What she wants she tends to get!
Just tossing up painting the black stripe or getting a sticker made with the Franklin lettering.
I have a "sticker guy" I use a lot so the sticker won't cost much, especially if there's beer here when he puts it on!

Yeah, seems to be going on OK and looking OK. I wanted a paint that would never ever need polishing in order to stay looking good. With all the ridge lines in the cladding polishing it would have been a PITA. An automotive paint would have given a better finish, but in a few years time I recon this will look better than an automotive paint - unless you have a heck of a lot of spare time / keep it in a shed.
Thinning it down with a dash of water and running a supercheap auto spray gun at 80psi seems to do the trick - but I'm not expert and I'm probably doing a lot of things wrong.
Ended up with a couple of runs this time, I got told to lay it on a bit thicker than the first coat but I evidently went a touch too thick. The sun wasn't up and I was trying to get it sprayed before anybody started moving trucks around kicking up dust so started in the pre-dawn glow. Nobody who has walked past it in the workshop today has noticed the runs until I pointed them out.
Bit of 600grit should sort them out before I shoot the last coat on
Next project is an old T-Liner truck before it has a date with the auctions. Should never have shown an interest in fixing up old stuff at work...

Looks unreal Sean. the mob that I bought my Solagard from in Wodonga told me that 'this stuff sticks like s@&t to a blanket', and will be fine on our vans........

Yeah it's just a bit soft for stone chips and the like, but that's the trade off for not going chalky or needing polishing.

Update for this afternoon: Got the final coat of white on this morning, put a new 15A jigger on, new water filler, all the lights are on and working, sanded, repaired as necessary, masked and primed all the loose bits that need some paint (stone guard, door, fridge hatch), went to Darios and got a bunch of little bits and pieces that I'll need when putting it back together, and got all my supplies together for sticking everything back in tomorrow. I figured it was best to give her 24hours for the last coat of paint to cure before I go smothering adhesives on around the edge strips and windows I'm going to rock the boat with gluing it back together. Going to use a very very permanent flexible polyurethane adhesive for the edge stripping but mastic on the window frames. Hopefully by this time tomorrow arvo she'll be ready to go home! Only thing I forgot to get from the shop were the rivets to stick the Franklin badges back on!

I found with mine, that you start to get an idea of how much to put on etc to minimize the mess after awhile. Still a bloody messy job though. Getting as much off with a thin scraper before you grab the metho seemed to work for me. Less chance of taking any paint off during clean up.

At least when you clean up the excess you know you got coverage.

Has been suggested to dummy up the pieces, mask around them, remove, add adhesive, and the tape makes cleanup easier when the goo oozes out

That sounds like a plan Sean. Anything that makes it easier to limit the mess....
Also Sean, what did did you use to sand the old girl ? I've got some old baked on moss that I've scraped off the front and rear, but has left marks and rough bits.
Is it ok to use an elec sander, or is that too harsh on the alumin ?
Not planning on getting it back to metal to paint (unless it needs it of course).
Sugar soap it and see how much paint is left, and etch any exposed metal...

Sean, how many lts of Solagard you have used in the Arrow? i asking that because I am looking in painting my van using a Wagner spray unit. Mitre 10 have Solagard 4lt can for $25 until the 20/12 which it is a very good saving. 12 liters will be enough?
Cheers

Check your sugarsoap bottle, some say not to use on aluminium. I ended up using a bit of palmolive instead to get it clean I sanded the whole thing by hand with these: www.masters.com.au/product/100147181/i-need-sanding-block-mediumWas the best option with all the ridge lines I practiced spraying on an old sheet of metal, I tested cleaning up the mastic around the windows with turpentine on this and it didn't bother the paint at all so cleanup was easy. I've used 3/4 of the big yellow bucket of solaguard. I think these are 10 or so litres? can't remember.

Thanks Sean, I guess that at $25 for 4 lts will be good to get 3 cans to be sure. The question is go gloss or low sheen. Planning to get one of THIS

Gloss, low sheen is porous.
I etch primed the whole van so that I had a uniform starting point.
Nobody I know has had a good enough result with an airless sprayer to attempt a van. Get a big scrap to practice on first (eg a bonet from a wrecker - offer a 6pack)
As of this arvo the door is back in complete with 2 new locks, all the windows are in (one rebuilt with acrylic and new rubbers) door flap is on, the stone guard is painted ready to go on, new towel rail is on the front, safety chains are extended and some of the stripping is on.
At this rate I might still tackle the interior before Christmas. There's nothing wrong with the interior it's just that we don't like the wood grain

More than one person told me that it is easy and faster than a roller and better finish as well. I do not know how will go with a 12mm pile roller on the cladding in the Arrow and not so sure about marks if a use a brush.
