Have you ever felt like one in a mob of sheep ? Well that's the way I felt yesterday, I had to go into Kmart , only wanted a small roll of sealing tape $3.00 in total, No worries, found it o.k. then headed for the check-out, "What the hell's going on here" not one single till open, all roped off and the only thing open was those darn self serve machines. That's when I started to feel like a sheep going through a wash trough, first thing I noticed was that there was a queue of people waiting to get through the narrow entrance, once into the pen, I then had a job finding a machine that would take my "$3.00 CASH" most of the gadgets only took credit cards,!!!! At one point I felt like leaving my small purchase on the counter and just walking off, There was one middle aged hen racing around like a sheep dog, trying to get people through the trough, "ER" dip "ER" holding pen, What's happened to good old check out service, and Where have all the "Good looking Chicks" gone , ? I can tell you, It will be a long time before I head into that Shearing Shed again,

We absolutely refuse to use them. If no checkouts are manned we leave the basket there and tell 'the sheepdog' we'll be back if and when they get more staff. Its not like they pay them a lot and most are under 18. Pete

Local supermarket has just changed all their checkouts they too now have self help registers. You have to wonder how much walks out the door.

The last 3 years have been facinating watching these roll out. The main reason they are now expanding are those who spend life with nose to phone. More interesting is socio groups, example a posh area in Sydney that was a trial store now has less folks using self serve forcing the supervising shoplifting deterrent person to start offering to check out your goods, this store now has 2-3 more operators on in peak times than two years ago! In western Sydney in a mostly migrant area i was lucky that the day they fitted them was also a time that our leaders were mooting $100k uni fees. This store was full and only one very slow manual operator on tills and two minders trying to herd. I started a great riot with a huge band of cash strapped Mums outraged that what little income thier kids were getting from the store would be axed and if we did not get a discount for self serve then what was the point? most now were cued up on the one checkout and a sweaty store manager and another came out and started playing check out chix to clear the mob. 18 months later this store still only has 8 self serve bays and most registers still manned ( luckily) Mob rule or sheeple stupidity the choice can only be made with actions. In QLD the Nambour Woolies is a classic where a few snotty "just teens" hassle รถld folks" who are too stupid to use the self serve! loveit While no jobs have been lost most at that store now get 2-3 shifts a week rather than the 5-7 or more, to cope with no shows, that irritated them prior.

I've never used an electronic register. Everytime I'm guided to one I say "The day I use one of them I'm giving myself a 50% discount for the labor involved"........... Talk about getting weird looks.
My brother loves them. Don't ring up carrots more than 3times though. I tell you, they'll tear those things out in a few years after they work out the stock is just walking out the door. Everyone just buys carrots and brushed pototoes ... They must sell a million tons of carrots year (even though they only buy 1/2 ton of them). Discounts ... 50% reduced. Yay, grab the discounted item and the 10 items behind it. Scan the discount label 10 times and get all 10 discounted.
The westies work at the stores, so have guided all there mates on how to get around the registers checks and balances. stock is just rushing out the door at a hell of a rate. I can't understand it.
Bunnings ?? Join all of your pipe fittings together, nuts and bolts ... etc... scan just one barcode. You just walked out with $50 of fittings an only scanned the one $2.50 connector.
Is the management implementing these registers really so stupid ?

Shane the bean counters, who recommend these things, love it. Wages (evil stupid expensive thing in corporate Aus)the ledger can show less payroll & super, sick pay provisions etc. So a win for that collumn, we can go public, via free main stream media with outrage about how prices need to increase because of the theft epidemic, note stats all being in separate collumns means more cash, paid from a different collumn , will be now spent on security consultants,to make recommendations, so the board can report some gains or at least progress next fiscal!

Another who point blank refuses to use them. Have wasted so much time when they stuff up, I am pretty quick in telling the helpful staff member trying to shove it down my throat that hell will freeze over first.

I was in bricks & mortar retail for 41 years, while we were conscious of theft (4%+) we found that most retail business's either shoved their heads under the blankets or were not prepared to meet it head on. Now we run a home based retail business, it is nice to go to the stock & it is there!!!
These big box retailers must have huge margins to afford the losses that are occurring.
