Hi. I am looking at buying an old van to replace my 70s York that has horrendous hail damage or as I call them “character marks”. I looked at a van that I was told was a 77 Vicount but has the shape and the decals of a Hi-lite pop top. It has some water damage that I was told is recent and has been sealed up. There is still moisture in there and I was wondering if these were a wooden frame or aluminium frame. I am a little worried about rotten boards in the future Any information would be great

Hi Haim, If it’s a Hi-lite it’s a wooden frame, and if you can see water marks it means the damage has already been done! Cheers hughdeany

Thanks for the reply The ceiling down one side has bubbled and is delaminated a bit. If this is recent damage in the last two weeks how quickly would the frame be damaged and if I dried it out would it be strong enough or would it need replacing

Might just see about replacing the sheeting on the roof, end and side of the York

Gidday haim
If you can see water damage on the inside and if its starting to de laminate the water has been getting inside between the external wall and internal wall for a lengthy period of time. No telling what damage has been done to the frame.

Thanks bobt I will probably give this van a miss I thought it would take more than a couple of weeks for the amount of bubbling and de laminating that I saw yesterday and I am assuming that if the frame is weak then there might be movement when travelling causing more leaks. My wife doesn’t like the character marks on the little York But it doesn’t leak at all and has an aluminium frame so I will give it a sand where the paint has been cracked and peeled off and respray it.

I have just been told that the van is a Millard hi lift with H6007 on the chassis apparently the rego papers and gas certificate says Millard. So back to the original question, is it an aluminium or timber frame I might be able to post some photos for identification

I was originally told it was a Viscount 77 model when I looked it has “HI-lite” decals front and rear but when I said I wasn’t interested because that brand has a timber frame I have been told the paperwork says it is a Millard Hi lift with the chassis number above

if the outside cladding is pop riveted on then it will have a aluminum frame if it is screwed on then it is a wooden frame.

Hi haim, Sounds like the rego papers are up the spout, happens all the time. If it is a Millard and it’s a pop top it will be a Millard Mini, which were built with wooden then aluminium frames depending on the year.( I don’t think it is a Millard as their chassis numbers started with mm) A picture will tell us what it is exactly,if you can’t do it here send your pics to Don Ricardo for him to upload. Cheers hughdeany

Thanks everyone I will be concentrating on the York I will start a thread on hall of fame and hopefully learn to put up photos. The first question will be what year did they come out with 3 wind out windows, the one twocutekelpies has only has 2 but looks the same otherwise. Cheers

Cheers The triple louvre windows came out the year after mine - 1973-1977. If you're removing wall panels, keep an eye out for your build date, usually written on the back of the plywood around the front window, mine was kitchen side but I have seen it written above and below as well. Is it possible your chassis number is Y6007? That would line up with a 1974 York. Check out this thread for posting photos ditzygypsy.proboards.com/thread/4423/posting-photos-forum-using-flickr

Thanks We have taken out the beds and cupboard around the fridge today and taken out the front ply under the front windows it is pretty rotten on the door side. We will take off the plywood in front of the door next as that is where the main leak was when we got it. We will check for info like you found. Cheers David .
