We are at 'curtain' time too, interesting you got a machine for $100. Looking good as always, although i spotted dirt on the first image... no wait, it was my screen (bet your heart slipped a beat). not really poor old Vincent has plenty of life scars, like his owner!! EDIT:Talk about scars, keep getting your skin checks this was a double carcinoma but they missed part of the main culprit & I have to go back again BUGGER!!! I'm worried my beer may spill out the bottom when they go lower???

I know I'm a bit late, but I have just gone through your entire thread and it is awesome. The work you have done is exceptional and I have learned plenty along the way! I agree with tasmillard, if you do move on , please start another thread!

Another improvement (?) for Vincent. We have welded a stiffening bar under each side of the draw bar (over 50 welds) combined with fishplates welded each side under the Z chassis, to prevent fatigue. Some cement highways cause the van to buck (up & down) which would have put a lot of stress on the draw bar, I expect this will hopefully eliminate the behavior. Fishplates to eliminate fatigue on the Z chassis, welding upside down has its challenges. All finished (8 Hours later) New 8mm sq cable to replace the original, Dc to battery. The welder is my new next door neighbor, what a find!!!!

Finally finished our 12v set up, by adding a DC charger to Vincent, I have another DC charger fitted in the vehicle for the second auxiliary, both are "smart alternator" ignition. My battery is a left over Diesel crank, that my x-son in law dumped 2 days after RACQ fitted it to their BT50. Charging nicely through 8mm square cable: It all sits under a vented seat The C-Teck is another left over, its a bit small but gets there eventually overnight. We will not have solar mounted but carry a portable panel.

A good set up but look up the regs for battery storage due to the hydrogen gas let off from battery what I read was it needs to be vented at the bottom and to the out side. since I don't want to put a hole in side of van and mine is a gel battery so I can mount it on an angle under van just have to weld up a frame for battery to fit in.

We have a floor vent, not sure I want to pierce the side cladding? Collyn Rivers (the author) is horrified how new manufacturers are completely ignoring battery ventilation.

Hi Mustang - one month ago we purchased a 1976 21ft Viscount Supreme (we think) and I've been searching across the WWW since for inspiration and guidance ever since. Huge congratulations on your renovation - your workmanship is nothing short of perfection something we are striving for our "Sally". We have completely gutted our van (due to finding a few more damp spots than we originally spied...) but have kept the internal shower unit - I've struggled to find another example of a VS with a shower.... Our windows and boards are unfortunately in very similar condition to yours prior to what looks like an insane number of hours of cleaning, polishing and tedious replacements so if you're bored....I'll continue to watch with great interest and be sure to point our electrician and plumbers (we don't have any real trade experience) in the direction of these pages for guidance. A big thank you for generously sharing your story and experiences - as they say the good, the bad and the ugly. All the best health wise. Nards

Hi Nards Welcome to our Classic Caravans forum. Thank you for your kind comments. The forum fosters vans from 1970 to 1980, & we welcome all comers interested in Classics.
Just join up.
You are welcome to start your own thread in the “Hall of Fame”, there you can post images from a third party such as Photobucket, Tinypic, Flickr etc. (Flickr Recommended) see tutorial top of General page. Our sister forum Vintage Vans (1970 & earlier) have many duel members looking in, so ask any info about your project.
Cheers Brent

When I added a one way valve, to solve water seeping back to the tank, pumping became a chore. So enter the Whale pump $49. from Caravans plus. (virtually silent) The one way valve is under the pump. A momentary push switch saves water. Pros: I love it, cheap, silent, light current draw, water can still be extracted manually. Cons: Pump cannot be run dry.

I have to report on the welded stiffening bar to our Vincent, this weekend was the first road test to Laidley & return, 400km. This accessory in my view is a must if you have any towing issues, ours was bucking on certain cement surfaces, but now the towing is much easier on all surfaces with the lateral stiffness, 100kph a breeze. Before adding this bar to both sides of the hitch we could get Harmonic Jumping that needed the speed to be lowered to cease the operation, now in the mirror I see the van settle very quickly, after an undulation in the road ,all for a $25.00 investment (and 8 hours labour)

will have to keep that in mind we are doing a short trip up to the central coast once it is registered mine has got a bigger draw bar by the looks of it the old one towed beautifully from Cowra to Sydney no brakes but mostly empty the new one is about 0.5mm thicker than original but the same length so here is hoping I hate welding upside down.

Now we have the fantastic whale pump installed, I guess we will use more water so Vincent now has a tank gauge. From Caravans Plus a cinch to fit, you need a 22mm hole bit. This is self contained , 12v NOT required, you push the button to view the reading.

This thread has a few Caravans Plus mentions & i almost think we need a thread of how good they are to deal with. Like most sceptics you read gushing reviews etc, so it makes it a hard bar to live up to but... a must use company for all the right reasons!
Thanks Mustang for keeping the imagary of this thread in tact. Hopefully for many years to come with new pic host.

No heaters in houses cars or caravans, 30+ years heater free! I suffer when at others places, so wear a few layers to rip off inside, their stuffy 28c heated room while the occupants still claim to be cold... oh well.

Something we love while caravanning is our campfire. (Seeing that our gas heater has been canned )We have now upgraded from carrying a two stroke saw & all the paraphernalia associated, to a battery saw, yet to be tried but a demo was impressive. ( Guess this is the last time it will be on the kitchen bench??) With all the open days, dozens of visitors have made their way into Vincent's parlor, so the steps have taken a hiding with high heels (yes high heels), amazing how the non caravanners stride in without a thought about their footwear. A re-sand & lacquer has put them back to respectable. This "Vincent" thread is now back near the start. ( I will tune it as I go) Re-loading the images singularly from photobucket to our computer, to Flickr, to this thread, has taken a few hours, but for history's sake I hope its worth it, essentially for new & existing members to read.

Amongst the junk mail I spotted a Hayman Reece tow ball scale just $60.00 (Autobarn) Nice to know the actual towball down weight : 180kg falls into 14% of the laden weight. Interesting that "Zippos" ball weight of his 17"Viscount is also 180kg. The previous bathroom scale method was well out at 220kg which was worrying me. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD:
