:)PHOTOS PHOTOS PHOTOS Hey Folks Cleaned up a bit opened the door and went “click” “click” so here we go…. The “Rear end” Please note: Lying on the floor in the centre is a 1 metre long steel ruler. That should give you an indication as to how BIG this thing is… ;D The original design had fixed tops on the bunks, access to the space below was from the sides..... on ya knees lad... ;D You will note by the panelling on top of the bunk, no material was wasted in the original construction. I plan on covering in most of the sides and accessing the space by lift up panels. The “Front Bit” The “Ice Chest” is only sitting in place. I have a fair amount of “construction” work to do around the front before I can permanently mount it. The bunk sort of wraps around the back of the Ice Chest. Given that there is not a lot of space inside this I am doing all that I can before the front wall goes on. And “down low” Watching the progress of another die hard and his van I thought I might put an access hatch in the side of this. I could use the space across the front, behind the ice chest to store tent poles for the annex and the like. ; So I have had to change a little bit of my original construction. I sure wish I had cut the access hatch before I put the walls up. When I first bought this home I could not work out what it was constructed from, it looked like masonite then I thought it was ply. So I tossed a coin in the air and decided to go the ply way.. I bought structural ply, cause it was cheep. I reasoned that when the roof goes on it will be protected. The roof is aluminium. I did not realize how hard it was going to be to get a good finish on it until I slapped a layer of undercoat on it. Now I have some filling and serious sanding to do… Should have gone the Masonite way.. dam… Well off to eat dinner with the tribe, seeing they have all turned up to commiserate daddy’s day….. Why do they still buy me socks……………………………………… bobt

Gidday Bobt, Congrats on making 300 mate you don't sound a day over ... ;D ;D Well the U A S is looking spot on there mate as usual and seems that you have been thinking of a few innovations as well bl@@dy hell I wish I had that sort of fore-thought I normally just steam roll ahead ( all be it steadily ) and then proceed to... 1. kick myself and do it later the hard way. 2. kick myself and forget about it and maybe next time I'll do it 3. kick myself pull it apart and do it begrudgingly Could you use a thick silicone paint or a rapid filler product on that ply or will it dislodge or crack up with movement as she is being towed I suppose it depends on the size of the filled spots - Oh well just a thought. Bobt please don't be forlorn about how long it is, it's all about what you do with it surely Hey wasn't fathers day a blast at least ya got some socks. Keep up the great work mate she's taking shape and before ya know it you'll have it parked beside the ocean somewhere having a fresh caught fish supper ;D Hey Bobt have you been taking note of all the measurements and been doing drawings etc you could sell plans (or Email to good mates ) to like minded people that want to try their hand at making their own weekend getaway wagon, even allow for variations in layout etc. you could base it on a 6 x4 box trailer, Even make em and sell em yourself Carl

Maaaaaaaaate Don't you just love the smell of all that new plywood It's great to see all the progress and at the end of a successful day to sit back with a beer and say "Yep another step closer to using my new/old TD" Keep chipping away at it and enjoy the journey... Even though it has been two years on mine it seems to have flown Now I'm looking for things to do..... Went from having so much to do to ..... weeeeeell ..... I could...... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D The missus was complaining about how long it was taking and now She has spent more on it in the past month and a half than I have What I'm trying to say in a long winded way is ..... the reward at the end is all worth it...... but the journey is also Keep your photos coming Cheers Atog

Hey bobt, I'm also very impressed with the work you've done on the van. You'll have to change the name to Cinderella...it's certainly no longer one of the ugly sisters! ;D ;D Some of that intricate woodwork tells me that you are definitely not a two-bit amateur when it come to working with a saw. Keep the good stories coming!!! cheers, Al.

Hey Guys Thank you for the compliments but please go easy.. I have ta get me head through the door... ;D ;D Kiwicarl… believe me there have been many a time when I have re dun it, undun it or just gone bug ga … We all have those great thoughts after the fact.. best to try and think about it before we do it..even helps if you got a longer term plan about what is going where… I have given it lots of thought as to how it is going to be used… I brought a nice new trowel on the weekend so I should be able to apply suitable amounts of “filler” As for building em to make money……………………………….. nope not me… I could get the little fella to do a CAD drawing if someone was real keen… Atog.. the misses is now asking “how is it going?” All got to do with those we bumped into at Goondiwindi earlier in the year. Yep the smell of fresh cut timber is nice……………….. All most as nice as the sound of a sharp plane smoothing out the rough bits… Hey Millard 1399…. Aint control of the camera angles great… ya can make anything look good it you point the lens the right way.. ;D ;D Ugly is what it will always be... I know what it will look like when the roof is fitted and "erected"

Well folks .................... I hummed and harred and pondered for ages. :-/Tossed and turned in my sleep.... One slip the wrong way and it will all be history.. After all it aint metal so I cannot weld a new bit in.... nor is it fibreglass where I could slap some back. it is "WOOD " ;D ;D It will not grow back ............. no matter how I feed it or water it... So I finally took the plunge.... ;D ;D ;D Sharpened the pencil, it is now a mere 1 1/2" long... gotta find a new one. With considerable care.... Don't wanna miss by 2 inches... Marked out where I want my side hatch..... Then thought about the advice I was given. got the hole cutter bits out.... looked at em..... .... nope aint gunna do that... Dug out the 2nd biggest drill bit I had............. Yep... this is it.. Drilled a whole hole in each corner...................... Starred a bit more and a bit more.... sat down and thought I could paint over the pencil marks................. and patch the holes I really want this hatch............................. Got ol' faithful [the jigsaw] out and went for me life... Done................... now I have to clean it up a little, get a hinge...make a door and fit it... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D After this ordeal I took the rest of the night off.

Aaaaahhh progress is sweet…. Well it should be. Last issue I told how I cut a hole in the side of Ugly to give me access to some storage space. The next step was to make a door. Well now….. I took a slap of timber leaned it against the outside. Reached inside, holding my 1&1/2’ pencil, in my left hand I marked the slap of timber that was soon to become my door. I lugged it over to the bench took trustie in my right hand and chewed away.. Walla …. a door. I looked at it and thought……………. Hmmm this has one side bigga den da udder. I took the cut out to the whole. Yep fits nice one way but not the udder. Yep I have a hatch that is not square. Now given that I have very little room in side the shed I struggle to do anything on the hatch side of “Ugly”. So now I ponder over how to fix this little dilemma. Yes I know.. make the hole a whole lot bigger. So I have a plan. Use the router…… fix some guides to the side so that I do not make the hole too much bigger and to make sure that this time it is square. Well you know when you have those things you are not so keen to do………… you find all the excuses in the world to keep ya self occupied. Well well yes I am thanks.. this weekend I cut the grass, weeded the garden, cleaned the spouting, even took the kitty litter out… hang on we haven’t got a cat… ;D ;D I still have not fixed the whole hole…. But I did start putting rubbish out for the hard rubbish collection. Even put the wife on the pile…. But she kept coming back inside… dammm.. After a harrowing weekend of chores around the house and pondering over the hole in “Ugly” I went to bed. I dreamed of cleaning the spouting in the rain. Yippee we had rain all weekend.. I woke up stiff sore and wet. No I didn’t thank you very much... I found myself on top of the pile of rubbish on the nature strip… thanks love… ;D ;D

G'day bobt, I guess the real challenge for you is to make sure that nothing you do on the van ends up looking "beautiful" , otherwise the "Ugly" tag goes out the window! So I see it as a very clever forethought on your part to make sure the hatch cover was out of square. ;D ;D Champion effort! cheers, Al.

Hey millard1399… There is absolutely no effort required to make ugly look ugly…she does it all on her own.. ;D ;D With a father that worked in the construction industry, a brother who is a quantity surveyor, a son that is a fitter and turner that measures in microns and sons father in law that is a builder, I need to be seen to be making an effort… Okay Folks the on going challenge....................… So after collecting myself off the rubbish pile on the nature strip I thought………. Hmm move ugly to one side so I have room. I pumped up the tyres, removed the props that stopped her from tipping up opened the garage door and rolled her out then back in leaving me with room to move down the side I need to be… Now I can take a better photo for those that doubt my ability to cut straight… Before … Took to the router with my little 6” steel ruler. Dammm I caint read the measurements with my “garage glasses”. Scooted off inside to get the real ones. SWMBO yelled “ Wots ya doing??” in sort of single syllable words I told her and she yelled back “ measure it twice before ya cut. ya always miss by 2inches, ya fool” Now that I could see I measured the distance between the bit and the edge of the surface plate of the router. Back out with the pencil, marked out a straight line along the side of Ugly the required distance necessary to square up the whole hole. Took hold of a square and marked out the remaining three sides. With the real glasses on… Ratted through my off cuts found 4 with straight edges and nailed em to the side of ugly….. presto I now have guides to guide my router in my shaky ol hands …. Sat myself on the cold old concrete with the router in hand. Moved it around to make sure it was going to trim what I wanted. Then I applied power…………………….. WOW!! Stood back…. Well not really……. Leaned back Yep the whole is square…. After… How good is that……………… .. Even cut out a door to go in. And its SQUARE……………… Now how the hell do I fit the hinges…………………………………………… Think I saw it on the forum somewhere. Shall have to go hunting…..

Well Bathurst is long gone. It just does not seem the same now as it was back in the days when the Chargers battled with the GTs and Toranas while the Cortinas and the Corolas got in the way... I have achieved a little progress in "The Shed". I made a frame to go inside the door. Dug out some hinges and spent an hour looking for some suitable screws. It seems everytime I go and build something new or restore something I spend more time hunting for nuts, bolts and screws then I spend actually doing the bit I want them for... Very carefully, with my real glasses on, measured where the hinges had to go... Thought if I muck it up I can easily make another door ;D ;D Fitted it all together. It seems that I spent several hours getting this thing right. Then I under coated it... And now it is fitted And guess what.......................... It opens too................... How kool is that ;D ;D

;D ;D After much careful thought and planning (yes it did hurt ;D) I concluded that there was little more to do in the “inside of the front”. I added my afterthought,” the hatch” Fitted the Ice chest. Shoulda scrubbed it out before I did that… oooh well…. Nailed and glued the front panels on the bunks even undercoated some of it. Slapped some paint around the space under the front of the bunks. I will never get a paint brush into some of that area once the front is it on…. Then I sat and pondered a bit more….. Now ya see it….. I prepared a sheet of ply beforehand….. (actually about 3 weeks ago) Recharge the glue bottle, got the tools ready, close to hand. Trolled through my jars of nails. Picked out the flat ‘ead brads and grabbed the left over box of flooring nails (You kno the ones with them there barbs…they don’t pull out that easy when ya bend em…) Having spent weeks planning the execution of this little task, I thought hmmm 6pm.. tea could be ready soon, then maybe not. I really want to do this tonight. Went inside to check with swmbo “Hey Dear how far away is tea?” she said, “Come Closer” I said “I wanna stick a bit of wood on the TD, how far off is tea?” Mind you the tv is blaring out the lastest variation of some dam soap opera where they all marry each others x mother in laws, so I figure she cannot hear me over the tv. She said, “Come Closer”… I am now standing in the kitchen having walked the full length of the family room, past her favourite rocking chair, the kitchen table that was no where near looking like I was gunna be eating my tucker there. I said “How far off…………………” She said “oooh about 3 feet.” “aaaaaaaaaaahhh” She has done it to me again………… So out side I went and started work……………………………… . About an hour later I had this……. And cold tea

Now where was I…. mexico nah .. ooooh yeah that’s it…. “click click click” well after battling with the little beast.. spending hard earned on it I finally got it to go…. So I looked into the sky. Yep it aint gunna rain… So here we go again. Pump the tyres up drag it outa the shed and line it up in the back yard to get this…. Dam where the hell did that washing come from….? It wasn’t there when I moved UGLy outa the shed. She musta figured I wanted to take photos and hung it while I was driving round the block… Anyhow I could not resist taking this one too. ;D ;D Swmbo came out side took one look and said “YEAH RIGHT… IN YA DREAMS… LIKE THAT IS GOING TO TOW IT ANYWHERE”

Hey Mick gotta confess........... stuck it back in the shed and have not really touched it much since I took the photos.... However.............. I did go out and buy some new different glue... Well its different to what I have used in the past. "BONDCRETE" Now in the good ol days when I was a lot younger, I use to have a part time job landscaping and building swimming pools. Used a lot of Bondcrete for sealing and other stuff. Never in my wildest dreams did I think of using it to stick wood together. After a discussion with a car club member that made hood bows to order and used it to glue the bent strips of wood together I thought I would try it.... WOW does it stick........ and hold... I have been sticking little bits inside ugly... you know those little bits of trim to make bits look nicer..... ;D ;D And I have been doing some serious preparation work on the Austin..... We are touring Tasmania in it in February ;D ;D At the moment it is the only sensible conversation that I am able to hold with SWMBO... I will be back at it in another couple of weeks... ;D

Hey Bobt, Don't worry about the roof mis-alignment, you can just add a bit to the new one when you make it. ;D Tell me all about that little red ripper convertible in front of Ugly, ? Is it your original courting machine ? ;D ;D ;D I think its an Austin 7 my guess is its around 1930 at the latest ? Tell me.......... Tell me............ Tell me ......... ;D ;D ;D the reason I'm so interested is because it reminds me of my second car, a 2 door 1927 hard-top. kiwijim
