After being inspired by Cobber, on the VV site i decided to replace the 30+ or so, rusting el cheapo tech bronze plated screws, around the exterior of van. Grabbing stainless or monel ones is not cheap however a local engineering- supplies store in Asquith was helpfull, ( Mitchells) Turns out his Dad built a very early alloy van but did not patent or go into production so he & his wife were musing about a family fortune oppourtunity lost . What i was wondering is in previous replica or restoration things, i have been involved with, meant that the slot will be horizontal or vertical & packing the hole to ensure this look. My Franklin has 99% of the slot heads at a 45degree facing right look, is that a Franklin thing or previous owners tightening stuff? Does anyone have an idea of what should be shown for the original Factory look? Cheers

Interesting point.I thought I was the only one that did that with the screw heads. I worked at Franklins way back, never got taught that one though. Have always done it, but have no idea where I picked it from. Maybe one of the old boys taught me along my employment travels. Cheers, Bryan

Did (& still do) the horizontal & verticles. Bugga now i have to pack a gazillion 45degree slot heads to keep it looking real! Haha the price of too much time on my hands, actually it is waaay down the food chain in the to do list! Muchly appreciated thanks Bryan.

Did (& still do) the horizontal & verticles. My Dad was a builder, you got chastised quickly if the screw slots did not line up.

Not sure about caravans - but for the Navy. When we replaced portholes - the slot headed screws had to be parallel with the window frame it was going into. If there was a corner screw - it was at 45 deg.
So as the others have said "Vertical to vertical- horizontal to horizontal."
Cheers Atog

So with these corner slotheads do we like the diagonal to point into the corner or link pointing to each face at 45 deg

Nah, I use a driver with a clutch, so when it's driven, it's done.

I remember my high school woodwork teacher, Mr Clarke, a semi retired chippy, rapping us over the knuckles if we didn't 'clock' screw heads. Another name is 'timing'.
Although that still doesn't answer your question. It was probably due to the original builders having a sense of pride in their work. As old Mr Clarke used to say "A sign of a true craftsman is how they clock their screws!" (I still hear it today, in the back of my head, every time I use the electric screwdriver.)

My dad is a master builder & carpenter AND taught carpentry so we can't escape from the "screw" rule, even if he can't actually see them, he feels them!
