Update: Well I decided to get the van registered...finally. What an exercise. Because I didn't have the old rego papers and it wasn't last registered in Qld, it caused a few headaches. Firstly, I disconnected the gas. Went and got the 'Road Worthy' and passed. They realised that because there wasn't gas I didn't need a Gas Cert. Went to Main Roads and guess what I needed a Gas Cert to say there isn't any gas connected, even though there arn't and gas bottles or gas pipes or gas fridge or stove or oven. lol No matter, the person from Main Roads was extremely helpful. I got a gas certy to come around and had the paper which says there is no gas connected. lol bureaucracies.... Then the fun started. Whats the Tare and ATM I was asked? 'I don't kno' was my reply. "Well go and find out" he says. "How" I say. "Look around" he says. Where I live we don't have a public waybridge so I had to 'get' the info and sign a document stating that it is my belief that the tare and atm are blah blah.... In other words he meant for me to guess. After a little Googling in reconned that the Tare was 1040kg and the ATM was 1460kg. I then had to stamp on the draw bar the ATM. How far off does people think I was? Hopefully the ATM benifited the next owner. Anyway we now own a Millard which is registered.

Interesting that you had to stamp the drawbar with the ATM? (the Vin yes) My understanding is 30yo vans do not have to display a plate. Never heard of a gas certificate for no gas, when I changed ownership it was a 'tick" option. Good reno, your van looks very fresh. Cheers

Very strange that you would need a gas certificate for a van not fitted with gas? I registered an Olympic caravan last week that I bought from NSW two and a half years ago. Towed it home on a day permit as it was just out of rego,I took it down to Beaudesert Transport office to reregister here in Qld. Had RWC and a copy of the last rego from NSW all went well, asked if it had gas I said no the van has never had gas, no worries was the reply. Only hiccup was I had to put a new Vin plate on as they didn't like getting under the A frame to see the welded chassis number. They accepted the tare and GVM that was stated on the old rego paper. I have re registered three other old Olympics and our old Quest over the last five years, none of them had gas and never had a problem.
Cheers Bob.

G'day bogwot,
It's hard to say how "accurate" your weight estimates are, due to the changes you made to the interior of the van. I'm guessing from your photos that your van is about 16ft in cabin length, so your estimate of a tare weight of 1040kgs might be close to the mark. I would have thought a 16ft van would have a tare weight of about 850kgs off the production line, but your interior changes and full-size fridge could bump that up to the 1000kg mark.
Your estimate of 1460kgs for the ATM is too generous. Single axle vans are typically given a 300kg loading allowance, and tandem axle vans a 400kgs allowance (although you will see variations of these figures from time to time). I would err on the side of safety and say your van should have a 1300kg ATM.
The axle and springs under your van will have an engineered load rating, and to exceed this rating could spell disaster if the van is towed over rough roads for any great length of time. Better to have a van that's loaded well within the maximum limit it was designed for, than try to fill it up with "everything including the kitchen sink" and have it collapse on a back road somewhere.
cheers, Al.

For a reference our 17'6" Viscount went 1360kg fully loaded (annex, water, gas, clothes, food, cooking bbq etc.)

Regarding the weight - my 16' Franklin weighs 1,250kg fully loaded. ATM was listed as 1,320kg as VicRoads just put down the number I told them. Congrats on getting it registered.
