So, I think I'll be going with mastic when redoing the windows - I used PU on the Franklin and it works great but maybe I'll be keeping the Viscount longer term so want to hedge my bets in case I ever need to remove them again:
What have others used and where did you get it? I had a look in Bunnings but couldn't find any and the shop assistants there had no idea what I was talking about.
Any info greatly appreciated as I'll be starting on the back window soon.
TIA.

G'day snoops,
Bunnings sell Selleys Butyl Mastic, but price for 1 cartridge is $25.95, which is ridiculous when a full caravan resto can easily use 30 cartridges. Alternative is Bostik Z Bond Ezy Caulk for $7.65 from CaravansPlus, which is much more reasonable. Check the internet and see if other on-line caravan parts suppliers are cheaper for either of these brands.
cheers,Al.

Thanks - I wouldn't be keen to use any Selleys product to be honest as if it's anything to go by, their PU and Silicones are terrible. I've only ever used Admil sealants but my supplier doesn't have anything suitable if I want something that doesn't fully cure.
Will check out the Bostik stuff. 👍

Hi Snoops, When I re-built our Viscount I made the boast that any part of the van can be easily un-assembled in case of accident or windows needing repair. I only used Mastic mostly ribbon but also liquid form for tidying up. In 3x years we have been in some terrible Queensland downpours with no signs of leaking.
When I removed the windows from the Walden, all had been in originally & the mastic just fell off (51 years). All will be re-sealed with Mastic, but like you Selleys is not the name it once was.

I used the window putty from vintage caravan spares (aka caulking tape from caravans plus), easy to work with and a lot less messy. When the window was almost all the way on, I ran a thin bead of solarflex (or sikaflex whatever you prefer) just under the lip, finished off and cleaned up. Masking tape around the window helped get a nice clean line. The extra sealant is just to protect the tape from the elements as it stays soft. Masking tape I tried Ezy Caulk around a hatch on my first Viscount about 3 yrs ago and it stayed too soft and attracted every bit of dirt around, I couldn't clean it off so no way I was using it around windows as well. I ended up removing the hatch, cleaning the ezycaulk off it and using Selleys roof and gutter on it with the foam tape instead.

Dirt is the only downfall with Mastic, I probably did ours the wrong way around windows first then painted the van, so the edge paint protected the Mastic edges. Surprisingly the paint has stuck well to the Mastic.
A good idea from twocutekelpies to seal the edge of the Mastic, with an impervious sealant.
Our Viscount has the log cabin cladding which left plenty of hoops & hollows, the ribbon mastic was my best bet to seal & get a clean edge. When I re-fit the Walden windows again after painting ,with its smooth surface very little sealant (by comparison to the Viscount) will be needed so the dirt line will be reduced significantly.
PS: When we took our Roadstar to Birdsville this year there is still a red line around all sealant areas, we are going around with tooth brushes to gradually get rid of it, so I think there will always be a dust line of sorts on sealants.
