Hi all,
My van is due for NSW rego next month but because I am mid-reno I had a few queries.
1. Is van rego like car rego, if you let it lapse it is harder to re-register it? Its not stored on the road so it doesn’t need to be registered for at least another 6 months. 2. The rego papers say ‘inspection required’. I thought ‘trailers’ were exempt? 3. Is there any point continuing the rego on the van if it has been stripped inside? Do things like gas lines/electrical get tested with the inspection?
Just another thing to learn about!

Andrew, Our van has been out of rego now for some years and we need to get a 'blue slip' from a suitably approved mechanic, yours would be the same once the rego lapses, I think they will do an inspection up to one month after the rego has lapsed, but not real sure on that.
Yes the caravan is a 'trailer', but any trailer that has brakes has to be inspected annually, anything over 750kgs I think.
It took me 2 years to get to the stage where I could consider registration, but that was a complete rebuild. If you think you can do the work inside 12 months some mechanics will come to your place for a fee and do the inspection there, at least ours will if we plead enough. They can only check the lights and pull the hand brake on and make sure the tyres are ok, there is not much else that they can do. If you let the rego lapse I think you will need some certification of the gas fittings in the van are ok, but we have been told that we do not have to produce anything to do with the 240v side on a 'new' rego according to our man. Also need a weighbridge certificate, but I think sometimes they will use old rego papers if they are not too old.
Hope this helps a bit, our biggest problem has been finding someone near who can do the blue slip that has easy access into and out of the premises.

Never ever let your rego laspe in any part of Aussie= major mucking around! If it is like a car (i think it is) you have to renew within 3 months or hand back the plate & obtain a Blue Slip later. My renewal is not till July so i do not know about annual inspection for over 750KG, my boat coffin trailer is just pay without inspection.

G'day
1. Yes it's just like car rego in that respect. Save yourself the hassle by keeping it registered. It's a small price to pay. 2. Trailers are exempt but caravans are not, unfortunately. 3. Yes pink slips are much less hassle than blue slips. For a blue slip you'll definitely need a weigh bridge ticket which may raise issues if your mods have increased the weight (which they will). And the inspection will be more thorough. They are more likely to knock you back for gas fittings etc especially if it looks like you've made some modifications in that area.
Cheers

rightio thanks guys for the comments. Its off to get a pink slip for me! Its only internal cosmetic stuff I am playing with, all the mechanicals are pretty good. Its more than towable and all the lights work. I had a feeling it may have been an issue to let the rego lapse, dont want to put myself through more torture (of getting a blue slip) if I can avoid it!!

Very wise choice Andrew....blue slip definitely a hassle ( weigh bridge cert and gas compliance etc ), you'd have to hand in the old plate (if it's been unregistered for more than 3 months) then pay for a new plate when you reregister, there's a new registration fee with stamp duty I think added on....dramas ! If you were only thinking of keeping it unregistered for say 6months it would end up costing more in blue slip + weigh bridge certificate + new rego plate etc compared to say 6months rego cost, so financially you're worse off - not to mention all the dramas & time consumed !! In NSW any trailer or caravan weighing more than 250kg ( or having brakes, or having dual axles ) needs a pink slip every year....only single axle unbraked trailers under 250kg are pay without inspection as far as I know. Cheers - Steve.

Just a bit of updated info regarding NSW Rego.....apparently now with trailers and caravans - stamp duty no longer is charged when you transfer rego ! Last week I was pleasantly surprised when I transferred rego after buying an A-Van foldup caravan...they said that there was no stamp duty applicable now on trailers and caravans - woohoo !

Can,t believe the government has not moved in on this one. At least we can cross the borders without inspection
