Hi. I'm looking for some info from someone who's recently done a new registration of an old van in Victoria.
I know vicroads have a kit to cover the paperwork, but I'd like some info on what they expect with gas and/or electrical inspections, finding an ATM for a classic van, and what you have to do about a VIN when old vans only have chassis numbers. Do you need to get a weighbridge ticket for the Tare in VIC? Also any other tips or traps to keep in mind. I asked on the caravanners forum a few days ago but didn't find what I was looking for.
This is for some friends I want to help who are new to caravanning. If they were in NSW I could walk them through it no problem as I did it myself a few years ago, but for VIC I have no idea.
Thanks in advance.
PS: I thought I joined this group ages ago, but maybe it was the vintage vans

Hi ripper, Firstly you ring Vic Roads and tell them your chassis number,if no number they will give you a vin number and you make an appointment for an inspection. Then you get the vin number stamped on your A frame get the van weighed and take the ticket to your appointment. Make sure all lights and brakes work, and don't forget front white reflectors, they knocked me back because I didn't have them,if they decide all is ok they will issue you a number plate and paperwork and off you go. In my case the van was a 1955 homemade, and because they couldn't find a manufacturers identification anywhere, they went on my say so.So in actual fact you could say anything you want and they wouldn't have known! Hope this helps Cheers hughdeani

Yep, VicRoads is easy for vans. I got pinged on the side orange reflectors. If the van is over 5 meters (including the draw bar) you need an orange reflector on each side - just above the wheel arch. They let me run up to Supercheap and grab some self adhesive ones so I didn't have to come back. Gas and electrical certification - forget it, they are only interested in the lights working.

Has anyone re registered a caravan that is still on the Vic data base? When i got mine from Sale even though i have the last rego sticker & last known plate particulars, it seems that 1885 was too long ago for them to chase details.

Just front up to vicroads. Worse case is they will give you a new VIN number and you will have to get it stamped in (if none is currently on the caravan). having hte previous registration number in theory should make it seemless. Of course, the place is full of assholes so you just never know if your going to come across one of them.
