Hi ya kiwijim I'm gunna restore the roof so I can reuse it ;D ;D. Have done a couple alittle bits inside "Ugly" nothing really to jump for joy about. I will remove the errant timber from the side and refit it once the roof is ready to go on. This time I should get it right. It aint all that bad, it is screwed on from the inside with a dash of glue. so with a little luck it should come off without tooo much trouble.. The car................. it is a 1934 Austin 7 Ruby Tourer. Much more advanced then a 1927. It has syncro on 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. the front and rear mechanical brakes are linked together... Had it a little over 2 years. Hey Atog As for towing Ugly behind it.............no hope it is only 7 hp... Would never get it down the drive.. Red MG was the ol courtin car................ ;D ;D The white MG will be the tow car ;D ;D ;D

Speaking of low powered heavy 1930's British cars my parents second car was a 1939 Austin ten sedan purchased in 1955. Dad used to say that was the taxable horsepower and it developed about 11. Their first car, purchased about the time I was born, was a 1928 Essex Super Six tourer. Was that ever a smooth old machine.

Hey Ross, The Mighty ESSEX Super 6 was my very first car, Way back last Century, in the 50's I remember I was as proud as punch when I drove it home, Cleaned it from top to bottom, checked it's water but forgot the oil. "Yep" 4hrs later while on its Maiden voyage around town, it decided to run a Big End. I can still recall the noise it made , and the noise the old man made when he found out. Here's a picture of an Essex, one year newer (1928 ) but exactly the same color as mine and in the same condition.

I reckon the Essex is a loverly car.... Wouldn't mind owning one but alais....................... I don't rule in this house I only live here ;D ;DSWMBO wants a Top Hat Saloon...... 1927 2 door Austin 7 Sedan for those that don't know............. Not that many around.. gotta wait till someone dies and hope the family doesn't want to keep it... Pulled the errant timber of the side of Ugly today. boy did I make her ugly........... won't be using that stuff again... well fire wood might be good........... ;D ;D Whilst undoing screws and pondering over how I will go about puting it all back in the correct position. I concluded I have to put the back wall on before I can put the roof on. So I get all the angles and dangles right.. dammm here I go again.......... ;D ;D its wood its good...... ;D ;D

;D, G'day bobt and kiwijim. Mum and Dad's Essex Tourer was grey but we had a parts car exactly the same as your coach, same colour and all up behind the car shed as they were called in those days, a garage was somewhere you took your car for replenishment and repair. The '39 Austin was FX/FJ green and I can remember Dad pulling the gearbox out of it to replace the clutch and all bearings using one spanner, a BSA. It had 4 different sizes in the one tool. He got it all back together and discovered a bolt left over from inside the box. He made me close my ears when he found that. When I was even younger we were returning from Nana and Pa's near Maitland in the Essex. We were going down Campbells Hill near where the airfield at Rutherford is now and Dad made the remark, "Gee she's smooth and quiet today." All of a sudden Bang and there's a huge cloud of steam and hot water coming from the front. Mum looked at Dad and said "you were saying?" Dad said nothing but shot her a filthy glance. A fan blade had come off and gone through the radiator. Overall, those old cars with their low compression slow revving engines appeared to be more reliable than some of todays crop.
Cheers, Ross.

yep.......... keep telling myself I love vintage and classic motor cars. But have you ever notice that 'cars' is a FOUR letter word. Using four letter words can get you into trouble in some places... ;D Well the "$%#^" at my place have both decided to give me trouble ... why do they both have to do it at the same time... So I am about to put this ............................thread................ back to where it started.............................. UGLY.................. The errant timber has been removed. Just too prove it... here... There is a lot of carefully planning happening about the next step.... while I spend my nights under the bonnet of the white one or under the chassis of the red one....... all good plans can easily go to...............sss.............tt.... ;D Ugly will have to remain a dream in my head for another couple of days till I sort the four letter words out...

The view from under my caravan awning............. ;D ;D then there was this one.. swmbo 'howled' all night ;D ;D it will be another month or so before I can get back into working on 'ugly'. I am getting myself mentally prepared to work on the aluminum roof frame and roof.............. hmm that could take longer then I care to think of, the mental bit.... ;D

Hi All One may wonder why I have been so quiet for the last couple of months. Well it all started mid February when we (swmbo & I) took some time out to venture off to that delightful little isle way down south “Tasmania”. This is us with some of the others lining at Station Pier to load on to the ferry We got there just fine. And toured around a fair bit We found a car musem… Had to stop and look Found something Big.. Swmbo would not let me drive down to where Kiwijim camped (some weeks after we left) She did not think we would be able to get back up to the road again We gathered together with some friends for a photo We stopped at some of the historic sites for a look see.. We drove along some magnificent roads and saw some great scenary Like all tourists we visited that jail Saw things in miniature too We got high into the air at the Tahune Air Walk Under some very close scruitiny we topped up the fuel tank so we could keep going up the hills We encountered the wild life at Cradle Mountain. And finally after some 1700 ks of ups and downs, lefts and rights.. we broke the crank shaft in our car. The RACT rescued us, took us to where we wanted to park the car and organised a hire car so we could finish our trip. (All paid for by Total Care --- Tank you very much ) Here we are in Devonport being helped onto the Spirit so we could get the car home. Since we got home Ugly got moved out of the shed and the Austin was moved in. Finally the motor is out after having to pull half the front off the car. Now to start an engine rebuild. Poor Ugly was parked in the back corner of the carport with a tarp over her she will have to wait till I finish fixing the car…. So Atog pleas put that rubber hose away.... But If ya looking for something to do...your most welcome to slip way down here to mexico..;D

Now young Bob I have a bone to pick with you.... Been some looooooooooooooooong months since there has been an update on U.A.S. I suspect there has been much dust gathering on the dear ol teardrop...... remember teardrop not dust gatherer. So....... What gives Bro? Need to see some update photos or maybe some of us CCers will have to gather together and come down and administer some black hose of encouragement..... Unless that is what you really want On a more serious note How's it going? Atog

Hi Atog Thanks for the compliment. “young”. Bit scary when I think back to the time I took Ugly out of the shed to fix the Austin. Where has all the time gone? I spent the last 2 days pondering over 'what have I done with the last 12 months..?' The list goes like this.. - Arrival of grand daughter - Help daughter look for Unit - Help son look for a house - Be good daddy for daughter and fix broken things in Unit - Take pilgrimage to the sunny state - Move son into his house (note to self, professional removalists are easier on back) - Work - Work - Work (note to self, buy lotto ticket) - Fix things I break - Fix more things that I break (note to self, stop touching stuff) - But I have been getting away in the still to mature caravan I have concluded that I was busy not finishing the Austin and not getting back to Ugly. I took a photo so you will remember what she looks like. You will note it is still in the same spot with another tarp over her. Best you deliver that black rubber thingie personally. The postie refused to be involved. bobt

bobt,
Just been reading through the last page of this thread and I was fascinated to see your trip to Tasmania in an Austin Seven. Presumably with the Victorian Austin Seven Club. I also own an Austin Seven and am the Immediate Past President of the Western Australian Club!
Happy Motoring! - Keith

hi keithd
Yes, the trip was a part of our 60th celebrations. Had a great time even though we broke our crankshaft.
A series of articles were published in last years "lightshaft"
We have a collection of members taking their cars to King Island at the end of this month. Would have loved to go but we were already committed elsewhere.
love that car

hi guys. I took a photo with the tellyphone but now I cannot find the cable.. think it is at work. I left the camera in the modern white box which is now on site for summer. I have to do a stock take, remove some 'stuff' that was 'stored' inside ugly. Then I will be able to undo some stuff I don't like and kick start it all again. Time is my enemy at the moment... bobt
