Very quiet isn't it! I just have a few things to do on my ex Military 101 and then I'm back on the van - I want to get it painted and pretty this Summer.

Hi, I’m new to this forum. Two things: what is Ex Military 101 and, I’m hopefully going to go look at a Viscount Ambassador 16’ mid 1970s caravan this weekend. We have never owned a caravan before and I have limited idea of what to look for. My main aim is not to buy a lemon as my husband is already not keen on this idea (he is having trouble seeing past “old”).

This one is my pride and joy and I tow my Viscount around with it at times which makes a great show. 1D922AB1-5656-420B-8CC9-2F73DACC2A19 by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr As for the van, if your Husband isn't keen, then finding a going concern that is ready to use is a must in my opinion. If you can find something like this, then even if it needs some cosmetic work and a few changes to suit yourselves, you'll be a lot better off. This will take out anything that is advertised as a 'project' or has been sitting around unused for a long time. What sort of budget do you have?

I’d like to spend no more than $8,000-$10,000. I’m happy to do this in bits (project), starting with something usable and cheap but adding aircon and electric breaks straight away, then everything else as we go. Or find something with everything now.
Ideal van: any age, bunk beds and double plus separate eating/table area that can be made into a bed. Preferably 16’-ish.

That’s where I was going to mate - Bec, Vincent (see the link Mustang posted) is a superstar of the Classic Caravan world - litterally nothing to do but enjoy it. Whoever snags that van will be a very lucky person. 👍

Hi Mustang and Snoops
The Viscount looked fantastic, but unfortunately not the right layout for our family of 5.
Tomorrow however I pick up a 1977 York 19’ caravan (although it may be a 1975 based on its chassis number) with room for a standard double (currently caravan double), bunks (where the top one folds away) and a separate dining area which can seat five but also turn into a double. (My husband hasn’t seen it yet).
Not yet set up for off grid. Also considering a portable aircon (would love a roof mounted one but I’ll ask for advice on that). And I am sure I will have a lot of additional questions for the forum.
P.S. Love your Military 101. I would have liked to build a motor home on the back of a unimog if I’d had my way.
