Paying above asking is not new.
When I was renting in Fortitude Valley (2003) the only way I could get a property at the time was to offer "key" money, it worked.
At the time rent was $300pw. A chance conversation with my bank manager got us financed into a new unit for $350.00pw.

A chance conversation with my bank manager got us financed into a new unit for $350.00pw. Banking regulations change, 6 years earlier in the virtual credit squeeze, you could not do that. Currently in popular areas where over supply of units seen prices drop by 25% over 10 months means a lot of sighs of relief from Bank Managers who said no head office will not allow that loan. These properties rent for $600- $800 per week with a loan for that ($1.2 mill approx) will vary from $6500- $8000 per month so while a saving the 25-30% deposit or security required for that loan an issue for many. |

IMHO paying $550 rent per month for a walk in robe and be able to put the matters on the floor it is just what we cannot expect on a country like Canada.

The units opposite where i was share accom are mostly 1-2 bedroom 650-800 sq ft jobs & get snapped up at $570- $630 per week rent! This is 40 mins bus away from the CBD & 20 mins bus to Parramatta. |

Villas 80 square meters + garage 14 km form Hobart CBD (15 minutes drive rent for $320 per week. Give me Hobart any time before west or south west of Sydney.

I can live in Indonesia for a year for $320! Upsiding the downside of Sydney is kids & rellies handy with birthdays & xmas looming, the real upside and why i am back, is the cost to transport all i need to do my build up to QLD, not even thinking about delays, will cover the rent here for a bit.. until the free camper is ready to roll.  |
