Hello out there just got back from 3 fabulous weeks away in the Hunter in the north east corner of Tassie.
If you are planning a trip to our wonderful island this is an area you should not miss if you are into wonderful free camping spots, coastal scenery, clean white beaches, surf fishing, fossicking, bush walking, trout fishing, wine and cheese, mining history, etc etc. Most of the roads are sealed if a little windy. Those that aren't can be a little rough but the Hunter survived so I am sure you can!
Get in touch if you would like more info will try and post some photos in the next week or so.
Cheers TT

I thought I might post a series of photos over the next few weeks showing some of the places we stayed and some of the places we visited. Overall we free camped except for 9 nights spent at a place called Myrtle Park about 40 ks out of Launceston on the Tasman Highway heading toward Scottsdale. Those 9 nights cost me a total of $27!!!! That's right $3 per night for hot showers and access to water and 80 acres of beautiful park land with ample camping space for all sorts of rigs. See photos below. Our first night was spent on the banks of the Elizabeth River at Campbell Town in the central midlands of Tassie. A nice free camping spot right in the town. No toilets or water so thank god for the portaloo. The next day we travelled through Launceston on our way to Low Head Pilot Station and Maritime Museum. Well worth a visit. Whilst there we got chatting to the curator about caravaning and our trip and our desire to free camp. He suggested we camp at the Batman Bridge Park. The cost of staying in the local caravan park was $35 per night!!! So off to the bridge where we found a pleasant spot by the river. Not a lot of flat ground, a bit tight for bigger rigs, one star toilets and water available but only from a tap that would fill a kettle. It is also a little noisy as the log trucks start rolling across the bridge from about 4 am. However, a good base from which to visit all the attractions of the upper Tamar River Valley which we did over the next two days. View from the deck of the bridge. Beaconsfield gold mine and museum is interesting and a visit to Greens Beach is must. Lots of lovely country side and interesting little towns and views of the river. Then to Myrtle Park. Where we spent nine nights and explore all the attractions between Launceston and in and around Scottsdale. Those pictures in the next post. Beaconsfield Gold Mine Greens Beach (there is a CP here right behind the beach) Myrtle Park

Hey There T.T. Now you've done it, We just might have to team up with Bob & Jacqui for a return trip down your way, Ya can't have all that beaut scenery to your-self, all the time. ;D Great photos, and they sure bring back some memories of a very pleasant holiday. We camped not 50mt from where you camped under the Batman bridge, Like you found, the never ending flow of logging trucks made it a rather sleepless night. Keep the pic's coming, we're enjoying the ride and it's a lot cheaper than last time. ;D ;D cheers kiwijim

OK folks here are some more pics. All these places and others were visited from our base at Myrtle Park. First stop Mt Barrow the turn off to which is just 14ks back down the road toward Launceston from the park. Steep windy and rocky road especially near the top(aren't they always) and definitely not some where to take the van. 4wd was definitely handy coming down. and at the top.... and the view....... On our first day trip we visited the Bridstow Lavender farm and Bridport on the north east coast doing an nice drive along the north east coast back toward Launceston taking in Pipers River and the lush farm land around Lilydale. On another day trip we headed inland through several back roads taking in some lovely moutain scenery and coming out at the top of the Ringarooma River Valley Continuing on down the road from here to Ledgerwood where the wonderful timber tree carvings are located. A nice spot to stop for lunch. Another day out was into Scottsdale for some retail therapy and to visit the Forest Information Centre. Unusual building but well worth a visit as it has heaps of touristy type info and a nice coffee shop. We did some other day trips from the park as well one of which was into Launceston for some emergency dentistry and you guessed it more retail therapy. We revisited Mt Barrow again just before we left the park this time to do the forest industry history drive. If you are into the history of the timber industry and the people involved this is well worth a half day. This is just one of the many photos I took. An old tramway for getting the logs down off the mountain. Stay tuned more to come. TT
