Just did some googling and found that a 40mm square axle with Holden bearings is good for 1000KG, so that's fine for anticipated loading. Will run the van over a weighbridge when I move it to see where it is at now but I anticipate somewhere around 1,600KG for a van this size - does that sound about right? The block of flats here says 1590kg on the rego label (tare). I've never weighed it though as it's simply not relevant. No matter what it weighs empty/loaded. It will still probably only be 50% of the range rover tow capacity. I would expect that to be quiet a bit lighter than the block of flats. It will be far more lightly built ... probably much better built with aluminium frame etc... I'm guessing closer to 1400kg seeya, shane L.

Snoops. 1,600 Double Chevron. 1,400
Any other guesses? You’ve got a couple of weeks before it makes a weighbridge. 😊

You’ve got a couple of weeks before it makes a weighbridge. 😊 They would have been design to be towed by the V8 passenger sedans of there time. Now way will it be more than 1500kgs.... as back then you were into light truck territory! seeya, Shane L.

So that's 4 in at the moment. I've ordered all new exterior lights for it as the originals have faded and cracked over the years. They are original looking Hella and Narva Vintage tail lights and clearance lights - I'll be modifying these so I don't get the ongoing issues I have with festoon globes - for a start I'll be getting LED bulbs for them but secondly I'm going to solder the little buggers in there as they will inevitably come loose and start flickering or go out, which is the biggest downfall of these. I figure if I solder the LED globes in I should get the reliability of a modern LED fitting with the vintage looks and they should be much brighter.

I cheated with my 1960 vintage van and installed festoon led globes inside the 'vintage' light fittings. I used the warm white globes for the blinkers/indicators, and the cool white globes for the stop/tail lights. I bought the globes that had the diodes laid out on a flat surface, as per this photo... The flat surface gives me maximum light being directed to the rear for viewing. To stop the globe rotating in the end holders, I stuck a small strip of 10mm-thick foam on the back (underside) of the flat face. I haven't had any problems with them so far, after towing for 3000+ kms. Only note of caution I can give is that the lengths of the globes being listed when I bought mine, were slightly longer than the globes that came with the original light fittings. I couldn't get exactly the same length in the led globes, so I had to reshape (bend) the end terminals in the light base slightly to accommodate the new ones snugly. cheers, Al.

Cool, thanks. That’s the style I’m looking for but haven’t found any with that area yet. I’ve ordered some off fleaybay (for a few dollars) and I’ll see if they are bright enough, but they only have 2 rows.

For the warm white, eebuy item no. 390616081815 will point you in the right direction.
For the cool white, see 190615526381 for an example.
I had to educate myself about the relative light emission levels of the various diode sizes. It seems 12 diodes of 5050 size is good for indicators and stop lights, and 6 to 8 diodes of 5050 size is for tail lights. Not a hard and fast rule, but is working well for me.
cheers, Al.

There is a problem with fitting new LED globes in old reflectors. Good from immediately behind but not so good from the side?
I fitted bayonet globes to my stop/tail/indicate in repo housings & they work well.
12v led globes fitted inside the van are just OK, but they are only globes.

Hmmm, hadn’t thought of that. The lights have just turned up so I’ll have to have a play - clearance lights particularly might be an issue...

Oh, and the lights have turned up - all Narva units from Vintage Caravan Spares - quick plug for these guys, very easy to deal with and fast delivery. The main tail lights don’t have festoon globes any more! They have bayonette globes - didn’t expect that, but I can work with it. Would go and fit them this weekend but we’re supposed to get 4” of rain on the weekend here. Bummer... C368D6FE-7237-4DF1-A6D8-12625A950920 by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr

Hey Snoops, Don't forget to earth back to the chassis, a bit more work but you will reap the benefits on a rainy night. Talk about rain, we have had enough in SE Qld.

Got the same tail lights, just be careful when wiring these up I had to make some small adjustments to get them to fit. Maybe you will be lucky enough for them to go straight on.

The existing lights are similar, so I’ll get them to fit on eway or the other. 😊

Got a couple of hours in tonight after work. New hitch plate cut and welded on - 6mm plate. 4F2F7098-C40E-4FE8-AA60-A0670F1014FB by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Existing bottom plate was then cut out and another 6mm plate welded on the bottom. Whole lot was then etch primed and it and the draw bar painted with a coat of killrust silver. Way overkill I know but that’s how I like to do things. Crush tubes will be installed when the hitch is fitted and a plate welded over the front bit. It will be strong as and last another 40 years at least. 😊. The rest of the draw bar and chassis is in very good condition and it will just get a wire brush and paint at some stage. New hitch will be installed the day I move it, leaving it like it is at the moment makes it pretty theft proof. 😊 9D115F36-EE55-41C2-9255-33760EC48A19 by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr 80FA5716-BD10-4BC1-ABA1-2D5054FA7D79 by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Then onto lighting, the old Hella units are actually in good condition apart from the faded lenses. Inside wasn’t corroded at all - the old lights have a small 1/8” hole in the bottom of the lense so any moisture can get out. The new ones don’t, so maybe I’ll be making that mod to the new ones. 85173467-65BB-4176-9268-182C03A5BFC7 by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Mounted the new rear lights but forgot my soldering iron so couldn’t finish that. Hopefully have the rest of the lights fitted and working later this week. Moving day will hopefully be the 16th. 👍

Just curious as to why you didn't go with LED tail and side lights?
When I did my van I found LED side lights an exact match to the originals.

Availability mostly - haven’t found anything that looks like the originals in LED - if you have a link to some I’d be happy to see them 😊. Even if the are available, I bet they’d be a whole lot more than these cost. Got some LED globes coming which I’m going to solder into the fittings so I’ll have the best of both worlds - original look with reliability and decent brightness. 😊
