A family mem ber has this old Viscount pop top as a project. It is unregistered and does not have an ID plate. Can anyone advise where we can find out the weight details required for the ID plate . ATM, GTM etc ?

G'day John,
The chassis number is a 1979 number, but there's no reason why the van couldn't have been sold new in 1980, given the poor state of the caravan industry at that time.
There certainly was a Viscount Explorer camper as early as 1974 and running right up to at least 1979. I can't help you with an exact weight for your camper, but an old advertisement I have for a second-hand Viscount Explorer says the weight is 12 cwt (hundredweight). Converting that to metric gives you a Tare weight of 12 x 52kgs = 624kgs. Assuming the rego authorities give these campers the same loading allowance as a single axle full size van, you can add 300kgs to the Tare to give the ATM of the camper.
I'll leave it to the owner of this camper to determine whether these weight figures seem realistic for the camper.
cheers, Al.

The Viscount is a "Viscount Explorer .1 or a Viscount Explorer 4" I just got one the same that needs some TLC. My chassis VIN is similar but starts with a 94. Mine is a 1982 year. The Rego details on mine for weights are: • Tare weight: 840 kg • Gross vehicle mass: 1100 kg This link shows a few of the viscount wind up campers www.canvasdesigns.com.au/campers/?nggpage=3I am having some trouble with the wind up system and had to do a lot of searching to find some info. What I have found is: The system these viscounts use is known as "Goshen Lift System" All the information on the lift system can be found here along with parts diagrams and replacement procedure. www.goshenstamping.com/lift.phpI thought I would post this info as I am sure it may help someone in the future to find and repair the wind up system.

Hi folks! Ive just brought a Explorer 8 that needs gutting and starting again! Can i ask where and how much you paid to have the canvas redone? It doesnt have a winding mechanism to lift the roof, but it has 4 rachet type mechanisms, one at each corner to hold the roof up. The bed boards need replacing too-do the slide out or pull out? Any info ? Thanks

Hello forum,
I have a Viscount Explorer "8 75" pop top camper rom 1980 I believe which I bought unlicensed.
Need some help on where I might find any identifying details like a chassis number - couldn't see anything welded on the A frame.
Any ideas greatly welcomed otherwise it's a long exercise for re-registration.
Kind regards
David

G`Day David, what State are you in? In some ways your rego task is no different as most places do not have details available pre 1990 in most cases, i am sure it is before VIN numbers so no change there in getting one applied and registered to the camper, if you had the old road rego details or not.
