Are steel capped thongs a Cairns invention? I always thought they were Irish safety boots Or should that be flip-flops

Hey Ladies and Gents Well the epic engine rebuild continues. Talk about a looooooooooooooooooooooong winded job Can make a few excuses as to why it has taken so long. No money No time No interest Bone Lazy ;D ;D ;D ;D Took the block to an engine rebuilders to have a broken bolt removed.... After a botched attempt to remove it by yours truly. I didn't break it..... just couldn't get it out even with ezi-outs Also needed new cam shaft bearings after a botched attempt at removing the cam with the oil pump still in the block. Asked how much it would cost to replace the welsh plugs Reply $25 plus materials At that price it was well worth them doing the job. Had them fit stainless plugs. Cam back in to stop numb nut here doing any more damage. So now it's up to refitting the pistons...... Well ..... did that last week Couldn't get them back in so onto You-tube and type in "Fitting pistons" There is a bloke refitting pistons to a tractor engine. Tooo easy...... once I got a ring compressor. Thought I'd post some photos and prove that it is progressing. Notice the rope? Figured it would be such a quick motor it had best be tied down early. Unlike it's rebuilder..... not the quickest snail in the garden Next is the main bearings and the crank. Mate lent me his engine crane to move the engine around. Got it up on the bench and he needed the crane. So now it stays put until sometime in the new year. Glad it's a decently strong bench. Should have this finished some time in January...... But then again I said I'd have it in the WB and running before Xmas. OK to be fair didn't say which January Cheers Atog

Lookin good Mate, Can almost hear it Purrrrrnnnn already, Now are you going to get the crank shaft Miked and reground before fitting new bearings, You had better make sure you fit the bearings the right way around or they will turn in the block, result=== broken shaft ;D ;D same thing with the Big End shells thought that would cheer you up ;D Just love the early Holden motors to work on.......Soooo Easyyyy

Hey Atog and Kiwi Jim.......guess who....it's me.......VK Greenie. Have ya missed me or what? ;D ;D ;D Yeah still alive, currently on another tour of duty in Mackay NQ, and have been here since October 8th, and now here till 31st of Jan 2011. I watch the threads fairly regularly, but note with interest your fun and games Atog, with the motor rebuild with the WB. Well I am not sure if you guys have been watching my travel blog theretroroamers.blogspot.com and if you haven't, since we have been here in Mackay, the Val has been in and out of the mechanical hospital for the last two months. This has been brought about by the original mechanic that rebuilt the 265 Hemi two years ago, so I could comfortably tow the RetroLiner, and get into this traveling thingy with a bit of fun, totally feeeeeeerked it. All to do with the Crowe towing cam, was actually set in wrong. Hence for the last two years the Val has been lacking about a third in power and sucking up gazillions of litres of fuel in the intrem. Feeeeerk again With the positioning of the cam, which incidently was 29 degrees out of skeltor, therefore nothing lined up, and nothing co-ordinated. The end result she has been fairly gutless to be kind. Rather than go through all the trials and tribulations check out the blog, all the good guff is there. Should have the Val back home for the last time no later than this Friday. One is now looking forward to a real Hemi 265, blowing everything off the park No doubt the bank account, will be so much lighter.....but hey one would like to think it is all worth it. Come 1st Feb, it is southward bound to get out of the steam and humidity. Find a real beach, have a swim the surf, sun the buns, just the way the doctor ordered.....bring it on!!!!!!!! After that the plan is to either head for NT or the west coast, but our plans change in the blink of an eye. Keep your eye on the travel blog and follow the adventures of The Retro Roamers.....Yaaaaaaa! Cheers & beers guys vkgreenie

Helllloooooo Vkgreenie, "Man" long time no hear, I have been keeping a close watch on your trials and tribulations with the Val, Great to hear that you have finally got hold of a Mechanic that knows which way is up, Following your recent travels has been interesting as a lot of the places you mentioned, were places we could relate to having been there on the Round-The-Block trip. Now before you chuck a coin into the air as to your next destination.... Check out the Classic Caravan Cruise to the WEST being organized to run around October next year, should be a hell of a lot of fun for all. ditzygypsy.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=clre2&action=display&thread=845&page=1Keep us up-dated as to the Re-birth of the Val Mate, cheers kiwijim

Hey VKG Thought you had gotten lost between the Lava Tubes and ?
What a pain with the mechanic. Sad that some get their qualifications off a Weeties packet.
The Valiant will do all you need and more by the sounds of it. Just think ..... if you were reasonably happy with her before the engine was working properly..... Now you will be over the moon. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I know what you mean about plans changing at the drop of a hat. Happens to us all. One minute you are out and about just looking around next you find yourself in all sorts of fun. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers Atog

Hi there Atog Thanks for the reply. No we didn't get lost after the Undara Lava Tooooobes events, but have traveled for many moons. Although could have got lost very happily at a place called O'Brien's Creek, just NW of Mt. Surprise. Our blog will tell you all about that post. It is only about a four hour run from your place, you should check it out. But a word of warning the road in is just horrendous, unless it is graded. Two hours to do 37 knms, speaks for itself. I will agree, you have a dream and a goal, to persue, with the hope you can put some things that are out of ones capabilities in the hands of, what one would perceive, professionals in their chosen field......how wrong can you be. Yup, it's been an expensive exercise, prior to this, in and out of various mechanical workshops for the last two years, with no real positive conclusion. Actually we were about to walk away from the Val this time, as the caravaning thing was no longer enjoyable. But alas it has come together hopefully. The Val although back in the workshop today for a little tweak, should be back in our possession tomorrow. As the mechanic said it is now a happy motor car, and boy o' boy, she is going like the "clappers" ;D ;D ;D Hopefully all done and dusted, and will bless the man with much gold bullion....Mmmmmmmmmmm! I will keep you guys updated with the end result. The RetroLoiner hopefully will be back also this week, now that's a another saga. That's it for now, as soon as I finally get the Val back, I will let you know. Of course the big test will be, once the Retro Liner is hooked up!!!!!! Just gotta love another challenge. CYA Me

Well here we are again. Have been working on a heart transplant for the WB as you would all know. Yesterday on my walk around about...... text message "engine crane out front" Great .... down and pick it up sweating like the proverbial. Back homeBlock off the bench onto the engine stand..... well that took about 1/2 hour... won't go into it. Head gasket..... no indication on which way around it fits. Text mate.... Finally figure it out Tighten down head as per instructions Start on the rockers in order Almost at the end..... snap!!!! "Oh My" said I...... or words to that effect Out with the grinder and start to grind a flat on the top of the broken bit to remove it with Eaziouts. It's loose ;D ;D ;D ;D Unscrew with fingers. ;D ;D ;D Excellent Can't get another bolt ..... will wait until old engine is out... use one off it. No problems ;D ;D ;D ;D So move onGo to fit oil pick up The bracket had a hairline crack.... that only made it's final gasp ....now. OK Move onRefit Oil pump and other ancillaries 6.30pm Give up till today So here she is up until .....now. Will make another start later today Ahh the joys Cheers Atog

Late start and late finish This was about 3pm today And finished the night by swapping bits from the old to the recon.. Ready for tomorrow Even though it was a ten hour day I enjoyed the change of pace. Cheers Atog

Hey Jim Been a couple of interesting days Saturday I only got to work on the WB for about 4 hours. Got the engine in..... and couldn't mate it up to the Automatic. Not happy Jan So Sunday pulled it out again and also pulled the Auto out Mated them up over a couple of drinks at the local ;D ;D ;D And slipped em back into the engine bay. Started fitting all the bits and pieces back on...... finished at about 7.30 last night. Twelve hour day. But still haven't really finished the job. There are a few minor bits that need to be found or replaced before I can fire it up. Also have never reset a distributor .... so that should be fun. Got to also say ..... I ACHE FROM HEAD TO TOW Smacked my scone on so many bits of steel I didn't know was there. Used muscles in my back and sides that I was sure didn't exist. Still think the Missus has come in during the night and taken to me with a Brisbane phone book. She's not impressed with the state of the garage floor or the greasy old coot that has been rolling around under the car for about three days. So..... more fun to be had today ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Still enjoying the experience...... if the body wasn't quite so aching it would be even better. Cheers Atog

OK Saturday went like this Down to the garage and start on the engine. Have sealed up all holes that needed to be done Hoses all on..... Except one vacuum hose I just can't identify.... Get to it later. How to reset the DistributorNumber one piston at top dead centre Notch on harmonic balancer on 8 degrees (markings on casing on engine block) Turn rotor button on distributor until it is just before number one lead firing. Insert distributor into block. ( gears will mesh and rotor will move until it is close or on firing position )All done. Right Fuel down the carby Spark plugs in. OK Atog now the moment of truth.... will it fire. Words of a mate echoing in ears If you don't get it in the first ten goes your battery will be flat flat flat First firing... no Second firing.... trying but didn't catch Third firing .... still no but maybe too much fuel down the carby Fourth firing..... catch, ignite.... stop Fifth firing..... Vrooooooom ;D ;D ;D You little ripper!!! Rough but engine has jumped to life. Lifters settling down.... great. Turn it off,... instant stop.... hmm tight that's for sure. Fire it up again... Just gotta love that sound.... still rough though. OK Automatic still needs more oil I'll just add some... .... ... Oh.... Perhaps the engine will work better if number six lead is on the spark plug.... let's try that. Vrooom...... smooooooooooth as a baby's butt. ;D ;D ;D Arrrr success. Take it off the ramps and see how it goes.... Hmmm brakes a bit poor ..... OOOOhhhhh now I know were that other vacuum hose goes.... the brake booster. ;D ;D ;D ;D So now the engine runs but the temperature is saying it is toooo hot .... real quick..... (Finally found out this morning that the sender is faulty. Dead cold engine and the gauge reads boiling ) So she is a goeer Just have one other issue ..... Blowing smoke at times... Think I may not have done the valve stem seals properly. Oh well - a job for another weekend. Rest of today is clean up the garage floor. SWMBO isn't really impressed with the mess Any ideas on a cheap grease/oil remover from concrete? Cheers Atog

Howdy Atog, Who's been a busy Boy then ? ;D I wouldn't worry about the motor blowing a bit of smoke, It's bound to, if you have fitted new rings with-out a re-bore or a hone out. Drive it carefully with a bit of top oil added to the fuel and it should be fine in a few weeks. So, whats the next project, trying to fit a V8 onto a wheel chair ;D ;D ;D cheers kiwijim .

Good stuff Atog.
You'll know if it's burning oil caused by stem seals. Turn the engine off for 1/2 an hour start it up and it will blow smoke out as it starts. As Jim said rings will need to bed in. Best way is to put it under load. Find a few nice hills to climb, don't rev the crap out of her, just load her up a bit in a higher gear and make the engine work a bit.
Check out the Penrite website, they used to make a special oil designed for running in engines, they also make oils designed for early Holden and Ford engines.
I have a real softspot for old Holden 6's.
