I was left unattended on the weekend and decided to build a folding/collapsible fire place to carry in the van (and horse float) when we stay in rec reserves etc. where a fire can't be lit on the ground. I had borrowed one a few weeks ago to go to a horse event, and found it great. The borrowed version was built by a bloke that worked in metal fab, he had access to folders and either laser, plasma or waterjet cutting, and was a work of art. I simplified the design so that I could use tools (and skills) available in my shed, grinder, drill, arc welder & file. Made from 3mm plate it pulls apart and stacks flat, about 50mm thick (without frypan).

Hey Planner
Nice one. A friend of mine has something very similar that he bought from the Caravan and Camping show last year. It did not have the fry pan holder. I will have to tell him about yours.

I can see a business starting here, very neat. Not at the pace I work, I'd have to charge $500 to cover labour costs. For those that are not as handy Mustang, the basic pit cost me $70 and about 0.5hour. I got a local metal shop to cut the rectangular plates, $70 but I reckon if I shopped around I could halve that. Then 8 cuts with a 9inch grinder and about 5 mins of filing to tidy the rough edges. Then I added some bracing to avoid warping/flexing, then some "feet" for soft ground, then the frypan post, then the rack for billy, then some hangers for billy/campoven then it got dark so I opened a beer . The additions took a good part of Sunday, but would not be essential for all people. If anyone's keen I can mark up some sketches for the basic components. Planner

I've been looking at the Ozspit for a while now and other swinging BBQ plates, but none of them have been over a "contained" fire. I should get to try it this weekend. I'm going shooting for 3 days and camping at a Rec Reserve.

And some hunting pics as well. Clay targets this weekend Mustang, but I do spend many weekends hunting.

Enjoy your weekend. Do report back. Pic of the spit (with duck) on Sunday arvo. Then on Sunday night when everyone was a little more "relaxed". A couple of modifications to be done this week, ready for SWMBO to use this weekend, but generally really happy with the end result.

Best spit roast I ever tasted was a rotisserie chicken. Think I will look for one of those battery powered little jobbies. Did you win the clay target comp?

The spit motor & bar belong to a mate I camp with always, we normally run it over an open fire (on ground). I think I'll have to buy my own now. Did you win the clay target comp? Not even close, 3 days nights of "festivities" probably didn't help The winners probably weren't still socialising into the wee small hours. Our camp didn't have many wins, but we sure had a good time.

There is nothing better than a weekend away with friends.
Clealy the fire pit is a winner.
