G,Day all, At long long last this bloke is a happy little Vegemite, ;D the trouble with tires for the Thomson has finally been solved, I took the wheels into a local engineering Company (Springfield Engineering of Kenwick) who cut off the old 15in rims and replaced them with nice new 14in x 6in rims, with an off-set of 10mm to allow for the extra wide tire (all done in one day at a cost of $165.00 total) I then cut a 40mm rounded section out of the top of the wheel arch to allow for the wider tire to fit over the brake drum, "Boy" was I happy when the wheel slipped into place like it belonged there. ;D ;D ;D Kiwijim ;D [i mg][/img] this is the spare wheel, can any-one identify it please, center hole is 100mm and stud gap is 90mm [ img][/img] the 40mm cut-out from the wheel arch [i mg][/img] new wheel in place, now looking for some nice new hub caps...

Looking good Kiwiwjim, sorry can't help with the wheel ID, but I am curious, did your van have spats over the wheel arches? Or are you considering them? Cheers, Gristy

G,Day Gristy, No... the Thomson's were never produced with spats, but after looking at the wheel arch I had considered fitting them. I may look Though our back shed at work and see if I can find some that would not look out of place, or maybe I will settle for an ally edge mold which would tidy up the appearance. The guy who did the wheel conversion told me that he thought the rims could be from an early Austin. I am in the process of contacting the local Vintage Car Club at present, here's hoping. Cheers kiwijim. ;D

Hi Kiwijim, The spats on my (1963 -oops that's pre1970s isn't it ) franklin and Viscount are all timber with an ally edge mould, the Viscount is then covered with aluminium cladding, whilst the Franklin is painted to match the colour of the side stripes. If you decide to make some let me know and I will post a close up pic to show what I mean. Good luck with the rest of the resto work. Cheers, gristy

G'Day Gristy, Yes, If you could post some photos of the spats on your vans it would be very helpful, I intend to hunt through our back shed at work as there are parts in there from the early days (20-30 yrs old) from the many vans that the company have wrecked over the years..(ex hire vans from caring customers), I know there are fibre-glass spats there but may-be ally covered wooden ones like you have would be more fitting for the year. thanks kiwijim ;D
