I was going to use a little 3" air orbital polisher with paste for doing aluminium It's what I use on my semi when I get really excited. You don't find that the steel wool leaves surface contamination prone to rusting? I've always been cautious when using metal abrasives, or sharing abrasives between different metals. Washing down the surface with kero and after doing the final polish with toothpaste will remove any steel wool contamination. We never used orbital polisher but having said that in USA the professionals using them for mirror finish in the Airstream vans. If the use of a chemical polish is desired the IMO Nuvite is among the best products in the market.

In our window case, we had no option as every inch was badly soiled & stained. I tried synthetic & steel wheels but they pitted the surface, also a number of aluminium revitalizers without sucess, it came back to ELBOW grease. For polishing a panel, I expect its reasonably good condition after being painted, why not try a small area with the orbital? keeping in mind a flat surface is more difficult than a round truck bull bar.

I'm 125kg and have put most - not all of my weight on the roof of my Arrow - didn't put a mark in it. Don't think I'd trust it to take my whole weight, but a lot sturdier than I thought. Foam sandwich 'vans are pretty strong by design. I wouldn't want to get on the roof of a wooden framed 'van ! www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBrXICtUq0gseeya, Shane L. That you tube is amazing!!!

That you tube is amazing!!! Yes, I really like their vans. What about the OH&S issues they have... Where was the fall restraint.... if you did that where I used to work you'd get a written warning. Just one of the reasons I left...

So it turns out newborns suck up a lot of spare time! Anyway change of plans after I was cautioned for having my bullbar too shiny and being a hazard, she's getting a coat of paint. Yesterday I pulled most of the corner trims and all the windows as well as all the fittings for the old annex This week will be spent cleaning up the old mastic and bogging a few things up ready for paint next weekend. Got these for $8 Should look old enough

Been off bargain shopping again! One of my other suppliers has the "standard" side marker lights out on clearance for $3.30 each. Wasn't worth trying to clean the old ones up and re-use them! As of this morning I have all the aluminium trims cleaned on the back, and about 95% of the old mastic removed from the corners of the van I also have all the windows and the 4 season hatch out of the van with all the sealant removed from both sides. All the rotten framing in the back end was done weeks ago, have now reparied the rotten frame around the door (door hinges were hanging off the metal trim, no timber left behind!) Todays to-do list... 1) Get the last of the mastic off 2) Sand the old paint and the areas of bare aluminium to key in the primer 3) Fix a few holes where the TV antenna, phone socket, annex sailtrack holes etc 4) Clean the whole van - can't exactly use a hose with all the water proofing removed so planning to blow all the dust off with compressed air (love having a big workshop to use with a massive compressor!) and use a bucket of sugar soap solution and a mop to get and oil/grease/etc off. 5) Get it in primer. Pretty confidant by best economical choice for doing this is killrust etch primer. Tomorrows jobs (expect a few of todays jobs to end up in this list...) 1) Put a coat of white on (exterior gloss white paint). Although Solaguard is "soft" I like the fact that it has been around forever and probably will continue to be around for a long time. Will make touch ups and recoats in the future easy. 2) Put another coat of white on! This weeks plans: Repair the door, has cracks in the vent section at the top. Thinking about taking the vent section out and putting a window there instead. The vent in my door is up the top so not used for LPG. I'll still have it so that it opens to the fly screen section in hot weather. Have a new latch kit as mine is broken. Cut a new window from acrylic to replace the piece of white painted 3mm plywood that is currently in one of the window frames Make either an acrylic skylight or a piece of aluminium to replace the 4 season hatch. Mine leaks like a sieve and after all this work I don't want to risk re-installing it and having it leak again even if I "fix" it. This will get the van weatherproof for now so that it can be stored outside whilst I hunt for an alternative hatch and the money to pay for it. Reinstall the windows, door, trim strips, etc, all using some very permanent polyurethane based sealant. I know they were made with mastic in the 70's but technology has moved on since then and I intend to have this thing for 20+ years. I don't want to ever have to stuff around cleaning off mastic ever again!

Geez mate, u r powering along now ! It's amazing how much time these vans take up, lol.... Was chatting to the paint shop in Dandenong yesterday. Sells all the main brands, and he reckons Solagard is perfect for our old vans. I was gonna try and find a heat resistant paint for the roof, but the guy reckons paint companies make some 'pretty big claims' with that stuff...... Hence, he's convinced me to run with Solagard gloss......

Have to tell my ashdown rep to sharpen his pencil! Got everything done except the priming. The guy at the paint store convinced me I'd look at it for 20 years and regret not doing it properly All masked up ready for priming at about 6AM tomorrow Be lost without my forklift!

Looking good, I found in my Arrow that the seams in the roof are leaking so I used Sika roof and gutter that is UV resistant. Have a look the condition in yours before painting.

Oh by properly I meant spray rather than roll
The booth (this place has everything) has lots of junk in it so I have to spray it outside. Wind is supposed to be calm early tomorrow

Sean, you've got some decent drilling gear in that yard - I'm assuming that's what you do?

Bought enough for 3 coats. Figured that being sprayed it will go on a thinner than a rolled or brush painted coat.
Turned out I was right, I rolled the roof because spraying it was too hard and it will rarely be seen and you can't see any primer through the white, where as on the sides where I've sprayed you can still see some grey coming through.
2 more coats and she should be looking schmick (I hope, I'm no spray painter!)
Then I have all the trim to paint. She who must be obeyed as decided that the edge stripping and the window frames need to be gloss black rather than aluminium
Going to do the stripe down the side in gloss black as well.
Windows are going to be charcoal acrylic rather than clear, $11 each to cut them out if I drop off the glass ones to copy + the sheet of acrylic.
It's not going to look AS classic but I hope it looks OK
And yes, I run a drilling company, hence all the toys and space. The good stuff is away working, that's just some junk we have laying around in the background
