It is time for us to renew our RACQ roadside assist plan.
We have been with them for a loooooong time ie Gold membership We have only ever had basic membership We have only ever needed to call them 2 or 3 times in the last 10 years
But times are a changing.... We now have a caravan and we now are going a lot further a field with our travels, from what I have read you can now join other states roadside assist ie RACV or NRMA
So who has what and who has had to use them and anything else you can help with in terms or conditions.
Cheers

Love what we have. RACV Total Care + the tow pack. We travel we could not do without it. We have used it.. 2010 - Touring Tassie in our Austin 7, we broke the crank shaft on the way up a hill.. way south of Cradle Mountains. We had the car towed to Devonport picked up a hire car at the Devonport Airport they offered to organise accommodation (at their cost) but we did not need it. Had the hire car for 4 days finished our itinerary with the car club. Jumped on the Spirit with the A7 in tow rang the Racv when we were in Port Melb and had it towed home. They originally offered to return the car home for us when we first called but we were using the car as our suitcase so we needed it to get our stuff onto the spirit. Total cost for us was around the $100 mark for the fuel we used in the hire car. Its fixed now 2013 - Travelling alone the Motorway between Hervey Bay and Brisbane with the big white box on the back the Fan Belt Tensioner on our Territory let go resulting in the fan belt shredding and in the process destroying the water pump pulley. RACV Total care towed the caravan and car to the Gold Coast caravan park we were booked into, parked it on site. Next day they towed the car to the local Ford Dealer and provided us with a hire car. The cost.... $20 for petrol in the hire car plus the car repairs .. nice car but its gone.. 2014 - Lost a wheel off the boat trailer. Most embarrassed about that one... They towed it home for me and parked it on the front lawn.. The trailer had been in the trailer park for a couple of weeks I suspect it had been tampered with. Moral.. should have checked me nuts before we left. Second moral.. make sure your spare tyre actually fits. I had been lugging this spare around for 15+ years only to discover it was a holden wheel that will not match up to the ford wheel pattern I use on the boat trailer Its a bit expensive but I can assure you it is nice to be able to just pick up the phone and have someone organise the rescue for you. ooooh I forgot... I have an MG so I have used regular Roadside assist many many times..

From what i have heard/ read any extra in policy is more than covered with peace of mind and not having to up spend, like hire car, second event tow like Bob described in 2013 above, if you do not need it the3n think of the nice points for helping others signed up in need. From what i have heard it seems to be the least argued about when interstate with many trying to shift the blame/ rescue to the similar body in that state, rather than just sort it out. The last thing you want is someone saying just ring RACQ who say no you need to get NRMA who then say we have an arangent ring them (allegedly haha)!

I figure asking for help on aussiefrogs (french car forum) or aulro (land rover forum) will get help more quickly than any road side service If it's major enough that I can't get it running myself, we will be needing a flat tray either way seeya, Shane L.

It is not our car when we use it around SE or western QLD but car and caravan, plus if we go further out west you can be 100-200klm between towns. And the last thing I want is to have our caravan left beside the road while the car heads off into the sunset, cause I reckon apples to oranges that there won't be a van there when we get back or very little of it. So you need to make sure they will take both and get you to some help/workshop.
But it is nice to have friends who can help you out locally. Cheers

RACQ have quite a few different plans - each with a maximum tow distance (see www.racq.com.au/roadside-assistance/compare-options). I would say if you plan to travel in remote areas 200 tow distance for your vehicle and your caravan is a minimum requirement. If you dont have roadside assistance make sure you have a spare few thousand dollars to pay for the tow truck, and pay for the additional accommodation. And you'll need to arrange the tow on your own. In remote areas (like the Stewart highway) it can be 300km between roadhouses. I wouldn't expect all of them to have mechanics.

Cheers Hi Lawrence, we are gold memebrs às,well and I am pretty sure that the caravan is covered in the tow recovery as our camper trailer was. As suggested if travelling the longermdistances, go upto ultra. With gold you get a lot more extras. Give them a call. They are very helpful Jacquie

Well you all have us thinking now, we don't have roadside assistance, never really gave it too much thought to be truthful. Hubby's a mobile mechanic and carries an assortment of bits and pieces for repairs but most of the time we go places that don't even have phone service, last year we were out of service for 4 days and didn't know that major storm had hit home until we came close to a town and our phones went crazy, we have the uhf but probably won't do much unless someone is close by anyway so it's certainly something that we should look into.

Hi Jacquie
Well we bit the bullit so to speak, and upgraded to RACQ Ultra, plus being a "Gold" we recieved a 25% discount off the price. One thing that was interesting was what they classed as "regional" it turns out they are talking about Waaaaay out west ie the border region. But I did some checks between major towns and the 120klm towing to a deport will cover everywhere we will want to go this year.
Cheers
