Hey Ted,
The solar panels look good & sound useful.
Paid work is very important but it does get in the way sometimes I agree.
The reason I asked about the weight of the solar panels is because I have considered putting an air-conditioned on the roof of my Egg - the lightest one I can find is 43kgs plus the weight of the 'H' frame mounting rack.
A number of problems there: 1. The roof was never meant to carry that much weight 2. I use my big old fashion circus tent style annex regularly so the 'H' frame would have to fit under the annex rail on the left side some how so that the annex 'slides' could still be used. (trying to keep it as original as possible) 3. Some major works (as well as strengthening) would have to be carried out on the roof of my egg by someone who knows what there doing
So I guess I'll do without air-conditioning for a bit longer lol lol.
Anyway, all sounds good at your end
I'll look forward to the pics mate.
Cheers, Des

Hey Ted,
Just realised I forgot a question.
Do you know if it is possible to connect a generator directly into the Egg mate??
I'm not sure because, as you would already know, there are no circuit breakers in the Egg so I'm not sure about safety.
I'm guessing that the generator has a fuse or circuit breaker system but is that enough??
Sorry to drain your brain mate but I figure you may have already come across this situation and would know.
Tks & Cheers,
Des

I've been off air for a while as I'm trying to get the van finished before its been a year from starting. My van was an 8 birth before the reno and only weighed 890kg. If your van is out or rego then you will have to take it over a weigh-bridge. Regards Ted

Sorry mate but i've been flat-out with work, working on van and trip we took to Tassie in March (was peed off the van wasn't ready). To answer your question.- I always connect a "earth leakage" and "circuit breaker" to all my old vans since my misses got zapped about 7 yrs ago. The egg now has a 130ah battery, 160w solar panels, an inverter to power the fridge while driving (I've got a seperate earth leakage and circuit breaker just for the inverter). I bought a small generator in 2004 and to this date I still havn't put any petrol in it as the tow vehicle and the solar panels keep the battery topped up. Ted

Julia Hi.
Its good to see another Franklin egg getting restored.
Where are you located? and will you be doing the work yourself?
You will need to start up a new post for your van (Al will help you there) with all the details and some photos.
Like how long is your van? Chassis no. etc. etc.
Are there any water leaks?
If you need any ideas or suggestions don't hesitate to ask.
Ted

OK. My windows are still out of the van. The wall opening is 1530mm top, 1535mm bottom with a height of 618mm. The actual window part that sits inside that hole is - 1526mm x 610mm.
Mine were not leaking before I took them out so I'll let you know what happens when I put them in.
If this rain goes away I can finish painting the outside and seal the windows in as I'm getting a lot of water in even though I've got tarps on the van.
Regards Ted

What was stuffed with the old windows? Are the alloy frames cracked or warped? Or are they leaking from the rubber around the glass?
I'll let you know when I fix mine in. I've been wanting to attach them for the last month but with all the rain I havnt finished painting the outside. It will probably stop raining when I seal all the windows so I wont be able to check for leaks.

Hi Ted I took the window frame out with them still in it, cleaned it all up and put it back on, with sealer and the foam around the frame, took the arms off of the windows, the winder bars so that its not poking throw, then i put sealer on where the bars come throw to bloke it up, and on the out side of the window, as well, took thoughs grey plastic things off, covered them with sealer also, checked for any other hole or c but any wayracks and what ever i found i covered up with sealer There should have been no way water was getting in, but it did, cant see how The only way i could see, and this came from the caravan place, was from the windows themselves, the little rubber seal on the edge of the windows was stuffed or not there, they said this is where the water was getting in, and because they cant be fixed or buy the parts ,i was up for new windows I had just replaced all the rubbers for the windows so i know it wasnt leaking from there It got me stuffed but any way, hope yours are good Regards Peter

Peter Firstly are you sure that the water is not coming down from inside the roof (eg. from the skylight - mine was it ran down between the roof alloy and the roof ply and came out inside the window. Hi again Ted, im getting used to this Was looking at your pics again and noticed youve got the shower in, what pump have you used for the shower and are you putting a hot water service in, if so which one and any details on how your doing it would be really great, need to do this for our shower also Regards Peter Secondly the Shower. I got this one from ebay - the pump supplied with the unit works well and I have connected a switch & tap so that I can use it in a caravan park with city presure. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Portable-LPG-GAS-Hot-Water-Shower-Heater-4WD-Caravan-Camp-Fish-Horse-Dog-Bonus-/271583730456?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3f3ba6db18I got the gas plumber to connect a quick release for the gas & water so I can mount it on the side of the van when I set-up camp. I'll get photos when I finish painting. I hope this helps Ted

Amazing renovation. Your skills are truly impressive. Reading this I just had an 'oh no' moment. I resealed my rear window and hosed it down. No leaks. I'm not looking forward to taking the cover off and seeing what happens when it rains. The volume of water leaking through the rear window when I bought it would suggest something like you say is more likely as the culprit!

You said that it took 15min for any sign of water. Well I'm wondering if...... after turning off the tap and the water on the outside stops ........... how long before the water stops on the inside.
Have you checked the joining seams on the roof? Have you taken off the edging, cleaned and resealed them all along the roof? How many roof hatches do you have?
I got 50mm x 70mm alloy angle and sikaflexed it all the way around both my hatches. They havn't leaked since. Before that the water would come out at the hatch and above the rear window.
I don't know what else to suggest.
Oh the sun is out I might get some painting done yet.
Regards Ted

Hi Ted, , yeah all the caravan has been stripped and sealed, and i took the ply back off the rear of the van inside so it can dry, and can see water coming in on the edge of the window frame on the bottom, after having the window out 3 times i made sure this time it would seal, i plastered sealer on every thing and over killed the frame when i put it on, used 2 tubes of sika around the frame, gives you an idea of how much i put on The hatch has been rebuilt and sealed properly so no water leak there Theres some thing wrong some where with the window but for the life of me i cant see where if you have any pics of where you recon it could be leaking that would be great, i think may help others as well Regards Peter
