Hi, can anyone give me some information on the caravan in the photo please? It is a glendale caravan but unsure of the year, model or any other info. We are refurbishing the van and would like to hear about any handy hints or tips you may have for us. It was stripped of gas and water fittings and appears to have been remodeled numerous times (3 layers of lino on the floor!) plus we want to rewire for 12v and install either solar or a generator. Thanks in advance for your help. :) Attachments:

G'day johnes, and welcome to the forum! ;D
Glendale were a Canadian company, and had been making caravans for the Canadian and American markets since about 1950. In early 1970, they entered the Australian market after purchasing the Murrumba Star caravan factory in Caboolture Qld. While they made various small sized caravans, Glendale were more noted for the vast number of large caravans they built. Most of their output would have been in the 18 to 30 foot category, it seems.
Looking at your photo, I can see your van has wind-out windows, which makes it a 1973 model or later. If you also have the Starlight Four Seasons hatch, that puts it at late 1974 or later. Glendale appear to have pulled out of the Australian market in 1978 or 1979 when the caravan industry slumped badly, and 25 manufacturers around Australia went down the gurgler.
I don't have enough information to tell you what models Glendale produced. If you tell me what the cabin length and width is, I'll see if it says anything about the model name in the 1970s advertisements I've collected.
For tips and information about the things you want to do to your van, have a read through the information in the "Techo Stuff" section of the forum. I'm sure you'll find a lot of interesting stuff there.
cheers, Al.

Thanks so much for your reply Al, most appreciated. The van is 20ft by 7.8ft and yes she has wind out windows and 2 Starlight Four Seasons hatches. Any further info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John

Howdy johnes, Welcome to the Forum, I can tell you, I got very excited when I read the name of your caravan, GLENDALE. ;D You see, I happen to own a GLENEAGLE, My van, made by Thomson's in Scotland, is believed to be the only van of it's Brand known to exist in Aussie, and one of less than 100 still in existence World wide. You have a very nice looking van there, I bet it will be around for a long time yet. Cheers kiwijim

G'day again johnes, Here's a newspaper advertisement from October 1970, for a Sydney caravan dealer, about Glendale started building vans in Australia... I couldn't find any mention of the 'model' names of the various Glendale caravans made, but here's a newspaper advertisement from October 1976 for a few Glendale caravans for sale. Note the chassis numbers listed against the first three caravans...Chassis numbers 2996, 3289, and 3414...all new vans. You should be able to compare the chassis number on your van and see if it's higher or lower. Lower means earlier than 1976, and higher means later... cheers, Al.

Hey Johnes, i have the same Glendale, with a blue go fast stripe..... a 1980 model (according to the rego papers)... its unrego right now but when i did tow it, it was a real dream, i can hardly remember it being a problem, sat on the road great and always behaved it self. kitchen at the front, stove just inside the door to the left, lounge area in the middle of the van with a removable/adjustable table on the right hand side, bedroom at the rear, east west bed and cupboards at the rear......
im in the process of renovating ours as well, the old girl i have owned for 9yrs, it was on blocks on a property being used while they built there house, it recieved a knock from a tree just before i got it and now is showing signs of water damage,,,bugger...
i plan on turning the bed 90 degrees and updating the kitchen...and i have no idea about the lounge area...
im having a little difficulty in working out how the internal panelling is attached, hope fully i'll find some one here who can help.

G'day kezal, and welcome to the forum! ;D
I don't really know whether the Glendale vans were made with timber frames or aluminium frames. Obviously if they were timber, the panelling would be glued on. If they were aluminium, I guess there are two options: pop rivet the panelling on, or glue it on with stud adhesive.
Somebody else on this forum (can't remember who) recently had to remove their panelling (not a Glendale) and found it was glued with stud adhesive onto their ali frame. They stuck a chisel under the adhesive and it broke away from the frame fairly easily.
Hope this helps, cheers, Al.

Hi and welcome,
Looking forward to your exploits with the Glendale.
They sound like a very interesting van.
How does your chassis number compare with Als 1976 advert?
Cheers

What model is your Totota? On the tow bar plate there should be a kilogram rating? Do you know the weight of the Glendale? These are important issues these days, as overweight vehicles, & vans are high priority.

if the door frame s are in reasonable condition I used a sheet of 3mm aluminum sheet for the insert a 1.6mm would also work check out site in tech section will give you a ton of tips. do a service check IE look for leaks check chassis for rust breaks etc check suspension brakes and change bearings. seal outside then decide what you need to inside to suit you. maybe start a threat on here it will be interesting to see you project and follow its progress . There are a lot of people here that will help you on your way have fun
