding compound mitre saw that I can cut the angles and bevels on and I also have a coping saw for cutting the curves. cheers Karen

Just use the Compound saw to cut mitres and again fill in with No more gaps, Another way instead of Quads use Floating floor Scotia as it has double sided tape attached or use if painting ordinary Scotia and Nail/Screw as this will cover more errors.

G'day Karen, Bloody heck - go ahead!! I think you are doing a GREAT job, and you deserve 3 cheers for getting in and having a go! I've had a go at making those coping joints (see Google images ) in the past, but only on quad timber. I found my brain got fuddled trying to work out which surface of the timber to cut so it matched the other bit. Wasted a few bits of timber trying to get it right. If you get the hang of it, you can certainly make a nice, neat joint though. It just gets frustrating when you carefully cut the timber, only to find out you've cut the wrong side (#&*%$#@!!!!!!). Great effort on the van so far! cheers, Al.

Hi everyone, just a quick hello to say I'm still here Haven't had much chance to work on my caravan the past few weeks and it's driving me crazy! However I'm about to head down to my garage soon and work on the new kitchen cabinets. I got my pressed tin splash back up last week and I absolutely love it. Will have some photos later today

That's the same oven and fridge - the oven needed a massive clean which took me ages, and the fridge I stripped back all the awful brown paint and put a new panel in the front. I've just finished the dressing table/bedside table for the back corner of the van. Last bit of major building to do inside is the bed which I'm leaving till last so I have plenty of room to work in there.

I plan on repainting the outside of the van (the old guy I bought it off repainted it for me but didn't do a very good job). There are leaks that I haven't addressed yet - around the corner windows which I've removed and need to remake, and I think probably on the j mold between the roof and the walls, and around the roof hatch. I haven't been up on the roof to have a look yet...I'm a bit nervous that I've done all this work inside and effectively it is still the same leaky caravan!
I had intended, since I had to remove the windows, to repaint while I had the windows out but now I'm reconsidering this idea and looking for feedback and advice please. I know I need to address the sealing/leaking issues asap BUT I'm thinking the repaint isn't desperate and time, work and budget wise I'm quite liking the idea of having a useable van sooner rather than later with summer approaching.
All the way through I have been a bit worried about successfully sealing up the window holes while doing a respray - I don't want any spray getting inside ruining my hard work in there...I know I probably should have redone the outside first...but I didn't!
So what am I asking? Firstly, am I nuts for not repainting it with the windows out? Secondly, I'm very worried about putting the windows back in so they are properly sealed, would someone walk me through this please?
thanks...

It would have been easier with the windows out, but I am in the same boat. Because mine is outside I could not leave the windows out for long. I am planning on masking up the windows when respraying so it should not be a worry.
I found taking the windows out fairly straight forward, however I don't have the wrap around windows and they can be a bit tricker. Carefully drill out the rivets, clean the frames up and replace glass of needed. Then apply liberal amounts of sikafexl or another seatlent around the frame and replace and clamp then re rivet.
Make sure of course if you replace the glass its fits well before you re apply sealent.

Ok...another update. When I had a good look at the poor quality paint job I decided I was never going to be happy with it after all the trouble I've gone to inside the van, and as it has scratched quite easily in places, I realised that the old guy never used a primer and it hasn't adhered very well in places. This meant I couldn't just sand back and repaint, I needed to strip it all off, so that's what I've started. Big job but I know I will be happy I did it in the end. I'm also taking the opportunity to change the colour - it's currently mint green and pink, which I chose, but I'm not going to all the work to repaint in the colours that make me think of the cruddy job he did! I've also learnt that caravans look better with some white on them, so the bottom half will be turquoise and the top half white. My caravan is currently outside so I can work properly around each side, and is covered in tarps. We've had some decent rains this past week, which have stressed me out. I've decided to get the windows back in as soon as I can, so I will strip the van, prime and paint a strip around each window, put the windows in, then repaint the whole van. I will be doing it with a brush and roller and I've painted a lot (although never a caravan!) so I'm confident I get a neat job around the windows.

Hi Karen, Love seeing your updates. I just came on here to try and suss out another Viscount to see if similar ages all have the clearance light up high, as so many we see have them down low which is current legislation and I was worried about ours being different as it was a QLD registered van, but yours has clearance lights in the same spot as ours so I think we'll just leave them where they are. I'm envious of your shed, we're trying to do ours out in Matt's grandmother's backyard which makes for difficult times with the weather etc We just started cutting some of our lining today, we ended up going with a product called nema board which is a polycarbonate that we won't have to paint as it's white, and we've done all our cupboards white. It's going to be a difficult journey without an efficient place to cut, we're balancing on milk crates and a pallet with a circular saw haha. We're actually just up the road from you in Kempsey, but were from Wauchope until we set off to travel Australia. We've spent so much time at Bunnings, although have found Mitre 10 to be even better and ended up ordering our new insulation and lining through them as they gave us lots of advice and ideas. Love your splashback,it's looking great! Loreena

I guess when members finish their vans its easy to drift off, away from the forum, pity, it would be nice to see the finished product on the road.

Im not sure Karen is finished yet...I still see the odd post on facebook...stay tuned I'm sure she will be back with an update.
It is interesting though how this forum tends to be renos only versus the caravanners forum which is more about traveling and tweaks/improvements. I guess is just the nature of old versus new

From what i have seen & noted most travel posts are not really liked or commented on so folks do not bother & go elsewhere i guess, shame! Will not stop me from doing what i do & enjoying any post be it reno, tips or adventure. Variety is after all the spice of life. More importantly any forum, about any subject on the interwebs, content is only about what the current crop of posters make it at that time!

Hello, yes I am still here and still haven't finished my van lol! I tend to post in the group on Facebook rather than here as the photo uploading system of this site does my head in, Facebook is much easier. My progress has been slow, especially over the summer when it was too hot to bother. I'm now on a deadline to have it fi I shed by the end of July when my rego will be three months overdue, and I am determined to have it done by then. Currently I'm painting the exterior and about to,lay the floor vinyl, which I will build the bed frame on top of. Today I've pulled my four seasons hatch to bits and I'm cleaning it up ready to reassemble, reseal, and install on my freshly painted roof

Hi If your rego is overdue and the van is towable then why leave it. You will have to get it Blue slipped. As long as everything on the outside is working then it will pass inspection. That's what I've been doing. I just block out the windows so no-one can look in. Ted
