I think the leaf springs were specific to them from what I remember - what condition are yours in? I replaced the axle in my Arrow when I rebuilt it but the springs were in good condition, so I just cleaned them up and reused them - they are still going fine and the van has done 1000's of KM since and the new owner tows it a long way too.

They are welded on to the u bolts.
Looking at changing it all over to new running gear, being a ground up rebuild i dont want to run old rusty/tired gear and everything else smick......
Trailer is currently at sandblaster and powder coater..... Clean it up niceđź‘Ť

Hi, My Franklin is of the same vintage and a14ft. The springs on my van, use a slipper style mounting at the rear instead of a shackle. I am surprised that you say that they are welded on to the u bolts, I can only think maybe in a emergency a spring centre bolt broke, and that’s what a previous owner had done to get home, and never carried out final repairs.. If you like I can measure the width of the spring leaf on mine tomorrow. Regards, John

We've got a '74 Franklin Regent, on ours the ubolts and locator block were both welded to the axle but not the springs themselves. We also have slipper springs and the rear spring hanger/shackle has the pin welded in which is making it a challenge to get the springs off to clean up.
I can't believe how heavy the chassis is compared to our York of the same size! Even with the drawbar removed, it's very heavy.

Sorry, yes it is the top of the u bolt welded to the axle.
And yes the rear shackle has a welded inn pin.
Its a shame because i can not get replacements without having the hangers cut and re welded and new slipper springs, and that means new axle new u bolts, etc,
So i have decided specially being and old van, to have all new running gear, and new brakes/lines etc redone and get the rig safe for long hauls.

And being a single dropped (hollow) axle they seem to surface rust/rust from not only the outside but the inside, and sure u can clean up the outside of the axle, i cant obviously get to the inside hollow area, and who knows the rust build up in there ..

We're looking at doing the same with ours, replacing all our running gear along with the drawbar and z channels.

you could replace the axle with a slid axle a little heavier but les chance of having a stub axle come off .
