Hi all. I'm wanting to buy portable fridge/freezer 12v for camping in my Franklin. I've got a 130 AH deep cell battery and the interior lights are all LED globes now. I've got a portable solar panel 180w (I think). Looking at approx 45litre unit. Would my battery be up to the job ? I'm abit unsure with the whole solar set up ...

i ran a similar set up on my camper trailer but i have 300w panels 100ah deep cycle battery and that ran led lights laptop for the odd movie and internet a 240v 20cm fan via inverter (1000w) and a primus 50litre fridge freezer on freezer temps but would be almost dead by the time the sun was comming up so it did its job so im thinking you should be fine

Myarrow I'm running a 120AH AGM battery & 120W solar panels. Running the fridge in the car (35l Evakool) it will run indefinitely. Running the caravan (110l upright Waeco and lights etc) the panel is too small and I only get about 2-3 days before having to start the generator. Make sure all wiring is heavy enough. I have trouble in hot weather with voltage drop at fridge startup resulting in the fridge refusing to start due to low voltage. This weekend is tagged to run heavier cable to the Franklin fridge. My thoughts are that you should be OK with that setup. Watch out if buying older 2nd hand fridges, the old "yellowish" Engels are VERY hard on power. Some of the cheaper fridges (I have 1) come fitted with unsatisfactory 12V power cables, spend a couple of $ and make a heavier cable. Planner

Hi I have an 80 litre fridge freezer and found I needed 2 x 120 wAtt solar panels and 2 x 100 amp batteries. I started out with one of each and then added, one battery lasted only 2 days so added extra solar panel to help keep up charge gave me a few more days so added another battery, now go glam ping for 10 or more days and come home with batteries nearly fully charged. This included overcast and raining days. I have piece of mind and can relax. This would probably be overkill for you though. Make sure cables are close to battery or use a heavier wiring as you can loose a lot of amps/ watts with thin wiring. Cheap 12 volt extensions do not cut it, I found out the hard way, and made my own.

Probably opening a HUGE can of worms here, but are the cheap fridge/freezers ok (for minimal use ) ? I see that some are using a Danfos pump in them. I really don't want to fork out massive $ for an Engel, as I will still use the van fridge on gas. We find that our van fridge/freezer is too small so I thought of maybe a 45L portable type.....

I'm running a cheap chinese import, sold and warrantied by EvaKool (sold through BCF & Rays). It runs 24/7 in the back of a ute, under a fibreglass canopy that regularly gets to 55deg in summer. It's more than 3 years old now and going strong. Insulation could be better, especially the lid, but for $299 it was a good buy. One day when it dies or I have some spare cash, I might replace it with an engel. Planner
