Finally got a bit of time to do more on the Capricorn. After rearranging the carport by moving the van to the high clearence side so the van roof would clear – major exercise relocating all the car parts etc !!! The new floor has been sanded New lino with underlay fitted. The type of underlay we used is the same as under floating floors. It has foil on the underside for insulation and prevent rising damp. Here are a few pics of the remade kitchen cupboard. As you can see the draw fronts have not been made of fitted yet Thats about it for today Mausie

Well its all happening now. Joe is working like a man possessed. The two walls have finally been fitted and looking great ;D ;D ;D The front wall is being built here Now the rear wall How about this Lookin great We had to invade Master Builders because we had emptied Bunnings stock of "straight" Meranti If you wanted to build a boat or something that needed twisted timber well Bunnings has heaps of it. By the way - Master Builders also had heaps of bent and twisted timber but after some help from a staff member we managed to find a few staightens. Tomorrow is another day - we should have the back wall done Mausie & (Joe)

G'day mausie, Joe sure IS working like a man possessed! It's actually looking a bit like a caravan again! ;D ;D Obviously there's been a lot of fiddly jobs to get to this stage, so well done for persevering, and congratulations for what you've both achieved so far. Any rest for poor ol' Joe over Xmas-New Year?? cheers, Al.

Hi Al Thanks for the encouragement - Joe needed that Our local Caravan club is going to Boorowa for a few days either side of New Year's eve. We (I ) want to go - Joe wants to stay home and work on the Capricorn I think he deserves a rest - don't you?? Today we finished the back of the van internal lining. I think tomorrow we are starting on the overhead cupboards ;D ;D ;D Oh! nearly forgot - A friend who is doing up a 60s van purchased a donor van for parts mainly for the aluminium - it came with an annex and old wooden poles. He gave it to us because it is for our size van ;D ;D and it also comes with a skirt to go around the bottom of the van - all looks to be in excellent order. I think our friend said payment currency is in "Crownies" - Joe said he understands what that means cheers Mausie

G'day mausie, Well, you guys certainly HAVEN'T been idle! By gees the van is starting to fall into place VERY nicely! A Stanley laser level??? Cheating!! ;D ;D I know what you mean about not having enough clamps. This photo was taken when I was building the new walls for the current vintage van project... Can never have too many clamps! You guys are going great. Pedal to the metal now, ay?!! cheers, Al.

Hi Al
Yes pedal to the metal. :-) :-)
Today we took the roof off the old frame to see what shape the ceiling timbers are.
We found we have to get the rest of the ceiling up now before we can go ahead with the rest of the overhead cupboards. As you know the cupboards are attached to the roof and walls.
Man that old 4 seasons hatch was hard to remove :-( :-(
Do you know where we can get new 50mm internal trim for the 4 season hatch?
Most places we have checked out only sell trim for the modern plastic style hatch :-(
Cheers Mausie & Joe

G'day mausie, Give Barnes Caravans a ring in Lansvale, sth. west of Sydney. They can apparently still roll aluminium cladding profiles in the white acrylic, which would make me think they have flat sheet aluminium available. They might have the means of making new ones up for you. I've never dealt with them myself, but a fair few people on various caravan forums mention them with positive comments. The old man used to build caravans back when your Joe was playing cowboys and indians with his older brothers , but now the Barnes children have taken over and operate just selling spares, doing repairs, etc. I don't have the contact details at my fingertips, but google their name and you'll find them. cheers, Al.

G'day mausie, That's good news! Did you actually end up contacting Barnes, or did you discover via another means that Camec had them? cheers, Al.

Hi Al I was surfing the net and thought I would Google interior trim 4 seasons hatch. I noticed Camec had trim for the modern 4 season hatches so decided I would ring them. And would you believe they had a couple in stock for the old style hatch. ;D ;D ;D Joe used to belong to the Australian Air League in his younger years. He and young Barnesy were in the same Squadron in Blacktown and have know each other for yonks. Barnes is supplying the aluminium cladding for our van and has been very helpful. Mausie

Hi all, More progress on the Capricorn. We don't know how we managed because it has been so hot for everyone not just us. And people say Canberra is cold. We had 39 deg the other day but Joe and I still went out and worked on the van ;D ;D Well the overhead cupboards are up now. no doors yet but they will come. Here we are starting on the right hand side centre overhead Cupboard section up and slider fitted. We were worried we might break the original Perspex but gently gently in it went And here we have the rear section in. We have the rear and left side in but no photos to post yet We have started on the wardrobe and should have that built by next week hopefully ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D all for now Happy Australia Day to all Mausie

Greetings all We have been quiet but busy working on the Capricorn ;D ;D ;D It now has all the overhead cupboards finished (no doors yet though ) Today we finished the wardrobe. The runners for the wardrobe drawers are in. We have still to make the drawers. Joe even let me help assemble the frame for the drawers ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D No photos yet - all the better when you see them Next job will be to install the dinette seats. We rolled out the annex we scored for the princely sum of one slab of crownies ;D It looks to be in great condition for its age and came with the skirt that goes on the bottom of the van and it also has the old wooden poles - bargain !!! ;D Well that's all for now Cheers Mausie

Hi Pete Yes we want the van to look like it did when built more or less There will be some hidden and perhaps some not hidden changes. But all in all we want to preserve some of the Capricorn heritage where we can I guess that comes from restoring our cars and keeping them original ;D Thanks for the encouragement Are you happy with your van now that it is finished? Is there anything you would change if you had a chance the press "rewind"? Cheers Mausie

Mausie, Just back from amid-week trip to Clare Valley winelands. Van was nice and comfortable and no hassles mostly. Need a tie-up point for pooch and storage is always a compromise but learnig to travel lightly. Was well worth fitting all the wiring for led lights all over the place as it really is convenient to read and cook etc. Outside hatch access is a good thing for barbie. Only fold down Ikea bed a bit restrictive as we cant pack boxes underneath like most vans, but sleep wise nice and comfy with memory foam matress. We were placed in a site with a great big neon pole next to us that stayed lit all night, shining thru my fancy skylight- very irritating! But skylight wide open funnels cool breeze into van. Capricorn with so many overhead lockers sure is convenient! Attachments:

Pete sounds like you only have some minor adjustments for the pooch Otherwise all is good. We have now finished building the front dinette seats and can now position the kitchen cupboard. That will lead on to building the two beds and bedside cabinet ;D ;D ;D ;D Today we went out to the Multicultural Festival where Joe's Pipe band entertained the public with Scottish tunes We then got back into Capricorn mode Purchased some ply to make the dinette table We are getting there slowly Cheers Mausie

Had a great win - I found two near new single bed innerspring mattresses on Gumtree Joe only had to remove two rows of springs from each for them to fit our van. Great hey!!! Joe calls single beds "unfriendly" - I agree with him but in these smaller vans singles are heaps better than those where one of us has to sleep against the wall. Bye for now Mausie

G'day Mausie, Sounds like a great win on the mattresses. And yes, I agree that the poor bugger who gets to sleep on the wall side of the double bed is disadvantaged with the cold wall (it was always me ). Even with the insulation in the wall cavity, the internal panelling still felt cold to touch on those cold nights. I ended up rolling up and stuffing a woollen blanket down between the edge of the bed and the wall to try and keep the cold out. Two singles is better, but an island bed is best! ;D ;D cheers, Al.

Happy days again Our nephew, a sparky, is coming over on Sunday to wire up our 240v on the Birdie Deluxe - YES!!!!! This has stopped us from making progress on the outer cladding etc. In the mean time we have been collecting bits an pieces since reading the posts on LED lighting. We now have 3 x 12v LED fittings (60 LEDs each) to go into the oyster lights. Only $39 each. And a neat one to fit over the sink hidden behind a pelmet with 36 LEDs Joe is still looking at how to convert the original reading bedside lamps to 12v LED. He bought a nice car radio to hide in a cupboard but it has USB as well as the other usual CD and radio features, so I pinched it for our Jayco Now Joe has the Jayco radio for the Capricorn We are getting excited about the van starting to take shape now. Mausie (& Joe)

Bummer!! It rained all morning - electricals did not get done. Next attempt won't be for another two weeks Anyway the day was not a total waste - Joe has finished reducing the size of one of the inner spring mattresses we picked up (2nd hand unused for $50) and is now working on the second one. it is a bigger job than we thought First we unpicked the edge binding and removed the quilted mattress outside covering. Then once we could get at the innersprings Joe removed one row of springs along the length then took out two rows from one end. He then had to cut the perimeter wire to size and mig-weld it together. Next job will be to cut down to the new size the quilted outside and the under padding. The covering then has to be hog ringed to the springs and top and sides hand sewn. Takes hours It would be nice if Joe could just put it into his industrial sewing machine Anyway it should be worth it in the end. Mausie

G'day mausie, Commiserations on the weather interfering with the electrical job. It's a pain when you organise something and the weather doesn't play fair. Good to hear that Joe is multiskilled and can switch to another job easily, even modifying mattresses, no less! Sometimes it feels like you're taking two steps backwards and only one forwards, but hang in there and it will come together nicely. It's certainly looking good so far! cheers, Al.
