G'day All, If you've never heard of a "Jones Dolly Wheel", here's a 1970 Viscount that had one fitted when new... The wheel was designed to take the ball weight off the back of the car, which means in theory you could tow a larger van without putting undue stress on the rear of your car. The Viscount above is a 19-footer. I can't recall seeing any other van from the 1970s with one of these fitted. They were more readily available in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I thought the company making these had folded sometime during the '60s, but perhaps they carried on later than I thought. As I've said above, this type of set-up was usually put on larger vans, however here's a picture of a 1960s van that's about 12ft long, with one of them fitted... There was another version of the same idea, but with two wheels spread apart. These were known as a Hutchinson Caravan Dolly. cheers, Al.

Hey Al
Nice pics.
Been around caravans all my life. I have never seen one.
They certainly look rather impressive.
When I was an awful lot younger I recall seeing a VW beetle with a 14 foot caravan hooked on the back, it had a pair of wheels connected to the draw bar that were connected to the tow bar. Cannot recall the name of the hitch. I always wondered how it travelling on the highway. Slow I guess.

Great seeing these pics of the dolly wheels - my grandfather was Herbert Jones, manufacturer of the dolly wheels, and owner of Jones' Springs. Thanks all.

My name is Greg T. My father worked with Herb Jones right thru the design and manufacture of the Dolly wheel. I was only 10 or 11 at the time. I knew your grandmother and Brenda very well. I only met Leela on a couple of occasions. I remember where they lived and with my mum and dad went there on many occasions .
I would love to chat with you. There mite be something I could pass on.
You can contact me on 0402783471 Looking forward to a chat.

We had a Viscount Duralvan when I was a kid in the 60's to early 80's. . It was fitted with a Jones Dolly Wheel. My parents towed that caravan around the country with 4 kids in tow. Some very happy memories and I've been on the lookout for a Jones Dolly Wheel ever since. It was great.
