Well, hello to you all in caravan land. I have been searching for info on my van for a while now and finally think i`ve found a great place to have a chat and maybe,,,, just maybe find out a little bit more about the ol` van i have sitting in my shed. It was regisitered as a 76 Model, there were old rego slipd in the cupboard when i got it so i just asumed that was correct. Fully loaded it weighs in at 1020kg`s and tows beautifully behind the patrol. I hooked up an anderson plug to the drawbar and ran the cabling through the chassis and up the inside of the cupboard to a 4 plug socket on the outside of the cupboard near the bed. It`s now easy to run the dvd player for the kids, have a night light over the bed ( for the missus of course) and run the main 12v lights when we go bush. When we go to a place with 240v, then it`s even easier! I`ve resprayed the drawbar, fitted new tyres, and in the process of restoring the rest of it. It`s going to get an "original" respray and stickers fitted. I might even go as far as replacing the Skyline Caravans sticker as well. I`ll see about that one, hehe. Here`s a couple of pics, i`ll get some inside shots of it to show soon. Hope you all like it.

Hi Gary, no it wasn`t me there, it would`ve been great to see another one of these as i`ve been searching for others in oz but nothing. Great to hear you`ve seen another around. I`m presently respraying it, all original, i`ll post pics once completed. I`ve got to find somewhere that does canvas to match, any suggestions anyone? ?

Hello Darren My name is Kerry.I have recently come back from Broken Hill ( I live in the Barossa Valley S.A.)towing a 14 foot Chesney that my dad gave me.I have never towed a van before, did'nt know what to expect, but this van towed really well behind my express van. This van was made in 1978,has two single beds and weighs 740kgs.Unfortunately dad stored the van in the open,so it needs a bit of work done on it.The interior is in really good nick.We have just had the canvas replaced, but they used vinyl for the job, apparently this is the go now,it came from Melbourne. While the van was being repaired the repair guy told my dad that there were only 4 of these vans made, not sure if that is true.I should have it in pretty good nick by the end of winter,so the wife and I will be doing quite a few trips to the york peninsula. That's all for now,all the best with the canvas. Cheers Kerry

Hi, We had one of these parked next to us at Hervey Bay over the Anzac weekend. The only differance was it was not a poptop and I am sure it was bigger. A lady from Nambour owns it. She bought it new. It was in great condition and I do have her phone number, but for some reason I did not take a pic of it. I told her if ever she wanted to sell it to let me know, she leaves it in storage at Hervey Bay and has it towed to the Park when she wants to use it. Is it rare enough to follow up with? Cheers, Ross.

Well,, hello again, the paint finally went on this weekend. Its looking a fair bit better than before, also there have a few interior mods done since the last time i posted here. Open the cupboard doors now and an interior light comes on in the cupboard ( all the cupboards ) great at night. Clearly see what`s in there. Front lounge storage doors and pullout draws. Checker Plate across the front as a stone shield. Strengthened and straightened axle. Raised the van 2 inches. New tyres, Set up the double bed so it lifts up ( gas assisted ) Led lighting is to come here`s a few pics of it now,,,,,, Hope this wasn`t too many, hope you like it. See ya, Darren

Nosey!!! ,,,,,, naaaah not at all I have painted cars before and went through all the dramas using acrylic paints. on a car,,,, that`s ok,,, but on the van i just went down to Bunnings and bought a 4L pot of white enamel and a 4L pot of enamel thinners. This sprayed really well and i did about a 15% mix of enamel thinners to the rest paint. I kept the coats thin, and no runs to be had. Better this way, i left about 1 Hr between coats or until the last coat went tacky.(sticky to touch) I`ll post up a pic of what i used. I should be using one of those water trap bowl things on the compressor but hey, when there`s not much time nor $ i do with what i`ve got. Turned out alright. Thanks for the compliment, i wanted to get to Canungra this weekend but family matters have me doing other things. Cheers

Hi darrenh I have never seen one of these in the flesh, only photos. They are rather unique. Yours is certainly looking good. I would never have considered using "house hold" enamel paint on the outside of a caravan. Keep the photos coming. Bobt

Just bought this Chesney playmate 85 model, I can’t find much info or pics of originals especially the interior, wonder why it’s so hard they would have advertised them? Interested in seeing anyone else’s and wonder how rare they are?

Hi Chesney 85 and welcome. Your van is about 1976-77,Chesney closed in 1977-78. They were made as a pop top and an 18x8 single axle caravan and at the time had the biggest wind out windows for the front and back ever made!I don’t think too many were made as it was close to their closing down, but they still come up for sale occasionally. Enjoy your van Cheers hughdeany
