Hi, Not sure if this worked or not, the posting I mean. My wife Karen and I are travelling around Oz in a new caravan. We have seen some amazing old vans in our travels and have just purchased a Travel Home of unknown vintage. It is in good condition with a annexe. We've set it up next to us for our son to stay in at the Maryborough Showgrounds. After we leave here it will be going into a shed awaiting our return. Can't seem to find out much about Travel Home caravans and was wondering if someone could help with year of manufacture etc.. It really only needs a bit of a clean up and a small ding knocked out the top rear. I've added a picture (I hope) We previously owned a 1950 or so Carapark Hunter that I sold way to cheap, $300, a couple of years ago. Just found this forum and am enjoying it immensely. Cheers, Ross. G'day Ross, Nice old Travel Home you've got there! ;D By coincidence, I've just been trawling through the Trading Post website, and came across another Travel Home there. Round about the same age and size as yours, with an asking price of $5700 ono. Your van looks to be from the earlier part of the 1970s, having the old-style box lid hatch cover, and push-out windows. So it fits somewhere in the 1970 to 1973 range. Travel Home were made in Canterbury Rd., Kilsyth, Victoria. In a 1974 magazine, Travel Home were described as "high class caravan construction specialising in larger models, but with good range of smaller units. Waiting list for special orders." Looks like people were prepared to wait to get a high quality van back then, so you should reap the rewards of that quality all these years later. You say you sold a Carapark Hunter for $300 a few years ago??!! Sheesh! Hope you made up for it with a good deal on the Travel Home! ;D ;D cheers, Al.

Hi, Thanks for the comments, My son and 2 children spent their first night in the Travel Home last night. Believe it or not it was 8 degrees in Maryborough last night so we all needed a doona. I agree that the Travel Home appears to be a well made van, on looking under the seats I noticed that the floor appears to be made from tongue and groove hardwood. There is a little bit of rot on one side of the hatch frame. It is only one edge and a easily replaceable piece of timber. It has a timber frame but I'm wondering if the frame could also be hardwood. The reason I'm saying this is when replacing the broken plastic clips that the annexe attaches to on the side of the van, the screws felt like they were screwing into something a bit more substantial than old pine. Would the blue perspex corner windows be original? I will find some pics of our Carapark and put them on the forum. It was a larger Hunter with a bath in the front. The lady I bought it from purchased it new in the early 1950s. I sold it to a Hot Rod owner from Hervey Bay. I hope it is being looked after. We are travelling in a 2007 Jayco 23' van and are hopeing to do the lap over the next 2 years, I'm always on the lookout for old vans, much to the anoyance of my wife. It's amazing what you see. Old vans that are still being used as they were intended. At the moment there is a Vic couple staying here in an old 1970s Millard that they are travelling in. Good to see. Still working my way through this great forum. It's pub crawl day here in Maryborough today, so we might go and help them attempt to retain the world record. Cheers, Ross van.

G'day again, Ross I've been looking through the information I have on my computer for Travel Home vans. In 1970, the logo/sticker in advertisements looked like this... Note in the description it says "aluminium construction", so the reason it might have seemed harder to screw into is because of the aluminium framework. (Bonus! ;D) In mid-1971, the logo changed to look like this... Here are a couple of vans with that style of sticker on them. Both of these have wind-out windows (the little plastic brackets on the outside of the window frame are the give-away ), which makes them later models than yours. It's hard to tell whether these vans have the Starlight 4-seasons hatch or not, which would determine whether they are pre-1975 or after... Then sometime later in the 1970s, the logo was changed again to look like this... This van definitely has the 4-seasons hatch, and wind-out windows, so this model would be 1975 or later. Note that the painted colour stripes on the sides of these vans didn't seem to change much over the years. The van with the blue stripes above seems to be the odd one out. Based on the limited number of Travel Homes I've seen photos of, I wouldn't think the blue wrap-around perspex was original on your van. Can't say I've seen that colour on ANY van with wrap-around windows, so I'm inclined to think someone has changed them on your van at some point. (Or do they have a tint film on them that's gone blue?). I can't see the Travel Home sticker on your van clearly in your photos, but I'm assuming it's the same as the one from the mid-1971 time period. That narrows your van's age down a bit, to being from mid-1971 up to around the 1973 mark. cheers, Al.

G'day again Ross, By coincidence, there's a 20-footer Travel Home on ebay at the moment... ebay listing link: Travel HomeListed with a Buy It Now price of $7500, or Make Offer. Has had a fair bit of "refurbishment" done inside. Located in Rockingham, WA. Maybe you can check it out when you get round to that part of OZ. ;D cheers, Al.

Hi, Well we are about to head of on our Travelhomes first trip tomorrow. New wheels, bearings and tyres fitted. Maryborough to Brisbane, all of 280 kms, should be fine we hope. We have our Jayco at our daughters place at Beachmere at the moment and I noticed an old Franklin a couple of houses away last week when we got here. Last weekend it was obviously sold as it is now sitting in the side yard with wheels and axel removed awaiting replacement and removal. The house a couple of doors away from it has just put a big sign on the front of an old poptop that says "THIS CARAVAN IS NOT FOR SALE". My son is bringing the Travelhome down from Marybough tomorrow. Cheers, Ross.

I have just got my first van, as you can see by the picture this too is a 70's model Travel Home. I would love to find some more info about it. I know it was puchased new by my late grandparents. It is basically mint cond. it has a small amount of rot in one corner but nothing that i cant fix in a couple of hours. i have used this van only a couple of times, and although quiet small, with the annex fitted provides pefectly for my family. I am looking forward to getting it out this summer for some good use... Anyone with any info, i would love to hear about it.... Cheers

the blue or more like purple front corner perspex was on my travel home was the first of the tinted perspex used before viscount did it but then again travel home back in the early seventies were considered the mercedes of the lot,its outside box chassis riggers and angle iron made the sides of the van a lot stronger than what viscount made i custom made the same outside steel chassis components for my 22 foot milllard last year simply for the added strengthexcept used 2 angle iron pieces seem welded together giving me a 80 mm c section which i then bolted to the aluminum walls whilst the ally skin was off design idea came directly from the travel home chassis. the major structual fault in millard and york was the pop rivets to c section steel coroding out thus letting the ally walls fall off in there old age. electrolisis aluminum to steel over 30 year period is the main cause for concern in this timeframe of van as they have reached that age now and serious owners should have these chasis components completely inspected for the problem

we recently picked up a Carola 17'6" van which is remarkably similar to the Travel Home DeLuxe with red striping in this thread. Does anyone know the history of Carola? They were located in lonsdale St Dandenong Vic in 1969/70

Hi, We bought a Travelhome Caravan 19'6" in Albury about 1973
We were very pleased with it, the back section was the bedroom with full wordrobes and dressing table, the front section had a full sized stove a good fridge, sink, table that could be made into 3/4 bed and also a couch that could also be a bed, so a 5 bed van, we lived in it for 2-3 years, and towed it many a mile, we finally sold it to get money for deposit on house.
We now have a Viscount Nippa, about 11' long with door in the back, and it suits us very well now that children grown, married and just us left.

Does the info on Page 1 of this thread help in any way?
As far as I'm aware, a lot of the old brands have been resurrected in recent years, and have no connection to the original manufacturers.
Do you know what the chassis number is on your van?
cheers, Al.

Hello to all,
Just found this forum whilst looking for some historical info on TravelHome vans. Very heartwarming and refreshing that the passion for things such as these Vans is still out there in this world where it seems not many care ("ditch it,...nobody will want it,... not worth wasting time on it,...")
I have a 4 berth (2 x doubles) with annexe 'TravelHome DeLuxe' by "Carola Caravans Pty Ltd., 56 Lonsdale St., Dandenong (Vic) TEL: 792 1731" that will soon be advertised "in the usual places". It's been a great family icon and we would love it to go to someone who really cares and would breathe new life back into it. We believe it was purchased secondhand somewhere early to mid '70's. It'll need a bit of work on a few leaks & registering but has a little used (virtually new) annexe.
I'll try and get some images together but thought there might be an enthusiast out there that would have an interest in it first before it goes out to the 'mass market' in a week or so. Its shape (and i think the annexe) is identical to "rossjdaniel" first post images except it has faded green bands along the sides.
Cheers, Al2

G'day terry, The wire colours you've described are nothing like the proper colour codes. To see the proper wiring colours for the various tow plugs, and the terminal position for each wire, click on this link: trailer wiring diagramsYou would have to get a circuit tester tool and try and trace which of your wires go to which lights. Good luck with it. cheers, Al.
