That's horrible. Bunnings is worse than a $2 shop. The cheapest and the gaudiest. So I'll retract the Bunnings and say at any good plumbing/irrigation shop. That's a real one.

Yesterday or the day before after the discussion on Millard 1399's thread - decided to check the lights are working on the van New lights new wiring.... plug.... 18 months old no worries Orr so I thought..... Hook up the work van and ..... clearance lights fantastic..... nice orange to the front and red at the back of each light....CHECK Brake lights ...... Yep nice and bright ...... gotta love those LEDS ..... CHECK Left indicator...... ........ left indicator...... ...... Ohhhh shhhhhht Right indicator...... ....... RIGHT @#$%ÎNG INDICATOR.... ARHHHHHH Ok lets work this out Check wiring is as per diagram.... yep ...... Lead soldered all wires..... yep solid connection on the plug..... yep Arrrrrhhhh yessssss the work van had this exact same problem once before when towing another trailer at work...... It's the work van ...... simple Let's just check this ....... take the wifes car and hook it up to the caravan...... Expectantly Left indicator...... aaaaaaaahhhhhh not again..... nuthin Orr right Get the test light out .....busted bulb.. Throw it all in a heap and go upstairs Monday Buy a new test light and male 7 pin plug..... I'll fix this little #@@%&^#$@# Monday afternoon test plug on work van.... nuthin..... check new test light..... nuthin ...... AAAARRRRRRHHHHHH Down to a mates place for a couple of beers and a whinge Cool down Hey Atog (real name concieled to protect the stupid) take my test light and see if that works Back to the caravan Test the test light... It works Test female fitting on the car indicators.... nuthin..... OK this is dragging on waaaaayyyyy too far Check the other pins blink, blink, blink, Wot the ..... Long Long story shortened The instructions on the male plug end said place indicator wires on one and four...... Car is hooked up to what would be spare pins using the instructions that came with the plug end No wonder there wasn't a connection.... Swap the wires over Left indicator on car working Yes Down the back of the van ....... right indicator working Pull the plug apart for the umpteenth time and swap the wires over NOW IT WORKS PERFECTLY Sometimes I hate 12 volt electrics.... this is one of them Seems it depends on where the male plug is made as to which pin the indicators are hooked up too A trap for the unwary..... read here.... a trap for ATOG All good now ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Cheers Atog the relieved

Atog, got a new tester in the mail to you called a "12v patience tester" Good to hear you got it all sorted out Some of the new replacement 12 or 7 pin plugs i've seen around now actually print the description for each pin in letters inside the case - handy for when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere without a wiring diagram cheers Keelz

Hey Guys Not a lot to report at the moment Had a numberplate holder made up in Stainless steel as I couldn't find one that was any good Total cost....$30 The cheap plastic crap was $29 in the stores So no complaints here Fitted that and the numberplate lights tonight Hooked it all up ...... Worked like a charm ;D ;D ;D ;D Totally different to yesterdays fiasco Returned the faulty test light today and nicely explained where they should store it.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Now I know the plate looks crooked but it is just the reflection of the flash .... trust me I measured it ;D ;D ;D Cheers Atog

Hey Atog... looks to me like you are almost ready to head south for the winter... dont' you love trailer lights when they are playing up??? I love it even more when people borrow my car trailer and tell me later the lights didn't work properly. Then I discover they are using a 5 pin plug trying to connect to my 7 pin set up... I made up a lead with a 7 pin female plug one end and bare wire the other end. I connect the bare ones to a battery to test the lights on my follow along stuff... beats trying to get it close to a car when all I want to do is check it in preparation for the next trip out.. yep if I hold my head a little to the left right the number plate bracket looks fine bad luck about the window frames bobt

Hey Guys Have been looking to buy a door latch for the outside of the Olympic...... 280mm long Weeeeelllllll no chance of finding one of those Local hardware sold be a stainless steel latch and fittings The fellow there said why not make it yourself? I liked his way of thinking Soooooo Bought a catch section that bolts to the van at a marine supplier and a 350mm piece of stainless rod Here's the result of a bit of thinking, a bit of heat, a bit of bending and then a bit of polishing Not bad for less than $10 in materials With about 3/4 of an hour to make up and polish Left some scratches in it for all to say .... not bad but Look at all those marks ;D ;D ;D ;D Tyres this weekend and hopefully registered next week Cheers Atog

Hey Atog, Not bad ...but look at all those scratches, there are......said it, Happy now, ;D ;D ;D just wondering, in one picture you have an eye in a ring, the second picture you have a eye in a hook. which side of the door does the hook go on me thinks eye in hook will fall off kiwijim

What marks? ;D Blind freddy would be glad to see 'em! Not bad I say for a bit of home workshop stainless bending and polishing ATOG, you should be proud of your fabrication efforts. Keep up the good work and may the Classic Vanners force be with you as you approach rego inspection. Be weary of the "dark side" - the evil inspectors who will measure your tyre tread depth and check your coupling and ask you to flash 'em..... with your trailer lights that is Cheers Keelz

Hey Guys If the latch doesn't..... latch then I'll bend it a bit more ;D ;D ;D It goes here When not in use it will hook back onto the door and when the door is open it will hold it open against the van Least that's the theory Cheers Atog

HEY Atog, Good on Ya mate, the Olympic is looking great, not long before we see it on the WILD FLOWER TOUR now "AH" What size tires did you fit ? ? kiwijim

Post by atouchofglass on Mar 7, 2009 20:25:44 GMT 10
Hey Kiwijim From memory the tyres are light truck tyres 8 ply Dunlops 185 x 14inch
Replaced the old tyres which were 6ply light truck canvas The bloke at the tyre joint thinks they may be ten or more years old
Under inflated so they edges were worn out
According to the previous owner the van was stored in a shed for at least five years in South Australia How long he had it I don't know but add the year plus for me and it seems possible they were a decade old
Total cost of new tyres including fitting, balancing and getting rid of the old ones $260
As for the wild flowers ....... It is on my to do list Will get over to the West eventually Got a bit of exploring here to do first
Cheers Atog

Hey Atog Absolutely excellent.......... All ready to roll.. 8ply.. good move. I found that 8yr old tyres are not something you can rely on.. So when does it go in for the rego? What did ya do with the spare?

Hey Wayne
Start with a fine grade of sandpaper I used a foam/sponge sandpaper IE there is a fine grit sandpaper on a foam block It's waterproof and lasts for ages
Followed by Jiff or similar creme cleanser on a green scourer pad Actually used steel wool..... problem is it leaves bits of steel on the van that rust later and are a pain to remove later
Followed by a rag and autosol polish
Big tin of elbow grease is needed
Just to do my small amount of aluminium around the Olympic took most of the day
Have a look at page three on this thread
Your Quest....... mate get some friends and a few cartons .... should be a quick job then ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
All the best with the clean up
Atog

Hey Atog, Where can I get one of those........the vacant hole where my van used to be? I think mine will be a long time yet! .....but luckily I have other options to travel in. I have enjoyed the resto and have got some ideas, did a bit of fibreglassing and hatch repairs today.........I don't post much but I'm still at it. ........ one day!!!!!!! You won't get rust marks if you take the windows out before you polish them. Regards Humpty.

Hi Atog, I bet that first move of the van must have felt terrific. And the next proud moment; when it's sitting on the lawn out the front looking great. Worth a beer! (or two!) Take a credit, you did that. The time, effort and final result will be remembered long after any cost is counted. Enjoy. Cheers, techron

Hey Guys Humpty's right If you remove the windows it is easier and you get to reseal them properly before doing your interior Techron the first move was down,,,,,, about six inches off the stands ;D ;D ;D ;D But the victory lap around the block .....arrrrrr now that was sweet ;D ;D ;D Didn't do a lot of anything on it this weekend really Just sat on the verandah and looked at it.... problem is ..... The side facing the road is the off side to me and it needs some work.... More on that in coming posts She is road worthy >>>>> I hope But this morning will tell Wish me all the best Be back online tonight Cheers Atog
