Hello all! Found this forum when I've been looking for painting methods for old caravans, and love all the story's through here! So I thought I would put in my story! My wife and I bought an old Jayco Jaydove after we started finding it too difficult to camp in the camper trailer with our two young kids (room was the issue). So we pretty much swapped the camper trailer for a 1977 Jaydove! Our first caravan (well, sort of).

So purchase price was reasonable (considering the new canvas) at $4,500. First thing first, it was filthy! So first weekend of ownership was spend cleaning it, replacing/re packing bearings and replacing brake fluid and checking brakes! Fun fun!
Second thing was replace the old (cracking and splitting) tyres with a set of 14" sunraysias and 195/r14 tyres!
Also installed a 100Amp AGM battery and wired in internal lights, new rear LED's, water pump and a couple 12v outlets for lighting and miscellaneous! Also a charging circuit back to the tow vehicle (GU Nissan Patrol).

So first trip away, the main winch cable breaks as we set it up and the thing falls down on my head. Ouch!
We soldier on by propping up the roof with awning poles!
On the way home we notice the stock tyre carrier (with the bigger, heavier wheel and tyre combo), is leaning, the weld has cracked! Great!
Luckily it's heading into winter in TAS so no camping, great time for a bit of a refit!
So grinder, paint and some aluminium Chequerplate comes out!
The idea of the Reno is to restore, not rebuild! So keep that in mind with these pics!

New Chequerplate on the rear and starting to strip out the interior (well, the flooring and the fridge which didn't work). My helper in this shot!

Putting on the first coat! Good old Watyl Solarguard! Amazing what replacing the black on the drawbar and chassis with silver (after hours and hours with the grinder mind you). Wife is doing a wonderful job with the roller! Last pic is first coat on!

G'day jaydove77, and welcome to the forum! You've certainly put in a lot of hard work to get the campervan back up to scratch, and the end result is a credit to you! It's hard to believe that Jayco started out building just the different smaller campervan models Finch, Dove, and Swan...and then you look around today and whopping Jayco vans are everywhere! cheers, Al.

Hi jaydov77 - I too have a jaydove 1977 model which has had a mini makeover in side and new canvases but the outside of the old girl looks a bit worse for wear and certainly showing her age. I like what you've done with the checkerboard. I've had a ride on mower knock into mine back left corner and torn a hole in it, do you think checker board would be good to fix?

Hi, I have just brought a 1977 Jaydove. Paid way too much for it and currently replacing all electrics and have serviced the breaks. Canvas is in great condition. So silver linings! Lots more I need to do to it and would love advice. I’m from Tassie too and looking forward to getting into the camping culture for summer.
