I’m participating in an interesting thread on another forum at the moment about what the legalities are regarding taking a modified vehicle (that is legal in its home state) into another state where the same rules do not apply - which would make it illegal there, but no one is really sure if you’d get booked for that or not, but I had another thought that is more pertinent here.
That is, am I breaking the law by towing my safe, legal and registered caravan that has no gas certificate (it’s not a requirement of caravan rego in Vic) into - say - NSW, where one is required?
Doubt you’d ever get booked but it got me wondering...
Anyone know and can point to any references about this? 😊

Hey Snoops
If your vehicle, trailer is legal and registered (including on historic or street rod permit scheme) in your home state and you visit another state you will not have a legal problem.
NSW have a requirement for caravans with a brake away system to have a battery monitor fitted to the vehicle, there is no requirement for the monitor in other states.
I shall go hunting and see if I can find the references you are looking for...

Thanks for that - that seems like the most sensible approach, but there were views to the contrary on this regarding vehicles on the other forum which made me question the whole state based law thing. I'm sure we'd be better off with a national set of rules but that will never happen while I'm alive. 😁

When we sold our Nautilus, (2000 GVM) it had no breakaway, re-registered in Vic without inspection (apparently)

In Vic, they only check lights, VIN and overall length when registering a trailer of any description up to 4.5 tonnes so yes, you could easily have a non functioning breakaway system and breeze through rego here.

Hey snoops
I haven't found the reference. Its around here somewhere, it only applies to what Vic does but my understanding is the other states do similar.
Last year I changed the rego on my new box from Qld to Vic. They took a tape measure to it, looked at the compliance plate. They didn't check the lights or the fail safe brakes.

Breakaway systems have to be connected to the tow vehicle to charge. It is possible to connect the Breakaway systems battery to a battery charger.
