Thanks Lawrence and Shane. So, I take it Viscount didn't have a "standard" wheel. That info you put me on to is most helpful. I want to change the stud pattern and axles on the tandem car trailer at some later date and I'll go down to the trailer parts supplier armed with that print out. I wouldn't say they don't or didn't have a standard wheel/hub. It is you/we don't know what someone else may have changed over the years. Plus there are no spare part manuals for these classic vans. Working out what axle/bearing/brakes etc can send you around the bend, if you have a good trailer place nearby go have a chat with them when the time comes and they will work it all out.

That's for sure. My trailers are HQ, so I tried to convert the 'van here to HQ..... the bearing seats in the drums were about 2mm deeper, so they hit the backing plates. Nothing is standardised unless you go to modern Chinese parts. If caravan is located near ballarat, I can helpout to get it mobile (I might even have the right wheels here you can borrow to move it. the car trailer has HQ the caravan HT 14").

They are the original wheels. They are the original cross ply tyres. They have never been off the van. I've bought the van from the original owners estate. Off to measure the studs now.

I'd say that's why it hasn't leaked ... it's never been moved, so the rock hard old clay like mastic hasn't cracked.... I reckon as soon as you tow it down the road it'll leak like a sieve... You need to remove all the J moulds, the windows, the 4seasons hatches..... here's where I did my 'van : ditzygypsy.proboards.com/thread/2647/old-chesneysadly that's for sale ... as I've bought another ... and am in the same situation as you.... it still wears the original tires and has obviously sat for 20+ years without moving in a farm shed You can see where it's leaking in several places since it was moved 4years ago. The caravan place is supposed to be delivering it this week (they have already patched two leaks for me in the 3weeks it's taken to get it ready for them to deliver). The thing will leak from EVERYWHERE if I left it out all winter. all the old clay based mastic will be like concrette and will have cracked all over the place once the thing was towed after sitting for 20+ years. I've spent the last two weeks busily butchering one of the crappy old sheds in my yard to make it 4meters longer ... so it'll fit in while I re-seal it over winter this year. If I left it out for a full winter it would no doubt be rotten as buggery in a lot of places. At the moment it has two mostly hidden places of water staining. I hope it hasn't got worse in the 3weeks it's sat since I purchased it ('cos it's sitting outside and we have had a LOT of rain). seeya, Shane L.

Goo thing is that you can do a bit at a time as I am doing. Yeah I didn't say it was difficult ... It is a BIG job The 'van arrived here yesterday, looks, smells and seems dry inside. Feeling around iwth my hand I've found dampness around one of the 4seasons hatches and several of the windows... if I'd left it outside all winter I'd have a a rotten frame and lots of plywood to replace She'll be fine though.... Just lots and lots of hours of scraping off old sealing and replacing it I still reckon his Mick's van will leak like a sieve as soon as he moves it. The old concrete like mastic will develop millions of fine little cracks as soon as it's wheel roll down the road and the 'van twists and flexes slightly It would be a real shame to let that incredible caravan interior get damaged! Do know anyone that has an old hay shed or carport you can stash it under ? seeya, Shane L.

Well, it has been moved a little. Had a few problems. This broke: Anyone got a spare lying about? And these couldn't be wound up and so now are broken: But, it moved, quite easily: I need to find the correct decal. You can just make out the shape of the original. Oh, and all movable parts of the jockey wheel have seized.

When we got Vincent home I had misgivings to what I had bought. But now you are home these things wont break again, so you are already going ahead, keep thinking its a great looking van with so much potential. Plenty of advice & encouragement always here at the forum.

Plenty of advice & encouragement always here at the forum. Isn't that the truth .... I'd tow that home, reseal it, clean it .... clay bar it ... paint the frame and advertise it for $10K ..... If it leaks before it's resealed and gets full of water damage ..... I'd replace the $10K, with $2800 ... 'cos it's then just like every water stained 'van out there with a huge question mark hanging over it.... as you can't tell if the frame is rotten as buggery behind the water stained walls seeya, Shane L.

It ain't home yet. It's only about ten feet from where it was. Ok, it moved about a hundred feet to get there. I'm not going to get it any sort of distance until I get the hitch sorted.

I have heard of near new hitches snapping, so hence why I redid the lot on mine with new drawbar and fittings as I didnt want to risk it.

Well, the van was moved some months back. It had to be moved by a certain date as the property it was on was being sold and had I not moved it, I would have lost it. I won't put up photo's of how it was hitched. Suffice it to say it involved a trailer hitch lock and a padlock.
Progress? Not a lot. The locks had always been a little dicky. After the move, the only one that the key would open, the door, stopped working. Now all the locks are fixed. Including the locks for the air conditioner vent at the back.

Pity the pics are all gone, but I'll stick some new ones up. As per my post in my Franklin thread, I'm very appreciative of Mick for selling this onto me. Plans are to keep it as original as possible and do the bare minimum to make it usable.

Ok, see if this works - Yay!!! Pics aren't great quality sorry, they are a copy of cop of a copy, but I'll get new ones as soon as I'm able. Here it is before being moved - it sat here for around 30 years. It is now about 50 metres from here in the next yard as this property was sold. It has very little water damage inside - just one spot that I can find about the size of a plate. I think the fact it wasn't moved after the original mastic went hard has saved it. It has a cover on it at the moment, so still dry. First job when I get it home will be to wash the lichen off - I see from another thread that Mick started that this isn't hard - don't worry, the pressure washer won't be going near it. Van by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Next pic is the front area - this will remain how you see it with the exception of some new curtains - and the removal of the net curtains - I'm not a fan of these. Not sure if the fridge works - it did 30 years ago... If I can't resurrect it I'll install a new Engel 12 volt fridge - they make one that is a direct replacement for these older units and they are much more efficient when the temp rises as well. My 12 volt system will easily be able to run this - that will be 200 watts of solar on the roof plus a 150 watt portable panel feeding at least 200AH of batteries (depends on weight of van and location for batteries yet) Van3 by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Finally the Bunk room - to start with, all I plan here is to remove the upper bunks and maybe the mattresses as I don't think my back is up to one of these originals. SWMBO wanted a double bed, but I'm trying to convince her this will work - she says she will try it. I don;t want to remove the cupboards and if you look closely in the bottom of the cupboard, there's a small AC unit in here - chances are this is cactus but if it is, I'll just fit a new reverse cycle unit here which will take care of both heating and cooling for the van. Also, the chassis and draw bar are fine and only need minor work. The draw bar is actually 100 x 6mm 'C' section so very strong and can't hold water like box section can, so no rust - it would take 100 years to rust through this I think. I'll check carefully the welds, etc that hold this to the chassis, but as the chassis is what looks like 3mm angle iron, I'm not expecting too many dramas there either to be honest. I can easily reinforce the drawbar to chassis mounting if it looks like it will be an issue - I'll run some heavy walled 25 x 25 from the front of the draw bar and triangulate this back to the front spring hanger - sort of like what I've done on the Franklin but without having to replace the entire drawbar.
The hitch needs some work as well, and I'll pull the wheels and brakes before I move it to ensure it will make the trip home ok (that's only 1/2 hour or so, so not a big first trip).
