Toilette Cassette - Cleaning and Maintenance
Hopefully, your caravan, motorhome or 5th wheeler supplier provided you with a manual for the type of toilet cassette you have installed. The manual will have instructions for your model portable toilet cassette. If not, some supplier websites may have an instruction manual you can download.
The Thetford Cassette manual recommends the waste tank seal, the automatic pressure release vent seal and the cap seal to be cleaned regularly. If you are regular travellers or living full time in your RV monthly cleaning should sufficient.
Thetford say never to use household cleaners (bleach, solvents or other powerful cleaning agents) as they may cause permanent damage to the seals and other toilet components.
Rub the seals and valve blade with olive oil and then wipe them over with a piece of cloth or toilet paper. Thetford say never use Vaseline or any vegetable oil. Use only olive oil.
If the toilet cassette is not be used for some time, after emptying, clean and coat the seals lightly with olive oil before storing away.
And last, but not least, wash your hands properly after emptying or maintaining the toilette cassette.

What chemicals do people use? I'm only new to this, and have only used the Thetford brand stuff in the rinse water and in the tank, and it seems to work very well. I've read that people use things like NapiSan and fabric softener.

It will be interesting to see some of the responses.. We use the Aldi brand "Di-san" same as Napisan, there are a number of generic ones around, a lot like the Coles No name one as well. This is the mix I use and will empty the loo no less then 3 days and if at a van park will do it daily, 1 cap of power to 1ltr water mixed till dissolved and pour into the bottom part of the toilet - not the top, some people use warm water as this will dissolved the powder quicker. In the top tank we only use straight water.
Do not mix the powder with hot or boiling water. We try to only go #1's in the loo but if somewhere where there is no loo's around well - you have to go. Plus no need for any special toilet paper either .
That is what we do and no smell and I have the privilege of having to empty the thing

Well there you go. Seems the nappy products are just the same as Odour b Gone. Just look for 35% Sodium Percarbonate. I was led to believe the nappy products were bleach oriented?

Waay back in the cloth nappy days of our first born, we moved into a place with septic (1981) We discovered two kinds of Napi San one with bleach and the other septic safe, down the track with global restrictions of what goes down a sink/ waste, chlorine based solutions are banned or frowned upon as no waste treatment plants really remove any chlorine, apart from random sunlight in settlement tanks but only the very top layer, due to turbidity.

Vanish list 7 different versions of napisan powder on their website. I haven't bothered digging through their material safety data sheets to see how they differ, but I would guess that its in the comparative amounts of Sodium Carbonate and Hydrogen Peroxide - so oxygen bleaches rather than chlorine.
They have an odour killing version...

Just get the Coles/Woolies/Aldi "no name" brand, it is what all the nomads are using and I'm sure they have tried and tested everything out there
