THIS THREAD WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE WANTED SECTIONIt has been moved as it has information that is useful to members Does anyone have or know where to get a window winder mechanism for an early seventies Franklin popup? It is the type with the hexagon bar across the bottom and the winder on the right hand side with the handle coming through the flyscreen. I have most of the mechanism but the winder box and handle is missing and the drive lug on the end of the hex bar is broken. I reckon I can make the drive lug but I need the winder, Has anyone adapted something else to these?

G'day malrv1, Sorry I can't help you directly with your request, but hopefully someone can. From what I understand, the Alfab brand of window was extremely popular in vans during the 1970s and early 1980s. It's possible that other van manufacturers used a similar window to the Franklins, and the handles might be available from other makes of vans. If you are familiar with the Caravans Plus website for buying bits and pieces for vans, they have a couple of parts that are for old Millard louvre windows. This first link shows the hexagon window drive for the old Millard windows... www.caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=36_488&products_id=3555&osCsid=e3b8d3453ce403316c1a01ffbe8c6d4dand this link shows the Millard hatch winder handle which can be adapted to suit the window mechanism as well... www.caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=3388&osCsid=e3b8d3453ce403316c1a01ffbe8c6d4dThere's some other parts on their website for old Viscounts but nothing listed for old Franklins. If nobody comes on here to say they've got something for you, then you might be able to work with the replacement handles available from caravansplus. Sorry I can't help more... cheers, Al.

malrv1, I've been thinking about your question, and I had a look at the windows from the Millard to see if I've got a similar problem as yours... ...And I have I've got a couple that are missing the finger knob on the winder, and some of the winder grub screws are missing. This photo shows the winder on the Millard, which has a D-shaped recess at the back. Is yours the same as this?... Putting my thinking cap on and looking for options and possibilities, these window winder designs are used in old window winder mechanisms in houses, as well as on adjustable work benches. The little finger knobs could be sourced from old saucepan lids, maybe?... Maybe you and I need to set up a foundry and make them up! cheers, Al.

Those handles should not be to hard to turn up on a lathe, if you have access to one.
or maybe a pedestal drill if the material was soft enough, and you have the patience

Greetings malrv1, I have a '74 Franklin (not a pop-top). My window winders do not come thru the flyscreen, so I don't know if this info is any good to you. My winders have a hex bar on the front and rear windows with a box which has a lug on which the winder is pressed!!!!! The winder arms are plastic.
CAMEC (Caravan And Motor-home Equipment Company) has my window winders (new) in stock now, in Sydney. Dec 08.
Cheers Mike ;D ;D ;D

I know this post is 10 years old, but here goes - did you or anyone else manage to fix the lug on the end of the tax bar that goes into the winder box? I have just purchased a Franklin and 5 window widers are all snapped at this point where the tax bar goes into the winder. (Lord knows how anyone managed to break them all) Rest of the van is in great condition, someone has even tinted the Windows! All the parts are there so want to keep it original. I was hoping to just buy new hex bars to fix. No luck so far, so may have to work with what I have. All suggestions welcome. Thanks. Greetings malrv1, I have a '74 Franklin (not a pop-top). Hi Lisa, I think you will find that you can’t find parts because your windows were made by Franklin and parts haven’t been available for years. You will either have to get someone to make them up for you or look on all the caravan parts and sales sites to find some secondhand. ( they do come up secondhand as I remember seeing a collection a few months ago) Cheers hughdeany

Individual parts for the winder boxes aren't available, but whole new boxes are but they are black, not grey. If you're saying the hex bit where the winder is broken off, this is part of the handle, but again, only available in black now.

www.caravansplus.com.au/window-shade-parts/australite-window-parts-c-490.htmlProviding the Square shaft above is not smaller across the flats than your hex points it is only a simple job with a file to turn the Starlite square shaft to hex, only the bit that passes into the Franklin's winder box will need to be filed to a hex. There is a Solder for (see Link Below) Aluminum to be soldered, so one of the broken shafts can be cannibalized d used to lengthen the other shafts, also join bits to each end the square Shaft even if it is slightly different in size just file a half joint to each and join with the solder shafts would be the stronger and easier requiring no special skills and materials. www.bunnings.com.au/tradeflame-aluminium-brazing-and-welding-rods_p5910264 Or buy the bits to install the Starlite winders (about $80) but I think the filing of the square shafts would look better and keep the Franklin a Franklin. I have just had another thought (yes I know it is dangerous) if you still have the broken shaft is to drill and tap one end of a broken shaft and insert a Machine Screw (Hex Head) with the hex of a suitable size to fit the winder and length and use a nut to lock the screw. if the break is mid shaft or you have the broken end again drill and tap both bits of shaft, get a bolt with a long thread, cut thread and screw into one end the the other onto the exposed thread and lock together, also a drop of locktite on threads would improve the job.
