Hey Gents Thought I'd add a couple of photos of recent work on the van Decided to make a mould of the rear awning Because it was in good order and the front one isn't The mould will be used to make two.... one for front and back The original front awning was painted and repaired ...... but...... It still looks like it has gone a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson This is the original aluminium rear awning. Worse for wear after the mould was removed Took a far bit of the paint with it. Still useable but..... with a fair amount of work The mould was cleaned up, polished, waxed 6 times and then a new awning made in fibreglass over the top. The first photo shows the mould under the new awning (still stuck together) After a bit of belting and quite persuasion..... This happened The mould is leaning up against the wall Have to remove all the excess fibreglass, fix the small problems, then cut and polish the front section. So it will be interesting to see how it works out when it is fitted over the next week or so. Have to get piano hinge to fit the awning to the rear of the van Decided to make a mould also because it will now not allow any metal streaks down the inside of the awning when it rains. A problem with my original aluminium ones. As well as it was a chance to try something new. Cheers Atog

Hi atog Your skills with fibreglass never cease to amaze me. 8-)Seems that when ever an idea pops into your head the very next day out comes a product duly fabricated in fibre glass. Sure wish I had them talents... Most impressive looking awning you have built there. Yes that horrid grey streak that appears after some rain.. on the side of a van is a real pain in the proverbial... Well done. bobt

Hey Gents Well the panelvan is not in bad order for its age There are a few minor rust issues as you would expect for a car in Nth Qld after 26 years Tailgate upper has some welding to do and the lower is in need of some attention as well Couple of rust holes in it here and there But all in all not in bad shape for the 450,000 klms on the clock 1983 WB Holden Panelvan First owner had it most of its life then has had three owners in the past 9 months...... me being the third Bench seat ,,,,, actually part of the attraction.... now I can take the wife and daughter with me camping. One to cook one to clean ;D ;D Column shift Auto 202 blue motor purrs like a kitten No cracks in the dash and a standard dash..... GTS would have been nice ow well Came complete with roadworthy Knocked $800 off the asking price No need to go to the ends of the earth to get it either 15 minutes from home Needed something for work and for towing the Olympic so this is it for the next ...... who knows how long Sadly not this weekend..... Have to do some extra work to pay for the 6 months rego just put on it yesterday Rego and transfer fee..... $610 ouch Anyway have a couple of customers from my old trade asking for work to be done ..... they paid in advance.... gotta love that So this weekend is head down bum up ;D ;D Over the coming weeks will do a bit here and there on it Mate of mine knows were there is a Premier stationwagon going begging. About to be wrecked Can have the whole thing for nothing or just take what parts we need..... got an airconditioner and power steering in it ;D ;D ;D So may just sneak over and have a look soon Tool box in hand of course Oh and did I mention it has a towbar ;D ;D ;D ;D Cheers for now Atog

,G'day ATOG, The Holden may not go like a 265 Hemi Drifter but I'll bet London to a brick it was a lot cheaper. If you get the power steer and a/c from that Premier you'll be set mate. Cheers, Ross.

And I thought you were locked into Mopar power Actually it doesn't matter what you tow it with so long as it gets the Olympic out and about AND being used!!! Looks a good buy there Atog. Don't take any notice of those people whose Olympic hasn't moved for a few years and should be doing more work on it at the moment anyway but is busy doing other things ;D ;D ;D. Cheers, techron

Hey Guys I thought I was locked into Mopar or no car as well But as always practicality overrides desire...... So no 21 foot Olympic or CL Chrysler panel van .... 16ft Olympic and Holden panel van ....... weellllll some of the words are the same ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D The mattress and what not in the back will have to wait for awhile as I am looking to hunt up and remove repair any rust damage on the car over the next few weeks We'll see what happens Cheers Atog

Hey atog
The Holden is a good choice. You can get parts any where for her. And they are real easy to work on, plenty of room under the bonnet to get to all the important bits.
They are reliable and durable. Just cause you want to tart it up to match the same standard as the Olympic is absolutely no reason not to take the Olympic out for a run or two or more...
Keep us all posted now.

Hi Atog, Fibreglass has really got into your blood hasn't it. ;D ;D Not content with fibreglassing the Olympic but you go and start converting the WB over to it. At least it doesn't rust. I know you will be busy over the next few weeks getting the 'Olden' ready to tow the 'Olympic' but we are still waiting with baited breath for the conclusion of your last fibreglass exercise. You know, the all singing and dancing awnings. How did they go? Did they work? What do they look like on the van? We're just curious, thats all. Some piccies would be nice !!! Cheers, techron.

Hey Techron Mate - I have several projects on at the moment and haven't completed any of them At last count four projects- All in fibreglass Not including the repair to the WB vents The awning is still at the same stage as the last post suggested Except yesterday I bought enough stainless steel piano hinge to do both front and back Yes I am addicted to fibreglass as there is so much that can be done with it Have made something else for the van this week and will reveal it in due time Plus have a couple of bits to make for the WB pvan Even though I currently am between jobs it doesn't mean I have any spare time Busier than a one legged man in an @rse kicking competition - Current unemployment rate in Cairns: 12.5% Update Saturdays paper... 17/10/09 Unemployment rate in Cairns ..... 13.8% Quoted as the highest unemployment rate on the East Coast of Australia So work is definitely not easy to find here Not being one to sit around complaining about the state of the nation - have decided to prep for any possible work, anywhere What does that mean? If the caravan and car are in a state of readiness....... who says we can't start doing short working trips around Qld and maybe NSW? Daughter finishes grade 10 in 7weeks so there is a deadline if we are all going away to work. That and the funds are very limited, so time is short either way. Actually am quite excited at the prospects of working elsewhere Have been in Cairns since.... 1994 and the area since 1980 So have had very little time to see other parts of this wide brown land sooooooo ........... If I can't find suitable work here...... You get the idea If the mountain won't come to Mohammad ...... Some progress photos soon ...... I promise ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Cheers Atog The excited

Hi Atog Well I have looked and I have turned my head to the left and to the right. Have not quite turned upside down yet. But I am going to make a guess.. I reckon they are either hand grips or foot holds. I am trying to nut out what else there is inside the van that you have not completed and could possibly make??? No prizes if I am wrong....

G'day Atog, I reckon the first thingy is a mould in the making for the top half of the door on the Olympic ? The other 16 thingys have they something to do with flyscreens to fit on the windows? There's my couple of guesses. Cheers Bob.

Hey Bobt Not hand or foot grips Hey B&J That is a good idea !!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D Might keep that one in the back of my noggin for later NO sorry.... the first one was a box before it was disassembled About 500mm wide x 460 high x 430 deep Still working on it ;D ;D ;D ;D The blue stuff covering the timber is a clueTypical of me Start four jobs and finish nothing ...... Soon I promise ..... soon At least that is what I tell the Missus ;D ;D ;D ;D The second guess...... close to the flyscreens which haven't been made yet ....... But not flyscreen related ;D ;D ;D Cheers Atog Update Just a little more on what else is being done for the Olympic These bits on the bench go with what is made for the inside Any guesses? You must be able to get this one.... Come on Mike..... what do ya think? ;D ;D

OK Guys Give up? Cut the little white things in half and shaped like this Why? So I could Matrix them to these You will also notice that there are now flyscreens in the van Yep... flyscreens OK so it isn't that big a newsflash But it is held in place with.... magnets Yep Jumped on the internet, found a supplier of magnetic strips Ordered a 30mtre roll total cost delivered $56 Missus cut and sewed the flyscreens up I fitted them along with the cut outs and bingo..... finished Added to that Completed and fitted the rear awning Haven't made the front one yet as it Cheers Atog

Crikey atog...is there anything you can't do with fibreglass?? I can see this Olympic being furnished with fibreglass cups, saucers, plates, etc., the way you are going! Gotta hand it to ya...all those 'extras' you are doing to the van sure make it a real unique Olympic! Wouldn't be surprised if you tell us one day that you've decided to get rid of the metal chassis and make a fibreglass version!! You've certainly got the talent for it! Amazing stuff... cheers, Al.
