Hi all!
I’m new to the world of classic caravans and caravanning in general. We recently picked up this 1970 Viscount 15ft (Ambassador?) as a bit of a compromise. I wanted something a bit more vintage but this was registered and appeared to be in pretty good “original” condition for a reasonable price. We weren’t able to eyeball it ourselves before buying (a friend did though) so while her overall condition is sound she isn’t as schmick as she looked in the photos but perfectly useable.
The initial plan was just to get her weatherproof (the roof vent needs work as do many of the windows), clean and then take her on a trip. But there is some water damage in the rear so I think she may get a bit more than a clean before we go anywhere. Of course I’m learning now just how difficult it may be to get the water damage repaired. Who knew getting a bed frame or a cabinet out of a caravan could be so tricky!! (PS: I have no skills in this area. I made a mess of it today which I left before I broke something for hubby to check out when he gets home).
I do have a couple of questions for a Viscount expert (I’m sure there will be many more!) I was told she is 100% original but a few things I’m not sure of –
1) The cushions in the dining area are fabric and while they feel like they have 40+ years of grease on them from the few photos I’ve seen and knowing what little I do about the early 70’s, I would have thought they would initially have been vinyl? Would they/should they have a timber backing on them? Mine are sat on a sheet of MDF
)
2) Hubby and I are arguing over whether the lino is original. It does go under the cupboards but not all the way to the walls and there doesn’t seem to be anything under it so I guess it probably is. I’m a bit surprised there is carpet in the rear room and assume this is an afterthought by someone? Maybe they were trying to fix the water damage and like me got stuck getting the bed out!
3) Does the “double” bed fit with the type originally installed? It is only fixed to the floor in two places and precariously balanced on two planks of timber (with an old bunnings price tag on them) to the wall and cabinet either side. The two legs have also been welded onto another bracket which looks a bit after market (see photos below)
One other question is does anyone know where or if I can get the edging that is used in these vans around all the cabinets and table etc. Most if it is ok but parts of the table edging have seen much better times (also in photos).
Thanks in advance for any help and for running such an informative forum! I’ll post pics along the way as we spruce her up. Can’t wait to give her a new paint job!
