Well here she is ....... warts and all My latest acquisition a WB panelvan Here's how it went Saturday's paper three weekends ago For sale WB Panelvan good condition ph xxxxxxx Hmmm ME: Might have a look at that Wife: (rolls eyes ) {D@mn he's off tyre kicking again} That's nice dear Phone the bloke (young sounding fellow) get address jump in car and off Look at van ..... hmm not bad what will you take for it? Errrr Ummmm $400 Less than ad in paper (Hmmm this could have potential .....he's up for bargaining) Me: OK I'll come back with a mate to check it out safternoon Off to a mates place explain what is happening Back in the afternoon Next to no words spoken..... Looks and sounds ok Look up under the dash for rust in vents..... see none .... good sign ...... Small amount of rust behind the windscreen on both sides... ?? weird place for that... but still not a real issue Me: OK Mate will be back Monday Back in the car Well what do you think My mate: If you don't buy it I will ..... They are hard to get and it is worth every cent Monday comes Me: I'll offer you $1000 less than in paper Him: Naaa it cost me more than that ......... ......... Well thanks anyway here's my number if you are interested I've got the cash on me....... ....... ........ ...... ...... ...... ..... .... ..... How about $800 less than ad? ...... ......... ............ .......... ................ Yeah OK SOLD Used it for a couple of days..... washed the windscreen.... water on the floor Where the h*ll did that come from? Up under the dash..... nothing OK but weird Weekend comes Pull the lower dash out along with the vents and associated plastic bits and pieces Drains blocked to the hilt Clean these out and refit OK into the car upside down, feet on seat back, head jammed up under the dash for a look Guess what..... both sides missing about three inches of metal Rusted out behind the windscreen and just in front Is that all....... fhhwww sigh of relief Yep that is an easy fix Just a lot of time preping it up Next weekendOut to the local ships paint supplier and buy POR 15 Remove all the loose rust Start the preparation 1 Marine clean (removes any dirt or grease) 2 Metal ready brushed on (preps the metal for next step) 3 Rust prevention paint grey ( does as the name suggests) 4 Final coat with POR 15 Chassis black (Yet to be done) This will have the sections ready for ...... fibreglassing Yes gents it seems a bit ordinary to glass up instead of steel but..... Will never rust again and until I decide to remove the front end and all the associated bits it will do the job Mate of mine has done this (fibreglassed) to a few cars and it never really has any further problems So this week is fibreglassing week Oh and by the way...... now am looking for a new job...... Last week no work The owner has bolted to China and his son the manager...... isn't managing real well At least it was 5 months more work than I had before The hunt begins Cheers Atog

atog, what a shrewd negotiator you are!! ;D ;D This would have to be right up there with some BBQ bargains I read about somewhere recently!! And doesn't the WB just look the goods with the Olympic?! Made for each other I reckon. ;D ;D You won't have time to go looking for any work now, ol' mate...be too busy rollin' around the highway! cheers, Al.

G'day Atog, I read a little while back about you doing some fibreglassing on the new toy, I think as far as I could make out, it's work under the dash ? would be interesting to see some pic's of this, not of the skinned knuckles, I mean the repairs. Doesn't it give you a good feeling when you can manage to keep some of the hard earned Dino, in your pocket after a purchase ;D ;D ;D I reckon it's sort of like finding a good sized receipt you can claim for at tax time. "Hey Youngin's" .......don't mess with your Senior's, Experience will beat excitement every time. ;D ;D

Gidday Guys I thought there would have been a cry of foul regarding the repairs to the WB Being a non metal alternative Not so it seems Sooooo First of all I used these to get the metal to a stage were it would no longer rust The reason for the glad wrap on the lids is ..... If it was metal to metal ... the tins would never be able to be opened again Here is a shot of each side after the first coat of POR 15 treatment There is a second coat needed before moving on to the fibreglass What is needed to get to the area Roughed up the area in prep for the glass Am currently waiting for the fibreglass resin to go off Drivers side Used minimum thickness fibreglass I had 225g/m This is so the fibreglass conforms to the shape needed And just enough resin to wet it out properly In total used less than 100gms of resin Will put another couple of thin layers of glass over this after the first lot goes off Then use the POR 15 chassis cote to cover it all and exclude any light If you do any fibreglassing like this you really need to use gloves as it is very messy work. UPDATESo here is one side only when blacked out Bit hard to see anything so only the one photo Gave it the water test and ....... ;D ;D ;D ;D No more leaks ;D ;D ;D ;D yeah !!!!!!!!!! Cheers Atog

F I B R E G L A S S …. Wot the ….. how dare you use that stuff on panel work in a motor car… absolute sacrilege………………… FOWL - - FOWL - - FOWL ;D ;D Hey atog Sounds like you struck a good bargain there… well done The ol… blocked drains…. Sure can be a problem. Never owned an [classic] older car that did not have that problem. Had one where I drilled holes in the floor so I could have a flow thru. Pulling the dash board out was going to be an absolute nightmare and there was no way I could get underneath like you have. It was a VL. Solved the problem…………… sold it….. ;D I note with interest the angle you achieved climbing under the dash… ;D It is real easy getting under there…….. but bloody hard getting back out again. Be very grateful it is a Holden and not an MG or some other small car……………. .My Father dear father pretending he knew what he was doing.......... we could never got under there with the seat in place ;D By the way… That repair will probably out last the car…………………… [glow=red,2,300] Just love those legs[/glow]

, G'day atog, That photo of you under the dash of the WB with your feet up over the back of the seat reminds me of a certain job we elecos had to do on the Mirage fighters; changing the inverters. There were two motor-generator type inverters to supply AC current to the instuments. They were inside the centre console between the pilot's feet. There was a panel either side of the console that had to be removed and the forward most two dzus fasteners on either side of this panel were positioned such that you had to assume just that position to get a stubby common screwdriver onto them, upside down in the narrow cockpit, backside on the foward edge of the ejection seat and the legs over the top of the seat's headbox and you had to have arms of a certain length just to reach that forward most fastener. I was unfortunate enough to be just able to reach it so I was put onto the inverter change qualified personnel. Then you had to assume a normal upright position to remove the inverter to be changed and then put the new one in place and secure it. You then put the panel back in place and secured all the dzus fasteners you could from a normal sitting position and it was then back upside down with your feet on the headbox again to get those last 4 dzus fasteners. It was a cow of a job and could take an hour if things didn't go just right. I've done one in about twent ifve minutes and then it has taken me an hour on occasions to do the same job when things weren't going right, such as hot day, fatigue, etc. Cheers, Ross.

Hey Bob "Just love those legs" So does the Missus ...... specially when they are carrying me out the door ;D ;D ;D ;D "And stay out" ;D ;D ;D ;D Hey Ross Mate it sounds like a job for someone else ....... or an apprentice ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Place I worked at a while ago had an air-handler unit that needed greasing once a year The grease nipples are in a very awkward spot inside the unit Ol fellow tried to get into do the greasing...... Got stuck Had to partially dismantle the unit to get him out When it was put back together they had the opportunity to run grease lines to a convenient place on the outside of the unit ...... You guessed it no one was willing to pay for the extra work So it went back as was Some people just don't learn Needless to say that unit doesn't get greased - so when it fails..... Cheers Atog

:)Hm. Another funny story atog. We had an interesting short ciricuit in a Mirage once. It was intermittant (the worst kind of fault) and could not be reproduced on the ground as it only ever occurred when more than +5.5g was being pulled. We scratched our heads for a week or so and did what fault finding we could but still couldn't isolate the problem. Now in the Mirage there is a 13 gallon fuel tank behind the cockpit and below the avionics bay called the Inverted Flight Accumulator that allows the aircraft about 10 seconds inverted flight. I suggested that the IFA be pulled and we have a gander at the wiring below it. It was an Airframes job to pull the IFA and they we not keen on the idea, bugger of a job. Eventually we convinced them to pull it and when they got it out it was about 8 pm one cold wet winter's night and I happened to be on late shift and as it was my suggestion in the first place to pull this thing I wore the job of going headfirst down the hole and checking all the wiring down there out.
Picture this if you can; here's me climbing upside down into a hole little more than 14 or 15" round (I had to shed my warm clothing to do it) but about 3'6" deep. I'm more than 15 or 16" around believe me. Well I found the spot where the loom was chaffing against the airframe then it was time to come out. Ha, ha, great joke. I couldn't get my arms up past my waste to push myself out, so there I was stuck upside down in the hole. Only one thing to do; start yelling for help. 45 minutes I yelled until I was hoarse. After this time the other eleco on shift with me came through the hangar on his way to the bathroom. As I couldn't yell anymore the only way I could attract his attention was wave my legs in the air even though I couldn't see who it was, I just heard the door open then close. Of course he went and told the rest of the shift about this and pretty soon I had the whole shift standing beside the aircraft absolutely cacking themselves. Fortunately a couple of them took pity on me and jumped up onto the aircraft and grabbed me around the knees and gave me a good reef which freed me from the hole. I told the boss next day he could find soemone else to fix the problem, I wasn't going back in there, no way. Fortunately the job was assessed as being to much for an operational squadron to handle and so was palmed off onto the maintenance squadron. It turned out to be several hundred manhours, that whole loom had to be replaced.
cheers, Ross.

Did a little bit on the WB this weekend There is rust starting in various places and one place is the line from door to tailgate So out with the wire brush on a grinder and into it I expected the worst as it was bubbly and looked like someone had had a go previously Well after about twenty minutes of careful cleaning up of both sides ..... one small hole Treated with Marine clean, Metal ready and then two coats of Rust preventative paint.... ready for a top coat of chosen white Will bog the rust hole today in prep for the top coat Cheers Atog

[glow=red,2,300] aaaaaaahhh the beginning[/glow] of the replacement program How long will it take to do the rest??? ;D Living in the tropics must generate some rust problems.. but then if you convert to fiberglass it should last a life time very nice bit of work there atog... I like the way your thinking.

Thanks Bobt Well here is how I spent most of today Up before daybreak and after posting a couple of bits on the CC site off up to ........ Watsonville Watsonville...... where in the .... is that? Well you drive up the Gillies Range ... known for having more curves and bends per Klm than any other range in the area Through Atherton on to Herberton... and then another ten k's later ............ Watsonville This is looking across the main street Guess what is on one side of the main street... This bloke with about six or more vans in his yard Obviously he likes his privacy and getting a photo of the vans wasn't easy except for one Then it was on past this creek..... not much rain out here You could almost here the banjo playing in the background Down a couple of dirt roads "don't go through the gate keep turning left" Dry bit of country at the moment Met the owner of a premier stationwagon that had seen better days "Mate I'll take the shovel with us.... bin afew tiapans around lately.... wouldn't want to run into any today" Uncovered the premier and he very carefully checked the inside for joe blakes..... "Na .... she's right mate... Watda ya need?" But..... it did still have the full dash and air con still in it ..... Until I got to it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D By the time I had finished the back of my van looked like this Yes the photo was taken back at home He wouldn't take anything for the bits and kept asking if I needed anything else Nice bloke - Salt of the earth type - just getting by- but happy doing so. So ended up with a few other bits for the WB as well as a new friend "Come back anytime mate - just give us a call before ya do .... might be out down the dam puttin' in the red claw pots or canoeing with the kids" Back on the road and stopped for lunch under the trees of the car park in Atherton's old china town Now a tourist site.... not much left except the joss house and markers where the houses use to be Interesting history if you ever get up there Then off to Yungaburra for a cuppa with a mate of mine for an hour or so Back down the Gillies Range and home by 3.30pm Yep ..... a nice days drive ;D ;D ;D ;D Not real sure just how quick I'll get the air con in though.... The whole dash has to come out and there is a lot of wiring that was cut before I got there In the too hard basket for the moment Perhaps later in the year At least I have the bits to work with Cheers Atog

See.....I'm not the only one who can find a bargain ;D ;D ;D
Did ya grab those couple of spotties sitting on the roof of the wreck ? ? ?

Hey Gents
Sadly the power steering was long gone Must have misunderstood what was still on the ol girl
The spotties are still there.... as it was I ended up with the premier headlight surrounds, 4 coil springs (both of which went to the bloke that put me onto the wreck) The tail lights, interior map reading light, intermittent wiper control, upper dash, head light control and chrome fuel filler splash guard
Was offered but declined the bumper bars, sway bars, chrome door handles and the little chrome protectors under the door handles, chrome side strips over the sills on the outside, the brake vacuum booster and anything else I needed except the diff. Like I say the bloke is salt of the earth type and while I needed some bits it would have been excessive to just take. If I need any of the other bits the offer is there to come back and collect them He just likes to see old Holdens kept on the road He has an LC Torana as his project .....but it looks like one that will take a long time to finish The fellow is not in great health and motivation seems to be a bit of a problem.
Part of the reason I love this site You blokes give me a swift kick up the coit if I stop posting progress reports ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers Atog

So this little project has cost me next to nothing in materials More to come The upper tailgate is still at a mates place He's doing the painting as a favour .... So can't rush these things Hope it is ready next week Cheers Atog

All very nice there atog, but WHERE'S THE POLISHED ROSEWOOD??!! Bowen?...gees you don't half go around the world looking for work, do ya? Is the WB fit-out for possible short term sleeping, or for something else? Could this trip to Bowen be a bit of a goer for the Olympic?? C'mon atog, spill the beans... cheers, Al.

The trim will be added later and yes ......... it will be rosewood ;D ;D ;D ;D Why you ask? Cause I have it sitting on the shelf Better in the van than on the shed wall Bowen isn't a certainty yet Should know in a day or two It will be mango picking for about two months and possibly pruning for a further six weeks if I'm a good worker As for taking the Olympic Does this give you a clue ...... or two ;D ;D ;D ;D She's ready to go ...... Almost Always something else to do Will take her down as a nice place to escape Still will sleep in the panelvan It is roomier as a bed The storage under the bed will hold various tools from my trade on the left and woodworking/general tools on the right Getting excited now Just have to find a job so I can use both vans Cheers Atog
