A chance has come up where i can live cheaply in Hobart, my question is is it worth dragging the Arrow down there ( would i get the ferry cost back) or just sell it on the mainland? Ta in advance.

Good move to come to paradise. The market here is very small to sell vans and can take some time so sell it. I have to sell my Arrow for $8000 after 6 months in the market. Have to look Gumtree to have an idea. Why selling it? This is one of the best places in Australia for free camping and all at 2 or 3 hours from home. All the best

Murray, winter can be long but very enjoyable with provisions of Tasmanian wine, single malt and cheeses

Depends on how much work you put into the van as opposed to buying another 'project' down here to do up. My Viscount 20ft cost me $700 (or under I think) for the trip, BUT the issue wasnt the cost, it was availability. If you are looking to come down over the next few months (peak season) then I can almost say it would be impossible to find a booking and the only option is to put your name on a waiting list which is what I did in WINTER months!
So depending on your time frame, your choice to bring the van or leave it will depend on boat availability.

Thanks for the feedback, as you may know i live full time in my cara & with poor health can not do all the long term things the Arrow requires, let alone the $$ to pay for it. I will have a home without wheels in Hobart, first time in almost 4 years haha! It would be after X Mas, as this year is an all in year with the kids, was supposed to be but oldest is off the Ireland for his wifes family bash, but the rest all here . My mate has scored a job doing timber boats with a heritage company, and starts in a few weeks. So if mate crashes and burns then i will not get marooned long way from home by going in the New Year. I still need to cull a storage unit i can not affoard anymore regardless of where i end up. If i take the transit i can travel & live in that to explore Tassie, diesel cost dependant. My oldest internet friends are all there so deffo a bucket list to not only visit Tasmania but also catch up with Strahn & Launceston folks. Hitching & couch surfing may be an option if ferry availability & cost to travel is too expensive there.

atefooterz, I was going to suggest you to get a large van and you have it, so IMHO sell the Arrow and if you can use some money from it install a diesel heater in the Transit and you will be set to live on it when you touring or permanently if you have to vacant the house. I sold my Arrow because my hands do not have anymore the strength to hook it, leveling, etc and things are getting worse. My solution was to get a Hiace Commuter van and we are happy with it even if our preference was a large high roof LWB van. We need a diesel heater on it.

G'day ate, if you don't normally read the posts on the Vintage forum, you might like to read about one of the members there who relocated from Camden (SW of Sydney) to Queenstown back in early 2016. Might be a useful bit of bedtime reading for you... Moving to TassieNew homeI've visited Tassie twice, and would happily go back there anytime without hesitation. My oldest brother (71) is nearing the end of a 1-year stay there, in his caravan with his wife, travelling around to all parts. They had originally intended to go for only 3 months, but liked the experience so much they decided to extend their time there, and experience all four seasons. And yes, they have a diesel heater in their van, so perhaps that item is a 'must' for newbies from the mainland. I say "go for it"!! cheers, Al.

Thanks Al, the reality of rent free in a house, not tramping around rest stops etc makes it a no brainer. The only real question is to delay to sell cars/ caravan before. I do not think folks will pay the extra for fuel to get to Vic then ferry cost, so a waste of time. If i can do some travel then the coin toss of paying for travel to Vic & ferry for transit, my budget & health is not up to sight seeing, travelling exploring the place, so no need for diesel heaters lol.

Having lived in Tassy for 40 years, it would only be a new insulated/heated van that I could live in. The fact that you have a rent free house & city standard medical available in Hobart I would ditch the van/truck & storage unit & make a fresh start. Good Luck

As pondered the Tassie situation has changed, if in better health & more organised i could have scored a month or so, ol mate has quit and is now pondering his next move. So it seems finding somewhere cheap in regional NSW or elsewhere is the mission now. Ahh life adventures and surprizes haha!

Why not consider "House Sitting", especially small properties, where they might have some livestock/pets that just needs monitoring?

I did look into that when you suggested it before, main issue is being energetic enough & the random placement, i can go a week at a time when having a shower is a major effort, so with the longish lead in times could not guarantee i was up to travel & sit so not want to let folks down. Will sort something out as i am sure it will. Edit: The house sitting link auto created in your post has this gem for under $20!
