Brendan
Your tare weight is you caravans empty weight. Your load carrying capacity is dependant on your tyres load capacity, suspension and axle ratings. A rule of thumb used by many currant manufacturers is a load carryong capacity of 300kg for single axle vans and 4p0kg for tandems, my belief is that this has been in place since the 80's. Perhaps Hughdeani or someone else may be able to provide some more information.

Agree with Bob if you have 1600kg as dry weight then you can go to about 1900KG. If your van is a single axle this would be risky without 6 stud wheels & suitable 4wd bearings & tyres. However if yours is a tandem & you are thinking more weight, then you can have an engineer supply a certificate if the chassis etc is up to a larger capacity. I paid $280 for an engineers report.
