Had a similar problem drum running hot, leading shoe dragging on front right hand wheel, tried everything nothing appeared wrong/out of place/aligned and slackened hand brake cable, finally leading shoe badly worn and replaced the complete backing plate/drum all fixed.
I had replaced both front backing plate/drums after I had towed 350km with handbrake applied, so the offender was new chased the problem for 2 years.
Best of luck finding why the brake is getting hot ( Check leading shoe for signs of wear ).

Thanks - if it is a backing plate issue I’ll go beat the dealer who sold it to me with it and get them to supply new ones. 😁

snoops - I replaced both Drum and Backing Plate Complete, the problem may have been the drum, There did not appear to be any problem with the 1st replacement Drum/Backing Plate/Shoes/springs, however the Drum had blue hot spots showing on the shoe mating surface grouped together and the leading shoe was badly worn on the top 30%, the trailing shoe showed virtually no wear I had travelled about 3,500km.

I read about some one who got a out of round drum and it wouldn't have to be out by much to cause problems .

I had to replace my set up on the Franklin. New backing plate brackets welded on ( to accomodate new backing plate assemblies) including new drums ( pre assembled, to save me some time)Travelled approx 70ks and on a slight downhill run had to pull up at roadworks and noticed small amount of smoke coming from both wheels and burning smell
I flipped over the brake lever( hyd overide) and drove for 30ks and all was well.
Flipped the lever back over ( to allow brakes to operate) and it never missed a beat for the next 300 plus ks
Not sure what to make of it, but after short Easter trip I’ll pull the drums off to take a peak........ Frustrating !

Well, I'm back from my first trip - 10 nights in the Viscount. Most of these on one site with friends - you'll see in the pic below we have both out vans facing each other with awnings nearly touching to make one large shady area - worked very well. All in all it went very well, with just a few small things to be ironed out - mostly where we had stuff stored. Everything worked well and I think I may have overdone the batteries as even when we ran the inverter all night running a full sized pedastal fan, batteries only came down to around 90% and charged to 100% well before mid day. Towed great once I removed the brakes - that still needs to be sorted, but will have to wait a while now due to work and other commitments. A winters overnight with heaters running,( sounds ideal for guilt free fan heaters) will decide the battery issue, me thinks!

So, almost finished installation of the HWS over the last couple of nights, but finding just a meter of 3/8" copper to connect it has been the most difficult part. The local plumbing supplies want to sell me a 10 meter roll and there doesn't seem to be a gas plumber in town who wants to sell me a bit yet... Anyway, here's a pic of ot done apart from the gas line. Untitled by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Diesel heater next, it's cooling down i the evenings now. 👍

Our local one only has 1/2" and 3/4" unfortunately and the website doesn't show anything smaller from what I could find.

Installed the cheapy diesel heater I paid $250 delievered for - I think it may actually be too big for the van - it is a 5KW unit, but even at it's lowest setting it kicks out heaps of hot air - will see when it is actually cold though. 😁
There isn't much in them - not sure how some companies can justify over $1000 for a small casting, fan, control unit and electric fuel pump. Yeah, probably better quality and the R&D, etc but still. Maybe if you were using one everyday it may be worth it but for the odd use mine will get, happy with what I've ended up with.
It draws 10 amps for around 2 minutes while starting up then drops to around 2.5 amps when running on low up to 3.5 amps going flat stick. I will have to do something with the exhaust of it - it wouldn't be much fun for other campers running it on a cold still morning - it has a horrible drone to it. Will buy a muffler for it and some exhaust wrap as well I think which hopefully will make it bearable for those around me - inside with the door closed you can barely hear it, but I wouldn't want to camp next to one that hasn't been silenced...
Not sure how it will go in sub zero conditions as the fuel line has to run under the van and it goes in the bottom of the unit so likely to freeze up when you need it most probably. Looking at how it's made, it could be modified to keep everything inside the van - will see how things pan out before I go down that path, but doable if needed.

Oh - I also recently scored a modern 14' awning that is damaged but easily repairable. Got it for nothing and not 100% sure I'll be using it yet - it depends on how it looks so I'll offer it up on some blocks and see if I can live with what it looks like. Half of me doesn't want to but the other half would really like something that can be deployed quickly and easily...
Time will tell...

your fuel should be alright being diesel. The wife wanted a pull out awning but the width of it on the side of the van would take very close but possibly over the max allowable width. the old van is close to 8 ft wide newer vans seem to be a bit narrower.

Diesel goes jelly like when it gets down below zero and we often camp in much colder conditions that that - had a friend with a diesel heater that stopped working on a -7 degree night a couple of years back - we were in the back of the 101 under canvas that night - brrrr.
Will see how it goes but I woukd expect the very thin plastic lines to cause the diesel to freeze pretty quick when it gets cold.

maybe help if pipe is run in conduit then fill conduit with foam gap filler may help I haven't been stopped long enough in the bitter cold to have a problem with diesel.

may have to test a small piece to mack sure the gap filler doesn't eat it. Though I would assume it would be alright made to be tolerant of a lot of chemicals used for cleaning and De-greasing.

On a different note, I now have an awning that I can fit up to the van, but the question is do I or don't I? Unit is slightly too long but can be shortened easily. Even came with anti flapper kit. Needs new canvas but that's only a few hundred dollars compared to the $1500 a new one is. Problem is its looks... It will sit up above the roofline slightly at each end so thinking it will look dicky when packed up but should that concern me? Probably won't be so bad with it out, but I'm a bit torn...
Don't want to go drilling holes in the van only to find I hate it... I'll prop it up with some timber but looking for opinions here - yes or no? I won't be upset with either opinion as I really don't know myself. Anyone here have a modern awning on an old van?

Hi Snoops, my opinion (from a few years of gawking at classic vans is that they don’t look ‘right’. I’m sure it would function alright but nothing really beats a sail track awning which suits the era and last decades. On the other hand, you seem to have got this one at the right price! Maybe put it on gumbay and use the proceeds to go towards a more authentic one? That’s my thought anyway, but I’m a novice. I’m typing this from the Franklin at Airlie Beach.....

That's the way I've been leaning to be honest, wonder how much I could get for it?
Hope the Arrow is doing you proud mate - make sure you update us when you're back - no rush, enjoy your holidays. Kids find it ok? Enough light from the reading lamps in the bunks for your Daughter?

G'day snoops.
Yes, I've seen the roll-out awnings fitted to these Classic vans, and the ones that sit above the curve of the roof at the ends, seem to be rather "out of place" to me. I've also seen them in 'shorter' lengths where they fit within the curve of the roof, but obviously don't give as much cover beside the van. These shorter versions look ok, but the downside is the loss of undercover area.
Millards have a flatter roof for most of the caravan length, so roll-out awnings seem to suit this brand ok. Same for some of the Franklin models (eg. the Arrow, and Hunter).
cheers, Al.

If you decide to use it before you drill holes and set it up measure width of van then work out how far out from wall unit sits from memory I think is 8ft 2inch is standard width no flags needed. The police any council rangers and the states registration authority's can all measure fine and hold you there until it is rectified not that this would happen too often but no need to have a chance to be in that predicament. Have fun If the frame is in good condition I would think $300 needing canvas would be a sell quick price makes the whole thing repaired about half the price of new.
