Hi
We own a little Viscount Nipper and went for a trip just for the weekend. We found a great free camp area near Sofala, NSW and there was no one else around. Peace and quiet. Settled down for a cuppa and another caravan pulled up right beside us. We thought they were just stopping and asking about the area, etc. They started to unload, pull out their awning and their feet of their awning was almost touching the side of our caravan. They were that close. There was plenty of area, up and down the site but they parked right there. I went out and asked if everything was ok. They did not even said hi. Just set up and sat in their chairs under their awning and just stared at me. Did I park in their spot or something? My missus started to play her music, KISS, loud. We dont mind people camping beside us but at lease say hi. About an hour of the music, they packed up and moved down to the other side of the area. We knew they spoke English as they were swearing when packing away. Later on that afternoon, another couple stopped and had a chat and asked if they could set up next to us with enough room for a couple of caravans between us. All good with us. Spent the weekend with new friends.
Has anyone else have a story like this one?
Cheers.

Maybe they lived in a home-unit is Sydney and just needed to be very close as there are all sorts of nasty beasties out in the bush that will get get between the caravans and do all sorts of wicked evil things to city people. Country people are aware of the drop bears and what they can do if there is too much space? Just a thought....

Yes, have had this happen before - was camping in my 101 (forward control ex military Land Rover) in a nice large open area, awning out, relaxing reading a book - up drove a camper van right next to me - almost took out my awning, then started unpacking. It was a drizzly day so they came under my awning - all without even saying hello - to get out of the rain and started cooking their tea.
I went for a walk, came back, then jumped in the cab and started the engine - the exhaust of a 40 year old V8 beltched its smog right into their open camper door. Ran the engine for an hour and when they complained I just said ‘I need to keep the batteries charged’ - which was a lie, but stuff all they could do. They didn’t move, but I got them a second time as I hit the road early the next morning - about 3am, and started and ran the engine at high idle next to their camper for 15 minutes before I drove off - I could see them poking their noses through the curtains so it had the desired effect. 😇
No idea why people do this though...

You hear of this behavior often. When free camping best to hide away a bit, but on the positive side most free campers are prepared to give you space & enjoy a campfire, we have met some interesting characters free camping.

We have been camping and caravanning for the past 40 odd years and have been lucky until today. We are in a caravan park and parked forward in a drive through site. Another van just backed in and is so close that he can't walk between his van and the power/water pole. He has to come our side to connect up. There is about 1 metre between our vans, and about 5 on the other side of his. Luckily we will be gone in the morning.
