HI,
I live in SYDNEY NSW. I am transporting my caravan down the south coast this weekend 12 and 13 september.
I need to navigate the caravan backwards, turn left 90 degrees to miss the garage, then back right 90 degrees so that i can get the caravan to the back of the yard. The land is flat, but there is not enough space for the tow vehicle and caravan to do the 90 degree turn (as the side access between the house on one side, and the side fence is too narrow).
Would anyone be willing to loan me there motorised caravan boat manouverer so i can use it for 20 minutes this weekend to do the tricky manouver. I am happy to pay you and can show you pictures.
If anyone can help me, or knows of someone who can help by loaning/renting me out the device, please email me your contact details to peterhsv@hotmail.com I will call you and we can go from there.
Thank you all in advance.
Peter

Hi Peter, As you are in Sydney, why dont you pop down to a seller of such items, they must have demo models available to try/hire?

I've used ratchet wheels before. They are hopeless unless it's being moved on level sealed concrete.... It MUST be a single axle 'van too. You can't turn anything with more than one axle..... Have a look on ebay and see if you can find a ratchet jockey wheel in your area. SOmething like a Maco Mule.

Seems like you might need one of these? As Shane said, I broke a ratchet wheel just trying to put Vincent in the garage, the ratchet wheel, (quite a good size) would not push the van up a tiny slope which was the entry past where the roll a door sat when closed. Your van appears to be a tandem? (Would a small tractor like they use in van parks suffice)

My old mate next door uses ropes and a come along ratchet or an endless chain, you just need a good fence post/s to attach to and then either attach rope to the van's axle or draw bar.

HI All, Yes my caravan is dual axle, but I will take off the 2 tyres closer to the draw bar to do the manoeuvre. The manoeuvre is on flat ground, but it is buffalo grass on sand.
No one will lend anything, but was hoping if someone had one, they could hire it out to me for a small fee to save my back and the hassle. Im thinking of putting the tyres on a dolly, and use a rope and second car to tug the caravan sideways, whilst still hitched to the tow vehicle...... don't have many options...

That won't work, you will just dig holes. The only thing that will work unless it's level sealed concrete is the "caravan movers" most pommy 'vans are fitted with ... eg: www.ebay.com.au/itm/Purple-Line-Enduro-Single-Axle-Caravan-Mover-Remote-Controlled-12-V-/261229819412?hash=item3cd282b614I'll repeat that again ... THEY WILL NOT WORK ON GRAVEL, SAND OR GRASS. Trust me ... I know this. You are wasting your time trying to find one Would an offset front mounted towbar on your car allow you to push it into position ? Failing that your looking at a small hand winch attached to "something". seeya, Shane L.

HI All, Well after 1 and a 1/2 days of tugging, using ropes, dollies, and timber pieces, and lots of jacking up and down, and holding our breath moments, we managed to pull the rear of the caravan sideways about 2 metres, and then the drawbar about 1 metre sideways so that the manoeuvre around the garage can be achieved, using a Navara, then re-hitching the Commodore and reversing the 2 tonne caravan up a incline into the rear of the yard. will post up a photo soon.

Nice work. . I'm assuming you won't need to move it very often if it's that much of a PITA to get in and out of there? Shane is right about the ratchet style wheels though, they have their limitations. I like to put my van in forward into my driveway as it makes it easier to work on, and use as a sleep out. This is how I do it... The winch on the front of the Range Rover makes light work of it. The post I have the snatch block on is concreted about 900mm into the ground, so that won't move.
