I wanted something like a teardrop to tow behind the Mg well the other half though i deserved surprise and bought this Wartz (which needs work in the frame) which when loaded is going to be too much for the old girl. so still looking for a nice old teardrop. we are reparing the Wartz and have already had a short trip in it but now to do the real repairs to the frame timber. So i'll soon be loking for a larger tow car. good excuse methinks for another toy. In the meantime i am in two minds as to whether to "do up and modify" the old truck we have. it was bought to aid in the restoration of our house and has carted literally tonnes of rock, and building material carted away tonnes of of rubbish. (160 year old stone house) what do think, worth the effort? regards Don

G'day Don, I've fixed the photos up in your post. ;D I reckon that truck would be worth spending a bit of money on. It'd pull just about any caravan you would want to have! The only problem with towing a teardrop behind the truck would be that you'd always be wondering if it was still there! You'd certainly never know it was on the back!! cheers, Al.

Thanks for fixing the pics Al. Now i wonder what the biggest motor is that i could fit in Bertha (the truck). She's is a bit slow on hills but does much the same speed empty as full.

The old oil burners were never much chop on the hills. More the tortoise than the hare! Fit some comfy seats in the truck and it'd have to be about the best tow vehicle ever made. That tray and the roof racks would give you the ability to carry all manner of toys! I'm thinking tinny and kayak, pushbike (or motorbike!) and all the fishing gear to fill the gaps. Oh yeah.....

Well did a trial run (just up the mountain and back) with the caravan behind the truck. No problem. So have started making a list of what needs repair on her. Might leave the tray for a while though as i have quite a few loads of sandstone and slate to pick up yet. Saw a Wolseley 6/90 on ebay the other day. Made a phone call to the vendor. Runs well and very little rust for its age. So off we go to have a look. What a bloody heap it was, both sills and backs of all four guards imediately obvious, just full of rust, and other bog patches in odd spots. Incorrect rear vission mirrors and lights. Bent bumpers, rotten roof lining and poorly covered seats are just the start of a list of ailements. So obviously didn't buy it. Wouldn't it be nice if more people on ebay were a tad more honest in their descriptions.

Hey greedy, thats one sweet looking teardrop, well done. As atog says would love to see some interior shots. Looked at your thread, i am truly impressed. Did a six hour drive last night after work, looked at a potential tow car. Loved the shape, its a little lacking tho - no motor or gearbox. To me its a bit expensive for the condition and its just above what the other half will let me send. (which truth to be told isn't much) so am now negotiating. Your thread has given me the urge to build a teardrop for the MG after i finish the Wartz, which might just get me into trouble, but lets see. To be honest i'm getting sick of working on the house, its been every weekend and most nights after work for the last 13 months. Need to play with something else for a while.

Hey greedy, well done. great teardrop. Well i'v gone and done something to disturb the other half. Getting a new tow car more capable than the MG. I've agreed a price on a 1947 Hudson Super 6. Its 2 owners from new, but hasn't moved since 1973. Very complete and somewhat rare with a complete cloth interior. No serious rust and just a few spares. (engine, gearbox. diff, bumpers, doors, body panels and more) So i'v just sold the 2 litre Kombi and the last of my splitty parts and the last of my Wolseley stuff. Only problem is i've now got to pick it all up from the other side of Melbourne, wish me luck, not yet sure the best way to o that. I'll post some pics soon.

well what can ya say it starts with a bit of rust on the head of a small screw.when you remove it to replace it,you see a bit more rut on the frame where the screw was ,it's about this time you decide to take an small panel of to replace the bit of steel that you had seen, AND SO IT BEGINS happy hunting and may the god of restorers be with you

LOL yeh, put a few tonne on my truck and i only get about 50KPH out of the old girl up the hill. So you'd understand why i'd like a straight eight for the new toy. (apart from i love that purring sound of the straight eights). Was working in the front yard on Tuesday avo and saw a few old bondwood and 60's vans go by on the freeway and a lot of really nice old cars, must have been something on. You know what i have noticed lately, none of the restored older vehicles seem to break down on the hill, you get a few 80's thingies expire but there have been quite a few Mercedes 4WD's on the side of the road.

The body is by Ruskin, with a special interior built for the then Lord Mayor of Melbourne. So rubbers shouldn't be a problem. I am somewhat lucky as the running gear and body from the firewall forward is the same as the yank 47 hudson. I am also advised today that the borg warner overdrive used on most of the yank stuff of the period will fit straight in as it is what hudson supplied as an optional extra.

A short update. I've cleaned checked and fitted the highway ratio diff. Taken the heads off all of the motors and chosen the one to restore. Put new brushes in the starter motor and given it a tart up. Ordered all of the brake parts I need and have started on a rebuild of the fuel pump. I want to send the spare steering wheel for pearling, has anyone recommendations on anyone how does a good job.

Well finally sorted the pics. These are from when we got the Hudson home. Not going to touch the dash except the radio. Found an original receipt for the parts car ($50) and the last registration cert in the glovebox. Lots of legroom and easy access. Don

Thanks Greedy, we love the look as well. Apart from a clean we are leaving the body as she is. only have a little rust in the wheel well in the boot and a small 50c piece patch in the floor on the passengers side. Lots to do mechanically. Have just got the spare bumpers back after a rechrome they look great, very happy. Waiting on the head to come back to get one of the sixes ready to reinstall, but still quietly looking for a straight eight.

, G'day inncrafers, That's a really nice old Hudson you have there. Is that a Richards body? I've done a bit of research into Aussie Slopers as I've just bought a 1939 Pontiac Sloper with Holden body. It has no real rust, just a little surface rust on the body and chassis and is in running condition. She runs as smooth as any modern car, drops no oil or water and blows no smoke. I was looking forward to taking some photos of her when I restore her next to that de Havilland dH84 Dragon that crashed last month near Kilcoy in Queensland as they are/were both maroon. I'm also into old aeroplanes and go to as many airshows as I can get to. Last weekend I attended the Catalina festival on Lake Macquarie at the former wartime Rathmines RAAF Base. Along with a Catalina amphibian and other water borne aircraft there were a number of old cars including the last surviving '39 Oldsmobile convertible of 10 built that year with the dickie seat in the boot. It is also maroon and in beautiful almost original condition. My Pontiac Sloper is one of 3 survivors out of the 85 built in 1939 and in original unrestored condition. They sure don't build 'em like they used to. Cheers, Ross.

Hey Ross
I love all mechanical things that are old. Just caint find the space or money to keep one of everything.
My wife shudders every time we stop in a new town. First thing I go looking for is the airfield. We have discovered a number of musems with collectibles over the years.
Now how about sharing a photo or 2 of your new wheels.
