G'day Atog, Congratulations on getting the Olympic licensed and on the road, Did you let the Inspector inside the van ? (watch your big feet "mate" he said) What color do you intend painting it.....two tone or one color ? I bet the locals around your way have had their dirty paws all over it by now ;D I hope you have a hitch lock fitted, we would hate to hear that some-one else liked it as much as you do, not long now to show off all your hard work to the world, it's a great feeling to tow a Classic around and have people comment on it, one gets the feeling that he is a tape recording after a while, The Wild flowers will be out in a couple of months, so get it painted and I'll stick the kettle on, ! ! ! ;D ;D ;D kiwijim ;D

Wow what a response !!!!!!!!!!!!! Keelz and Mike Thanks for all the encouragement guys The project is entering the final stages Still plenty to do but will hold off on anything that costs $ until it's painted Yes I am beginning to puff out the ol chest a bit more each morning I see the Olympic in my front yard BobtThe first trip will be over the Easter break To a shed in the Portsmith industrial area.. To strip any old paint off bog up any holes and then To give the ol' dear a brand new coat..... of paint ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D The first real trip/holiday will be a shake down trip somewhere close with each trip following a little further away..... Possibly the local dam on the Tablelands or Undara lava tubes Hey KiwijimThe inspector was not impressed with the van His comment with disdain in his tone was Where did you get thaaat !!!!!! Almost like he had seen me step in something smelly While unhitching the van a bloke that does panelbeating who works behind the inspector came over and drooled all over the van In the space of five minutes I had two comments..... one of each The registration lady was very nice and made neutral commments.... A bit of everything really They all liked the insides but the outside..... Hence the need to paint her up One of the previous owners has had her in an accident and the wheel arches have been damaged and bogged up When the preparation for the paint is done that will be fixed A mate from Yungaburra on the Atherton Tablelands has panelbeating experience as does the guy that is painting it So will have two able tradies at it hopefully Just got to get the go ahead from the friend and his missus who owns the shed I need to work out of It's all coming together so far Thanks again guys Cheers Atog

Hey Wahroonga Mate never got it weighed.... relied on the tare weight of the original .....850kg Bit of a cheat I know but time was against me The paint will be two pack As for the colour....... There was some debate about that.... Here's how it went I want something different ... maybe wide stripe ..... Wife : How about layers of colour from red fading to orange yellow and cream..... call it Tequila Sunrise ?? Fantastic idea Let's do it Some months laterNot so sure about the colour scheme...... For such a nice interior and possible resale in years to come..... How about just a cream colour with small highlights of colour... pinstripes?? So there it is Haven't fully made up my mind yet What do you blokes think??Atog The undecided

Hey Atog, I would suggest........keep it White (full gloss that is) and maybe add some Gold Pin striping, it would retain it's original appearance. ;D kiwijim

Atog... White is great but to me it always seems to yellow a bit. Cream is the way to go with a pin strip... Sounds real nice.

Hi atog, I've been squinting at what you've been up to lately. You need to get your blood pressure checked ...the rush of blood you've had lately in getting the good ship on the road could lead to some health problems. Good grief, man!...as soon as the cyclone passes over you're out there getting the Olympic all plated up! Ain't nothing stands in your way, ay?? Congratulations on achieving that milestone. It's gotta be a good feeling after all the hard work you've put into the van so far. I reckon a trip up to Cape York would be a good road test... cheers, Al.

Hey Guys The big push to get things done was because there was three weeks of holidays...... unplanned I was told to take holidays as the workshop was very quite and they thought it was a good idea for those with any time up to take it... I was one of many So it was sprung on me on a Friday that as of the following Monday I was on holidays That and the fact that I needed to have the van registered to take it to the shed for painting Which by the way is now a goer ;D ;D ;D ;D Told you my previous boss and his missus are top people Haven't worked for them for over a year and they still are happy for me to use their workshop over the Easter break Becoming more like friends than previous employers Currently the van is sitting quitely by the house being ignored Have a few jobs to do for customers of my previous vocation before doing any more work on ....... What am I going to call this van? "The Olympic" will still have plumbing and painting and trim fitted and curtains fitted and...... you get the idea ...... before being used Still a way to go yet Cheers Atog

Hey Everyone Still thinking of a name for the van Might just be lazy and call it A.T.O.G Been slack this weekend ..... decided to clean up the workshop instead of working on the van yesterday Today only a couple of hours painting the lounge and beds partially inside and partially out ..... Now up to one top coat on all surfaces Do have one issue with painting on beautiful sunny days These little beggars Bush bees seem to love the smell of turps and paint....... With about six hives around my place they come from everywhere to use freshly painted surfaces as a landing strip Oh well just glad they are around the place.... Sign of the health of the area Cheers Atog

Atog, What do you intend to paint the Olympic with? I am thinking of using Norglass 2 pak, I will probably have to brush it on as there is too much to shift in the shed if I have to spray it.
Got the fridge in the 21footer over the weekend.....through the hatch. Gunna start putting some pictures on very soon, LIKE tonight sometime.
Regards..........Humps.

Hey Humps Your timing for that question is excellent Bought this home today I'll let the photos do the talking If you look real hard the colour is.... caravan cream ;D ;D ;D ;D Gave them a bit off the Olympic's interior to match up It's two pack commercial vehicle paint Better than normal two pack but not the top of the range Sold to me as a mid range Dunno how you'll go with a brush..... Try to spray paint if it is at all possible The one thing that I took away from the the paint shop that was most important Any stress fractures in the gelcoat needs to be removed and flowcoat or bog applied over the area you ground out As part of the preparation I'll be using flowcoat Will start preparing the outside this week Cheers Atog

Hey Bobt,
I agree that Olympic of Atog's is right Beautiful, ;D ;D ;D
I could almost picture a Dentist's chair where he has fitted the table,
Thats another piece of craftsmanship that you won't find in any production model caravan.
I doubt very much that Atog will part with this van when it's finished, I think it's part of the family now, actually I was surprised it did get moved the other week ( for licensing ) I bet he had a heck of a job pulling it loose from the house.
Just in cast you read this Atog........ Yes I am very impressed with the way the Olympic is taking shape and your work on those cabinets looks really great,
There is something about clear polished wood, far better than painted stuff where the paint can hide any old rubbish.
It's a pity this country is so large, it would be great if all C.C'ers could meet up once a year and show off their Pride and Joys,
and I don't mean our Brides. ;D ;D ;D
I know why Atogs van is taking so long to complete....... Stop sitting back and admiring it Atog, get it finished then get out there and show it to the World.
Cheers and Beers.

Kiwijim, great suggestion re catching up with everybody here once a year. Probably a "logistic nightmare" but worth considering. Mick.

Thanks for the comments Guys Yes Jim I occasionally have breakfast in the Olympic and try and think of the scenery that will be viewed through the windows in coming times The table leg is quite light and much better than anything I could have put together With the added bonus of a small hole through the floor The table top looks much better in reality..... The wifes favourite bit of the van so far I'm told Off the subject for the momentA get together would be great - but as said it would be a logistical nightmare Perhaps somewhere mid New South Wales if it happens Which for me means up to 3000 k's of travel one way A small sum compared to the distances Kiwijim and Oldfarts would have from WA The other way to go is those closer have a get together when Jim is doing his trip around Aus That way he gets to meet most of the Classic vanners at various times.... Sadly not all at once but at least many will get to admire each others work Worth a thought As for selling the Olympic........ It was done as a project and got out of hand Have spent way too much on it and unless someone is willing to part with some serious cash it will stay with me for some time Some members may know my ultimate van is a 21 foot Olympic with full fibreglass underneath towed by a Chrysler panelvan I am currently staring down the possibility of becoming a member of the great unwashed So that looks to be a long way off Will continue on with this one and see what the future brings As my old man use to say Wouldn't be dead for quids ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Cheers Atog

aaaaaaaaahh atog. That illustrious panel van will eventually make its way to you. I staggered out of the caravan bright and early one morning, looked out over the bay and saw this. So while you are still in the planning and developing stage print this out and hang it on your window it will help you your realize of course, if you had a 21 footer caravan parks would say "sorry it will not fit in 'ere" ;D ;D ;D ;D woopee I have timber woopee ;D ;D
