Hi Kiwi Jim, There is also a place 12 kilometres from Margaret River town on a sheep farm called Big Valley. They charge $75 per person weekly rate for an umpowered site. Hot showers BBQ's fridges etc. Space between campers. Friendly people. Great spot. Ask at the tourist information centre in Margaret River for further details. Cheers Shelley

Howdy silvershell, Welcome to the Forum, That Farm you mentioned sounds like a good deal, plenty of space and hopefully, no ankle-biters to disturb the peace. ;D ;D Thanks for the info, I'll certainly check that out when we head down there next month. Hopefully it's still standing after the recent Bush fires that ravaged the area. Cheers kiwijim

Hi Jim, I just read this old post and need to tell you about my favourite spot. Cambray Pool, about 13km north of Nannaup on the Vasse Hwy. Turn west onto Cambray Road and about 4 km of slightly rough and sandy track will bring you to an old railway siding among tall Jarrah and Marri trees beside a deep fresh billabong which I reckon is one of the very best fresh water swimming holes in southern WA. Its an expansive site with many shady flat spots but no facilities. There are good mountain bike tracks branching off and a good ride to Workman pool and Barabup pool. The last few times I went there it was deserted but its a big enough place to find some privacy, hence its popularity with hippies and nudists, if that rocks your boat. This is a very special place to me and encapsulates what I think is the perfect spot: seclusion, fresh water and beautiful forest. I've lived in Tasmania for the last 4 and a half years and am planning a trip back to WA next October in our 75 millard which I'll put up a post about soon. Cambray is definitely on my must do list. I hope you can check it out as I would like an update as to what its like now. Paul.

Howdy Paul,
Thanks for posting that info on the Camp site, That's the sort of place we long to find, some-where where the ankle biters are absent and there is heaps of silence.
The local scenery ( Nudists ) sounds interesting, better watch who we invite to Happy Hour, the Missis may get the wrong idea.
You didn't say who owns the land, ? is it National Park or State Forest ?
We will definitely be checking into this place and will give you an update after we have had a gander at it.
I think coming from Tassie, you will have to go a long long way to beat your scenery, we were down that way a few years back now, It wouldn't have been hard to stay there, that's for sure.
Cheers kiwijim ;D

I'm glad you're keen to see it, Kiwijim, I don't think you will be disappointed. Its state forest all around so no rules or fees. Tasmanian scenery is great but there's nothing like a freshwater swim on a hot day which doesn't happen much here, and thats ok by me. WA heat is the main reason I fled to cooler climes. I'll try to post a couple of Cambray pics tomorrow. Paul.

Ok, I'll try to post some pics for the first time. This is the main entry to the swimming hole. The submerged log on the right can be walked down into the water. This pic was taken exactly 5 years ago as I was preparing this camper to drive to Tasmania. This is the main access to the water hole but the place was deserted so we had it to ourselves. Just one prime example of the many majestic Marri trees around the site. I can't wait to get back here this time next year, I have only positive memories of this place. Paul.

G'day Paul,
You are only one step away from mastering Photobucket. ;D
The code you copy and paste is the one in the last field (the bottom field), when you hover your mouse over the photo in your album.
The code will look like this (but without the asterisk at the start):
[*IMG]http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b638/FernTreeHillbilly/cambraypool.jpg[/IMG]
I've modified your links in your post above, so that they now show up as actual photos.
cheers, Al.

Howdy Paul, Thanks for the Pictures, It looks like a good quiet spot for sure, I've Googled the area but I can't find the water hole, I think you said it's about four "K" from the turn off from the Vasse Hwy, Now if you are heading West, after turning off, do you turn off the road to the camp site on the left or right hand side. ? Another thing, we have a 22' van, would there be room to get the van into the camp site and turn it around ? The van is full height with an roof air-con , so we will have to allow at least 3m in height for head room. Cheers kiwijim

Hi Kiwijim, try this link, it has better directions and a satelite map with the waterhole marked. www.fbwa.iinet.net.au/cambray.htmlIf you turn right into the main camping area there is a lot of room to turn a van around. The road in might be a bit overgrown now but you should be able to get in there. If you still have that Nissan Patrol I see in your photos you'll be right but I would recommend you do a day trip down there first just to suss out the access. Let us know, I was going to ask my brother to have a look and report back but I would like to hear from you regarding the caravan access. Paul.

P.S Jim, I just realised the link I posted is for a nudists website. That was unintentional, it just happened to have the best info I could find. Well at least you know there will be privacy there!

There is a new FREE caravan / camping site at KWOLYIN near SHACKLETON in the Bruce Rock Shire. Has water/toilets and tables. Has taken the place of the Kokerbin Rock site for overnight / weekly stays.

Hi Ivor, Thanks for adding this info on the new camping site.
It sounds like it might be a very popular one as well, there is a lot of talk on the Grey Nomad web site regarding this Camp as well.
That's another one for our next trip noted in the log book.
Any more good spots for free camping found by our W.A. Members ?
Please add them here..............
Cheers kiwijim

I'd be careful of caravan sites they tend to have to price listings 1 for peak and off peak of the holiday season especially through wa the only prescribed camp site you can use usually has a toilet block available for campers though areas that don't have such facilities would be illegal to setup camp in as it wouldn't be classed as a designation area...
a lot of camping areas I have seen you wouldn't get a camping trailors into nevermind a caravan on the site so before you go bush bashing with a caravan in tow you better check the areas regulations on what you can leak into the camp grounds.
if you were going to explore an area I would say brucerock caravan park would likely be the cheapest caravan park to a store a caravan, East of Northam Merredin is a dead option given the cost, very few shires operate their own caravan parks today.
before you go into the state forests of sw WA you might want to check what you can pull in there with prior to setting up camp as some of the tracks into and out of these area are barely wide enough for a car let alone a caravan of any description this is what I have seen camping across sw WA
also note there is very few caravan parks that allow permanent tenancy if you have lay up for a bit due to doctors requirements kenlorn, Mundaring is about the only choice you will have, there is 1 in kielmscott though very hard to get into as there seems to be a long waiting list.
i find that the caravan park in the shire of Bruce Rock is also a permanent tenant option..
otherwise treat most as a 45-90 day lease...

"Hey Guys & Galls" just dropped in to say we are off again on another wander around W.A. This time I am fully prepared for the trip with the addition of WIKICAMPS added to my computer, Now if you people haven't tried this APP,, give it a go, best travel companion since the invention of the push bike for the Swaggie.
This trip will take us up the Great Eastern Highway, as far North as Laverton in the goldfields, we will be heading away in a weeks time and as there is no time limit, we intend to stop at every ( free ) camp site along the way, and with the help of Wikicamps there are hundreds available, this App also tells me where I can get water, where all the dump points are, and anything else of interest along the way.
So, see you all along the way " AH "
