Hello Everyone! We have just been given a Franklin Trailmate camper. We are so excited about the work in front of us! Could anyone give me any details on it, even if it seems insignificant it will be excellent? The chassis # Y775. an obvious dot. Ideas on repairing the roof, we managed to fix the cable system now all 4 corners rise instead of 3. Much nicer. The winch does clunk as you get towards the top extension any ideas? The back end of the roof is rotten, we would like to remove it and rebuild. We have an excavator that could do the lifting. We are a family of 4 and love the idea that we can throw in food, clothes & fishing gear and we’re out of here instead of the tent, ………. You know how it goes!!!!! Anyhow thanks for accepting me and hello to you all! Cheers Sonya

Hi Trailmate
Welcome aboard. Don't know whether I would be excited about the work ahead of me but certainly would be excited to be given such a great camper..
It has to amaze one to think that some person welded that dot on the draw bar.. just how did they do it so perfectly?
I am sure someone with some real expertise will pop up and provide you with some advice. Like the age of her and what you may need to do to fix the 'clunk'
In the mean time how about some photos of the inside.

G'day Sonya, I think your camper is the first one of these that we've seen on the forum, so you're probably not likely to get much info out of our members. The only thing I can help you with is the chassis number. The "Y" prefix was used in 1977, and your number of 775 is fairly low in the total number of Franklins built that year, so your camper would have been built in maybe February or March that year. The 'dot' at the end of the number is also the first time I've seen a chassis number finished like that, so I'm not really sure what its significance is. Maybe it was the welder's last day before retiring, and he wanted to leave his mark on the last chassis he built. (I'm kidding, of course ) Hopefully someone will come on here and help you with your other questions, but I fear you will more likely be on your own and have to muddle your way through the repairs. All the best. cheers, Al.

Hi Craig Pleased to hear from you, sorry it has taken so long! We have some work in front of us but it will be well worth it. As you know the roof has rotted out on the rear end. Any pics you have would be lovely. Thanks Sonya

Howdy Trailmate, Welcome to the forum, Having worked on various camper trailers over the years, I have had the unfortunate pleasure of having to repair every part of them at one stage or other. I am having a bit of a guess here regarding the "Clunk" you have in your van, If this noise you hear is evident every revolution of the winch handle, it points to Miss-alignment of the winch, the sound heard, could be the cable stacking up on one side of the winch drum and slipping off the pile so to speak, the only way to check this is to get someone to wind the handle while you look at the movement of the winch. If this happening, re-alignment of the winch Base will have to be done ,so the cable, when wound up will roll evenly over the full width of the drum, there will be 4 bolts on the flange base of the winch, loosen them, then move the drum slightly left or right to bring it back into line so that the cable is in the center of the drum. Hope this is of some help, As far as the roof repair goes, that's another bigger story. Cheers kiwijim

I bought 1 of these 3 days ago, on EBAY. I wish I hadn't, as it was really hard to get the two ends bolted up. Then it just wouldn't wind down. The timber around the top of mine is also rotting. Hopefully, it will be replaced with metal. I can't imagine 2 people staying in it at the same time, as they are very small. The registration papers say 1980, but the could be the year of first registration and not the year of manufacture. Attachments:
