Hi whereswaldo I rebuilt a kampa unfortunately mine was no where near as good as yours. If you want to get the roof working with just one winch it is fiddly but once set very easy to use. your original winch should have had a chain link welded in center of spool thread wire though this then under van though floor and attach to beds. then you need three people two people on each end of a pipe (a bit of 4x2 timber will do if you haven't got a pipe just doesn't let cable move as freely)put pipe under cable and lift putting as much strain on cable as comfortable third person winds up winch keeping each cable on opposite sides of the chain link. As you use it more and more a long way down the track you will know when as the rear bed will start to catch you may have to rewind the winch again this is only because the longer rear cable will stretch more than the short front cable but the better the quality of the cable the less chance it ever has to be done again under normal circumstances. they are a good camper sleeps seven in standard set up and took less than five min to have top up ready to use.
have fun

cheers for the advice i dont remember seeing any chain so maybe that was part of the problem previous owners started to reno it changed pulley and hand brake cables but i think thats all they did they never got to use it apart from testing it out when they brought it a yr b4 in there drive way wish i had found this site b4 we started working on it but we have already set it up with 2 winders so it will stay like that for now just means if im by myself i have to run back n fourth winding each end a bit at a time but i usually have somebody travelling with me as i have a few health problems i was thinking about putting my 300w kickass solar panels on the fiberglass roof but not sure if its a good idea or not the specs say they weigh 23.5kg

the top of the roof is is solid in design just make sure all holes are sealed. Twenty to thirty kilos won't hurt it. There is no insulation but if it still has the original lino tiles there is a chance they may contain asbestos. have fun hope all goes well with your build. your body looks to be in good condition so doesn't look like it will take too much but before you paint the outside it would be a good idea to take corner trims off and reseal to keep water out and have a look at the condition of the cup head bolts that run along bottom if they are fairly rusted may be an idea to change them one at a time don't take all out at once as this may warp and break sides . Just call it a 44year service.

By the pictures it doesn't look like it will take a lot of money to tidy up. what we did for an annex if you don't have one was put a sail track on roof edge then attached a polly tarp to the sail track and a cheap 3mx3m gazebo polly tarp over gazebo and peg to ground to stop it blowing away and gives you one side. ours was one of those retractable gazebos very quick to set up. Fly ends for the beds is a good idea like a tent the tarp can sweat. Easy and cheap to make your self.

That's a good idea also keeps the bugs out and gives you that extra space. It sleeps seven but can get a bit cramped with 3 or 4 people during awake time.

I know its supposed to sleep seven but as you say would be cramped even at night as they say the end beds are doubles but they only take a king single mattress and i have to shorten the king single by 15cm got 2 memory foam king singles of ebay for 90 each after 10% off

bit annoyed at moment went halfs in this van with my dad hes mate in yarrawonga is doing work on it and im not happy they couldnt figure out how the canvas went on even after me telling them several times they have gone and put sliders on so the top of the tarp just slides in but they have done it on the outside the dickheads which means 1 it will most likely leak in my opinion? and 2 it means the canvas has to be put on and taken off every time we set up the whole idea of getting this was so we could just pull up wind up and use now its no easier than the camper trailer and the camper trailer had bigger beds might as well just use that its only 8 pegs and 2 ropes to peg in and your set up

That is a sad outcome. During my caravan park stays i have been impressed by some camper trailer fast set ups then amazed at all afternoon set up jobs, for similar space.

i have told them it has to be fixed they have a canvas repairer involved as hes putting on new fly screens and fixing a small tear so he should have known it goes inside at the top but maybe he hasnt seen what they done not sure but also dad was a roof tiler so he should no top lip over lower to prevent leaks very annoying fingers crossed they get it right otherwise its wasted money as i will need to get it fixed properly

There are some good threads here & in the fix or repair it fb group, maybe hunt around & show your dad some pics of what it was and improvements for drainage etc, that some have made?

The Original tarp had a plastic strip sewn in. the tarp goes to the inside between a thin board and the outside lower edge of roof. then stainless screws go from the outside through plastic strip in tarp and into thin board strip. what they used originally for the board was thin 2inch timber skirting don't use mdf I had ply off cuts so I cut that into strips to replace the original strips as they had rotted in the corners. I hope this helps. ps try and have canvas a bit loose on corners we didn't at first and when we lowered the roof the corners stretched and tore after the wife added extra to the corners to make them a little loose not a problem .

hi all sorry havent been on for awhile life got in the way lol well got the van back looks great will get and post pics later the only thing is they have left the canvas around the outside of the roof it slides on using sail rails seems easy enough to put on and off when setting up and packing up (thinking canvas will last longer this way?) only thing is i reckon it will leak as there is no rail around the corners so i was thinking of putting a rubber flap all the way around? something like this www.clarkrubber.com.au/strip-neoprene-3mm-x-75mm put a sealer glue underneath half off it and screw it into fiberglass where the backing board is what do you guys think or got any other ideas would love to hear them

oh and the fridge still works on 240 and 24v but hammers the battery havent tried on gas yet need to learn more about these fridges first as ive never owned a 3way fridge need to learn how to use it etc and hot water service works but needed a new pump cant turn two of the dials on the stove top the grill knob turns and gas comes on there so im guessing knobs are just stuck we have a weber anyways so probs wont use the inside stove still deciding as we can turn it into a lil more bench space
