Hi, I have just started a reasonably long process of renovating a very original 1978 Viscount. I intend to concentrate on keeping the retro look but using modern materials and decor for the interior. I have stripped out the inside doors, including fridge, range hood, curtains and will replace the floor covering in time. My first issue is the removal of what is left of the original decals. If anyone can help I would be grateful. They are almost entirely faded, cracked and unreadable. I will continue to update my progress.

Hi lgt Welcome to our Classic Caravans forum. The forum fosters vans from 1970 to 1980, & we welcome all comers interested in Classics. You are welcome to start your own thread in the “Hall of Fame”, there you can post images from a third party such as Flickr etc. There are tutorials at the top of the General Section. Our sister forum Vintage Vans (1970 & earlier) have many duel members looking in, so ask any info about your project. Cheers Brent (Forum Mod) See this reno link for info, there are many others but you will find Photobucket a hosting firm has retracted many images, members are in the process of rebuilding their sites.

Hi Brent, Thank you for the welcome. I intend to use this thread as a continuing account of my full restoration project for my 1978 Viscount. I intend to start posting pictures and some detail of how the result was achieved. It may be of help to those considering such a project. Cheers, LGT Gold Coast.

For removal of your decals, try a heatgun on low setting and/or a caramel wheel from an auto paint store, make sure you keep it moving so it doesn't warp the aluminium cladding. Here's a youtube vid of one being used, aka toffee wheel www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF0_p78zqsQ

Thank you True blue for your suggestion. The heat gun failed, because I think the decal is so far gone that there is very little to remove. I have ordered the exact decal and will lightly sand what is left flat and place the new decal exactly over the old.
